His very first trip to Ayr was not entirely all that pleasant, at least not in so far as the creatures' hospitality was concerned. Ainsley recalled his encounter with what were apparently called Dactyl, according to a textbook he had just finished going through, and how they had nearly thrown him off of a cliff he had been climbing out of mere desire to adventure and explore. Today, however, as he was a bit older and much more experienced with his axe, he felt a little bit more confident that nothing could get to him. At least, nothing too serious. If he ran into another flock of birds, he'd probably be in for a bit of a fight...

"My luck," he said with a slight huff as he cleared past a few rocks. Luckily he had yet to actually encounter a dragon, but, if given the choice, he was more willing to go up against one giant, solid beast than a couple dozen smaller, harder to hit ones that could swoop in and poke your eyes out before you could take a proper swing at it. As his thoughts settled on this idea, he heard something swoop in from behind him and, just as he turned around, a tail had slowly coiled around his neck and something began to tug him upwards.

It was failing, of course, especially considering he was a nearly full-grown human being who was, as it happened, carrying a fairly large pack plus a heavy axe. So all whatever-it-was was managing to accomplish was choke him half to death. It was persistent though, so while Ainsley grabbed hold of the noose around his neck to try and loosen it with one hand it continued to pull upward to no avail. The bird-snake-thing hissed and Ainsley, who's face was beginning to go blue, had only barely managed to grab a hold of something from off of his belt. Obviously not his axe, but he began to hit the coil around his neck as hard as he could with whatever he was holding. Thankfully, after only a few hits the bird loosened its gripped, screeched and flew up higher. Probably to recover; it didn't seem like it would leave him alone for long.

The blonde was in worse shape however, and as soon as he was free he fell to his knees and coughed and sputtered to catch his breath. In between breaths the teen muttered, "My luck," then grabbed his axe and waited for it to come back down. He was still taking deep breaths to regain the oxygen he'd been lacking, but he was able to stand now. Fiery eyes narrowed upward at his attacker, who was merely circling overhead at the moment, possibly waiting to strike again...

"Get down here you stupid bird!" he called up at it, fiddling with his axe in one hand. Ainsley had begun to go all fidgety where he was standing, waiting for the bird-snake to come back down and make another grab at his neck. Honestly, he was hoping it would so he could cut it in half and be done with the thing. However, it seemed contented to keep circling and recovering, perhaps devising a plan of its own or something to that effect. Whatever the case, the teen had grown bored and a bit impatient with the creature, so after several more taunts and some unnecessary shouting and cursing that Quan would no doubt smack him behind the head for had he been present, Ainsley finally began to continue on with his little adventure. He was a little worse for wear, what with the whole nearly suffocating and all that, but he was able to manage well enough.

The craggy buffs of the range he seemed to be clearing weren't doing much to ensure him that he would survive that day, not to mention nighttime seemed to be coming that much quicker and he was still a way's away from the town he and Quan agreed to meet in once the latter's business dealing were done, so the teen tried to move faster. The bird-snake was all but gone from his mind when he felt a familiar creeping feeling and, at the very last second, he ducked just in time to dodge another oncoming attack from the bird-snake. When he recovered, a smirk played on his lips as he readied his battle axe.

"Knew you'd be back for me," he said playfully, then began to plan a battle tactic to get rid of the damned thing. It screeched and came at him again, and once again Ainsley was able to dodge it - just barely though, as it was a bit faster than he originally thought. This happened quite a few times while he continued to assess the creature; he kept on dodge and it kept on coming for him. It was very persistent, he noted with a bit of curiosity, but he needed to get on with his little trip. So, with it's next attack Ainsley ducked down at hacked upwards with his axe, feeling a bit of resistance as it carved into the bird's wings, sending the creature into the ground moments later. A serious expression settled on his face as he walked up next to it and, after taking a deep breath, Ainsley put it out of its misery. He didn't really feel the need to let it suffer anyhow, so he kept the encounter rather short and brief.

The teen took a second to rest afterward and cleaned up his axe, then went on his back towards the town. The sun was actually about to set already, but he was still quite probably hours away from his destination.

...Perfect.
