“I have a plan.” Kilian huffed out as he swerved in and out of the craggy areas between the rocks. His breath was much too labored to talk so he opted for their bond. Look, Amadia. There are so many ledges to hide upon above us. His face flicked upwards, looking at the various outcroppings of rocks that hide the sky from their view.
If we can distract the dragon long enough, I’ll be able to climb up there and attack from above. His face fell back down to the path in front of him. It was a lot to ask of his companion. She’d be putting her life at risk for a plan that might not even work. If they wanted to have even a slim chance at making it out of this alive and unharmed, they had to at least try.
Amadia understood. So much more than Klian realized. She knew it was hard for him to even bring it up, so she did it for him. I can act as bait. Pretend I am injured and hopefully distract the dragon long enough for you to land a killing blow. Amadia snorted. I’m all for it! With their plan out in the open, Kilian trusted Amadia to do her part. He knew she’d not let him down.
Kilian changed directions at the last moment. At the same time, Amdia stopped running completely and rolled around in the dirt and rocks, making herself look more banged up than she really was. She lay still, making her breath seemed labored. After the running they had done, though, it didn’t take much acting on this part. Now to just wait for the dragon.
It didn’t take long. The rampaging dragon was soon upon them. It stopped a few yards from where Amadia laid, breathing hard and whimpering as if she were injured. The plan worked, though the dragon was angry it still held on to a bit of itself to realize that it needed to be cautious. That delay was what Kilian needed.
Having made it up to the ledges, Kilian crawled over to the very end. Seeing the dragon below, he looked over at Amadia. Thank you, my friend. He whispered in his mind. With that thought, he pulled his daggers back out and lept from the edge. He landed on the dragon’s back, his left blade slicing into the flesh of the dragon’s neck and going straight through. With his other dagger, he bent down and brought it across the Ayrala’s neck, slicing into the flesh from the front of the neck.
He pushed himself off of the beast’s back and landed on the ground next to Amadia. He reached out and patted the Keindred’s head as he watched the dragon fade into dust. He picked the dragon orb up and stashed it in his pack. “We did it.” The smile on Kilian’s face held pure joy at having defeated the Ayrala.
