Destiny had managed to make her away through yet another book that week and walked the mile or so to this little book store she adored. It was quiet and had the smell of books she enjoyed so much. She was constantly in need of new books to read because she read fast and devoured books she enjoyed.

She stepped inside and looked around a while, gathering a few choice options that she meant to purchase. Her lover would understand. The bar did well enough that the bills were getting paid plus some. This wasn't such a big deal in the grand scheme.

"Hey, Zac!"

She'd seen him in there a few times and spied him as he walked in the door. A pleased smile graced her lips. Though he was younger than she by a goodly amount she always got the feeling he was older than he looked. She enjoyed talking to him, the few times they'd managed conversation.

"Fancy seeing you here!"

He looked maybe a little drawn thin, but that was normal lately for him. Lots of classes, burning the midnight oil was the excuse if anyone asked. Add to it that recently he’d been moving to a new place and maybe he had a good reason for it. It never did change the fact he watched people like he’d left the teenage years behind long ago.

“Hello Mrs Destiny!” He raised a hand in greeting “Have you found anything new and good?” He tipped his head to one side, legitimately curious if she’d found anything worth a read, casual fiction or not. They didn’t talk often but she made interesting choices. He ran his fingers over a few music theory books, picking one of them before adding a ‘who’s who’ book on destiny city to his pile, and moved to another area, adding a few more books and wincing at how thick a few of them were.

“I hear we might get a storm tonight.” He rested a small pile on the counter and turned back to find a few more; a book on basic French was tucked into his arm.

He chewed his lower lip and considered the stacks again, tucking his list into his pocket.

“Though I heard there was a carnival in town, are you going?”

Destiny's arms were full of books, some older looking and some modern paperbacks. All of them were fiction and no few of them looked like they had promise...at least so far as she was concerned. So long as the story sounded pleasing or the author was good she was set to go...really. She set her own selections on the counter in a pile and tried to keep the stack mostly upright.

She found she liked the boy...a lot. He was sweet and quiet and had eyes that did not look like he was nearly a decade younger than she was.

"A little storm never hurt anyone."

In fact, Destiny seemed to only feel really alive when the thunder rumbled and the rain was falling steady. She used to love hearing it on the roof and now that she and her lover lived in a basement apartment it was impossible to hear that sound. It was a habit of hers to ascend the stairs into the bar on rainy nights and sip at a glass of wine while listening to the drops assail her roof. On those nights she slept really well.

The Carnival she wasn't planning on going to. Her partner hadn't expressed and interest and they had a bar to run. Maybe...

"I don't know. Depends on what the partner has to say. We've got a business, you know?"

Not many knew "partner" equated to lover as well.

“Depends on if you are one of the percentage of people who gets struck by lightning.” He quipped, a grin taking the edge off the rather dark humor of it.
Partner, the word tripped its own thoughts with Zac, if only because he too had a ‘partner’, a companion, hesitate to say lover because if nothing else it implied an emotion that if it existed between him and the General, neither had ever come out and said it.

They were comfortable; well worn into each other’s ways and that was fine.

He nodded in understanding of the need to run a business. “I can understand that.” He nodded.

“Mm… Do you have anything you’d recommend? Just…something different to read?” He turned back towards her and added the couple more books he’d gathered to the pile. It seemed a week of ‘indulging’, more often than not he’d buy one or two but this time he seemed a ‘kid in the candy store’.

"Mountains, Zac. I have mountains for you to read. You should come by the apartment and I'll lend you some of my favorites."

She pulled out her Kindle Fire and opened the browser up, letting him see the titles the carried, most of which were reflected in her real collection at the house. Graciously she handed the device to him and left to go browse the shelves for a title or two that she could think of off the top of her head as being very entertaining or even life-changing in the case of at least once or two series. In the end she came back with two books: the start of one series and something else completely different, and offered them to the boy.

"Those should be useful and interesting to you. That series there," she indicated the book, "was enough to make me almost consider hopping the fence just to see. But it's got a brilliant plot."

But that was a silly thought. She'd liked girls her entire life through. Never ever saw a man she wanted in any way that was remotely romantic. Now it was sort of a joke. She figured if it hadn't happened by now it probably wasn't going to. Anyway, the book depicted love as love no matter the gender or orientation. Many facets were represented so she'd enjoyed it all.

Still, with his request fulfilled she had a bunch of books to pay for and a shift to prep for in her bar.

He looked them over and then nodded, after all he’d read those horrible ‘romances’ that Ever had foisted on him shortly after they first met, little could be worse than –those.

“Alright, consider them added to my pile.” He nodded and then paused to fish one more book off the shelf and headed to pay, that last book he had gift wrapped though. His purchase resulted in no less than three bags, and one gift-wrapped with a ribbon.

He remembered two of the bags and the ‘gift’ at least.

He handed her the latter, dark red paper with a gold ribbon, directly to her.

“Enjoy.” He said with a small nod. Inside was a curious book called ‘Sophie’s World’. – Which described itself as a book on the history of Philosophy, though if you opened to the first pages it seemed more a story than a history.

An alarm sounded in his pocket and he fumbled out a phone, arched eyebrows at the notification he found and gave a small curse.

“Later!” He said with a wave.

She moved up to be rung up and pay and smiled. There was nothing unusual about any of this. Indeed, it was a bright spot in her day. Destiny had no reason to be unhappy and gave a look of surprise when he dropped the gift wrapped book into her hands. She hadn't even seen him grab it, cheeky young man! She marveled at the bag before opening it.

When the cashier asked for her card she handed it to him, glancing over the back of the book to see what new sort of treasure she had.

A minute had passed, maybe, when she noticed his bag left behind.

"Oh, dear, Zac!"

The employee had her credit card and her books so she took the bag and dashed out to the parking lot hoping to catch him.

What she saw as she ran out the door was Zac at first…but a moment later.

Well, a moment later it changed, Zac never worse such a strange coat with trailing chains. He looked, older perhaps with half his face now covered by the dark mask. He turned at the sound of your call and the bright eyes, which you could clearly read as Zac’s own, having seen him undergo the strange transformation widened in shock and dismay.

“I can’t begin to explain how…very bad it is that you chose that moment to be chivalrous.”

He sounded genuinely regretful in that moment.

If she hadn't just seen it with her own two eyes Destiny would have never believed it. In fact she still didn't, or didn't want to, watching him standing in front of her in a way she could not have fathomed before on how he could look. In her eyes and limited experience he'd always been a young man, just barely out of his teens. A little quiet a lad, perhaps, but nothing like this. It was like she'd just seen Clark Kent take off his glasses to become Superman.

"I..." she backed up a step. "You..."

Her entire evening had shifted. The last dying rays of the sun were sinking behind the hills and the buildings of downtown no longer had the benefit of the light. The sky was darkening from brilliant hues of magenta and gold to softer inked strokes of indigo and navy. She shivered though it wasn't cold and didn't know what to say. She had no idea what she'd just seen! No matter how much regret lay in his tone she was almost certain nothing good was about to happen.

"Your books..." she returned in a forlorn tone of her own.

He nodded, “Thank you, I appreciate you bringing them out to me.”

He lifted a hand reaching for them and took a careful step forward. He held nothing that might be construed as a weapon; though the videos strewing the Internet often showed the White clad terrorists in the city creative strange effects from what seemed like thin air.

At least, he wasn’t wearing white. There really wasn’t anything white on him when you came down to it, most of it was shadowy tones and curls with a brilliant red crystal hung from his waist.

“Well, now you know there are more than just the ‘senshi’ running about the city, though that’s hardly how I wanted someone to find out, and normally I’d never have done that where I considered I might be seen.”

One hand slipped around the handle of the book bag, tugging it to join the others, which now were hooked over one hand rather than divided between two.

Once he had it, he set the bags down on the pavement.

“Fortunately, it’s just us, so what might have been an offer, will just have to become an assumption on the choice you’d prefer if you weren’t quite so…shocked.”

He spoke gently, and raised another hand like he might touch her face, or shoulder – but instead it slipped into her chest.

A choice? What choice? What the heck just happened?

She knew something of the terrorists in the city but so long as they didn't come to her bar and she wasn't harassed by anyone she was fine with it. Every city had its drawbacks, right? Well, she was pretty happy in this one despite the prancing around of a bunch of girls in short skirts. Eye candy in her books, when she could see them.

She had no idea what this had to do with him, or choices.

He plunged his hand into her chest and she gasped, wide eyed and helpless. Destiny had no idea what he was doing but it hurt and she was frozen in place, helpless to help herself or stop him. Whatever it was felt like she was on fire and frozen cold at once, like ice was up her spine. It flushed like a fever from the root of her body to the tips of it, making her vision blur as she whimpered.

Her hands rose up to where his was and gripped his forearm, but she didn't try to push it away.

"Zac..." There were tears in her eyes. "What have you done?"

He drew himself up, stature given by good posture and something of a confidence he didn’t carry with him as much when he wasn’t in uniform.

“Saved your life.” He replied quietly, succinctly. “It’s not safe for me to be seen doing that, and its not safe for you to see it, not as a civilian.”

He removed his hand and curled the fingers slightly, only just resisting the urge to shake it out, to shake off the ‘intimacy’ of the touch.

“If the senshi knew that you had seen who I was… they haven’t balked at the idea of torture before.”

He glanced her over and then nodded. “Lieutenant Opal.” He said after a moment. “In uniform, I am General-King Zinkenite, and there are a great many people who would, I am sure, like to take my head.”

"Lieutenant Opal?"

She looked down at herself, powered up for the first time in something she thought was fashionable, all things considered, but was not what she'd been wearing a second ago. It was far from the strangest turn in the night so she kind of let it roll off her back without saying too much about it. She just examined herself, holding up the little bronze lock on the rope like it was something foreign.

"General King?"

Come to mention it she did feel power, extraordinary power, coming off the boy in waves. It felt immense, overpowering to her newly claimed senses. It was strong and a bit enticing and she knew she wanted to feel that way for herself. Whatever it was about him that gave him, and now her, a chance at feeling that way she liked it. Or could come to like it in time.

"Torture?"

She'd never read any news reports about that, had she? Only about weird events in the city that no one really explained and seemed to have no purpose. She glanced up at him with a quizzical expression.

"What have you gotten me into?"

“Hopefully something you can survive now.” He replied and glanced away for a moment.

“Lieutenant, Captain, General, General-King or General Queen, those our –our- ranks, the senshi, the ones called ‘terrorist’ by the news, have their own. There was a time that they captured many of our ranks, and tortured them, some were killed…gruesomely, and others have never quite been the same, mentally if not physically. Hardly something we could let be reported.

I think most of us with –any- wits can understand we don’t need attention called to us. We are, global, well Vigilante’s if you were. While we have a darker history we’ve found ways around it, that still allows us to guard this earth from the Senshi, who, each and every one has a ‘home world’ that you can easily guess is NOT earth.”

He crouched and picked up his bags again and slid them over one arm before offering her the other. He didn’t need to, but it was polite to do so.

“Come, let me show you our strong hold, you won’t be able to reach it until you are stronger, but there is a great deal of history to this world that no history book will tell you.”
