Jerry wasn't sure whether to count Valentine's disaster or not, but it had been ages since the last thing he would constitute as a date. He was emotionally prepared this time. It would be a fun outing, enjoyed by both parties, and maybe it would lead to another one, and maybe it would lead to more, or maybe it wouldn't, but it was the journey that mattered, yadda yadda. He had packed a picnic basket. The basket was, in fact, a cardboard box he had gotten from behind the kitchens, but at least he had taken the time to cut the box flaps to make a sort of basket-like handle, and folded a clean bed sheet on top of the goodies of the evening. Wine was debated for quite some time. He knew where he could barter for it, although beer or liquor was probably easier to procure, but the gesture of it would be romantic but no. No, he had said no alcohol. He could have good wholesome fun and still feel good without intoxicants. He could do this. He could function without something to depend on. He packed his guitar. Text from Jerry Meet me at the path to the jungle?

Gnat had spent about an hour doing her hair, picking something to wear that said "approachable" without also screaming "REMEMBER THAT TIME WE TOTALLY TONGUE PUNCHED EACH OTHER'S VOCAL CHORDS AT THAT ONE PARTY? YEAH, THAT WAS A THING THAT HAPPENED." Okay, so she probably didn't own anything that said that. She was in the middle of trying to unstick her mascara wand when she got the text. Path to the jungle? Well, s**t. She showed up a few minutes later in shorts and extremely sophisticated formalwear, her hair tied back in customary pigtails. So much for an up-do. She reeked faintly of OFF bug spray. Gnat was prepared. For, well. Gnats. "Jungle fever," she muttered to herself.

Jerry filled much of his waiting time pondering what 'brt' could stand for.
When she finally showed, he glanced up from the text, "Hey!" Jerry beamed at the sight of her. His own dress was apparently hidden under the gray, deus-issued, janitor-like jumpsuit. "I like your top! I hope you don't mind a little walk, I found this place when doing a patrol once!"

"Thanks," she replied. "I like your, uh. Hair." She gestured sort of awkwardly.
"Walkin's fine. As long as there ain't any, like, lions n' tigers n' bears." Gnat glanced at the trees.

"Nothing we can't handle, I'm sure!" He beamed, "Don't worry, I'm prepared." he gave her a wink, patting his cardboard picnic basket before strutting forth down the trail.
"How are you adjusting to life here? Go on any life threatening missions yet?"

"If you say so," she replied dubiously. At least ONE of them had a bazooka. Right?
"Well. One time Tuck woke me up at four thirty in th' mornin." That was pretty life threatening, right? "An' I had to peel potatoes. Peelin' potatoes is hard."
Gnat swatted irritably at a bug. "Other than that - no. What's th' last mission you was on?"

Jerry laughed at the peeling of potatoes, before pondering. The missions all sort of... blurred together after a while. He had missed the last last-minute-call to the field due to a broken arm, The last real serious mission he could remember... "Well, there was that Yeti infestation up North I helped Rep out with... and I um. Had to stab my friend in the one before that." The sandy path was slowly becoming thinner, becoming more of a dirt path as he lead the way. "To save him," He added quickly. "He was infected in the brain by um. Some artifact."

"Yikes. Sounds like somethin' out of like, a movie."
Or Teen Wolf.
"What's a yeti like? They smell? Bet it was real cold. They're like, snowy Bigfoots, right?" Gnat followed after him, trying to follow his footsteps as closely as possible.
"Kinna cool, though. You shoulda made a rug." Yeti-skin rug, totally bad a**.

"I think Rep did, ahahaha. You know, I was a Yeti once! I think I ate a bear." He mused as they continued on. He was off the path, as far as she could tell, now, knocking brush away with his cardboard picnic basket. Judging by the incline, they were heading up a hill. "You... get used to er... oddness here. It all kind of..." He wove a hand as though trying to grasp the words for how to describe it. "I think we're all a little crazy in our line of work."

Gnat nearly stopped in her tracks.
"Wait, you turned inta one?"
She fell silent, trying to digest this information.
"So, you're like...a were-yeti?"
She paused again.
"Are we... That is, like." She finally pointed at the box. "Are we gonna eat a bear?" Gnat considered this possibility.
"Cool."

Jerry laughed outright, picking up a stick to use as a machete to clear some of the brush that blocked their way, "Oh, no no no! It was a golem, I was ah... helping Miss Aria- she's the Mist leader- haze some newbies. Um- Golems are like... I don't know, mud robots. And I don't think we'll find any bears in the woods here."

"'Kay."
Mud robots. She bet Tuck would like that. He had such an - affinity - for mud. She grabbed her own stick, and started helping clear a path, remaining silent for a few moments as she worked.
Gnat finally spoke up again. "You go hikin' alot around here? Seems..." she paused, listening.
"Kinna lonely."
She supposed she should be worried about possibly being lost in the woods with some kind of psycho serial killer, but really, the guy seemed pretty harmless.
Well, besides his penchant for blowing holes in ceilings.

"I grew up in the city," He paused, expression contorting for a moment before he gave a mighty sneeze, "But enough benadryl in me, it's all really pretty. Even with the fog. It's just a bit up this way, keep heading uphill! But anyway um. Yeah, there was this big park by our neighborhood, I used to go there a lot to just think, you know? I like getting patrol duty. If you're lucky, there's a moving target to shoot at and not just a practice dummy."

"If yer lucky, huh? What kinna, er, moving targets is out here?" Gnat glanced around suspiciously. She had heard about monsters made from shadow, but hadn't personally encountered any here - yet. It would be nice to finally get some payback against the things that went bump in the night.
"How long've you been here anyway?" she added, gesturing with her stick. "I mean. Like. The island, yennow?"
She missed home. A park sounded real nice right about now. Some homework, maybe, or a ball game - but Tuck wasn't back home; he was here.
And that made it a kind of home, too.

"Mostly er... shadowlings of various sorts, but they're everywhere. Sometimes the Fear just leaks out into the jungle though, so you have to be careful... oh, um. A couple years," Jerry replied, and with a few more thwacking blows of the stick, the leaves parted to reveal a cliffside, covered in moss and flowers overlooking where the river came crashing down from the higher mountains. "TaDaaa!" He beamed, setting down his cardboard basket to start unzipping his jumpsuit.
