About: Mei, born Mei Hua Li to a very wealthy, elite Beijing family, was fortunate by every definition. Her father, an influential CEO of a company his own father had built, was quite content with his three sons, all of whom were destined to excel in their various fields. Mei lived a carefree life as her mother's favorite, almost like a pet. She was, afterall, the daughter Mrs. Li had always wanted. She lived to make her mother happy. She was softspoken and polite, a charming little doll when needed. She wore elaborate, uncomfortable dresses and practiced the piano until her fingers ached, just so she could fill the family house with the music her mother loved. She attended an elite private school from preschool through high school, and within the dozen or so children from her class, she excelled in every respect. She was, in her firm belief, the most intelligent, the most beautiful, the most skilled in English and at the piano. Of course, she was born with a desperate desire to please, and, mixed with a conditioned competitiveness with her esteemed brothers, she tried very hard. Compared to her lazy, spoiled classmates, she was the best, because she studied and practiced. By the time she reached college, she had confidence in herself and her talents, but not for long. She attended, almost miraculously, Renmin University of China, one of the top Beijing universities, though this probably had more to do with her family and her father's success than her own personal merit. She expected to excel, but instead found herself surrounded by people who truly deserved to be there -- the cream of the crop if you will. Her shallow confidence shattered as she realized how truly mediocre and plain she was.
Her insecurities led her to Jun, a waitress at a nearby restaurant. She was strong, indepedent, and loved by everyone. Mei fell hopelessly in love with her, and even though she doubted 24-year-old Jun would ever want an 18 year old, the two dated, keeping their relationship a secret.
However, when Mei was 19, Jun broke up with her. It was sudden and without clear reason. Mei had already been struggling with her schoolwork, and this emotional blow pushed her beyond repair. She dropped out of college. Afraid of her mother's disappointment and her father's anger, she ran away, using her savings and allowance to move to Nirvani, the most remote, distanced place she could think of. She decided to go by Mei Hwa, rather than Mei Hua, in hopes that it would make her harder to find. It was her first time being completely independent and having a job, and yet she managed to find a good place for herself, despite some personal issues she had to overcome. She's allergic to most animals, and is illiterate when it comes to technology (even the internet confuses her), resulting in a number of disagreements with the clinic computers.
Her first few years in Nirvani were interesting, to say the least. A lack of friends and a sadistic boss resulted in a bit of... mental collapse, to put it delicately. Her closest companions were a pet cactus and a teenage girl who thought she was a cat, and at work, she spent much of her time in the cupboards behind her desk. Her craziness hit a peak at the end of year 6, when she found a letter from her parents in her mailbox. Despite her name change, they had found her almost immediately, and were inviting her to New Year's. She spent the beginning of year 7 in Beijing, surrounded by smug, mocking ex-classmates and an obviously still-furious father. One passive-aggressive comment from him during a party resulted in a small breakdown on Mei's part, and an intense desire to give her father a grandson. And so she tracked down a college friend she had always admired, and after a few awkward conversation and a flight to the States, she was pregnant.
Her daughter Yue was born at the end of year 7, and although she was through the roof, the nagging impulse from before returned shortly, and soon enough, she found herself in the same situation. This time she had a pair of twins, Jian and Chun Fei, and thankfully, she now had a son to boast about. And so she took her three children and took them back to Nirvani, where she settled into a peaceful, significantly more sane lifestyle. It certainly wasn't easy raising three children all alone, without anyone to rely on, but she made do to the best of her abilities. Now that her babies are teens, they don't need her as much as they used to, and that's been hard, but a few hours in a cupboard is usually enough to calm her down again.
Her greatest achievement in forty-five years? She finally learned how to use a word processor.

About: Yue is the eldest child of Mei, conceived through artificial insemination after a particularly intense psychotic breakdown. As the oldest, she has had to deal with her mother's craziness for two years longer than her siblings, and she's grown to be a very mature and pragmatic girl, even at a young age. She was practically raised in the clinic, and for a while there she aspired to be a doctor as well, but recently her interest has shifted towards law. She is easily exasperated by her mother's behavior and lack of a backbone, and is often quick to chastise her, though she does care for and admire Mei a lot. Even though she's not that much older than her siblings, she doesn't feel that close to them, and usually lets them do their own thing. Throughout her life she has had trouble getting along with the other children her age, because of her intensely serious nature and general disdain for childlike wonder, so she has always preferred to spend much of her time on her own, something her mother has greatly misunderstood. (She cleared out one of the kitchen cupboards and put in a book light and a pillow, in case Yue wanted to be alone.)
Yue has always harbored a strong admiration for strong, independent women, especially ones in fields dominated by men. Her first childhood crushes were on the powerful women she encountered in her day-to-day life, and it was directly responsible for her obtaining her first girlfriend. Yue never really liked Mimi Murrow, but she was the daughter of the sheriff, and she was desperate to get to know Romane. The relationship, obviously, didn't last very long, not even two full seasons, and even though it's been about a year since they broke up, it's become the source of deep, humiliating shame for Yue, and a real wake up call in terms of her behavior.
Finally, however, Yue is about to step out into the world, and it felt like an eternity in the making. She currently attends university in the UK and will return home during the summer and winter seasons.

About: Jian is the older of Mei's twins, the son she so desperately wanted. Because of this, he was spoiled from a young age, getting whatever he wanted when he wanted it. This is much to Yue's frustration, especially when he gets away with things she wouldn't be able to. Although he, like all of Mei's children, seemed to be a mild-mannered, introverted child, he was a bit of a troublemaker and had a bad habit of wandering off or getting wrapped up in his daydreams. His earlier interests leaned towards the bizarre, as he showed a particular obsession with the occult, magic, and monsters. He wasn't afraid of things most kids his age would be, and actually would love to see a real ghost, zombie, or a demon. For the most part, he's well-behaved, but if he thinks there's an opportunity to make his dream come true, all of that is gone. As he's grown older he has matured, learning to control some of his delusions. Although he still has an appreciation for Chinese culture, lately his interests have been focused more on D&D dragons, rather than Chinese dragons. Puberty has not been an enjoyable experience for him, and he's chosen to withdraw into his fantasy novels, rather than go out and make the most of life.
He's incredibly close to his twin sister, Chun Fei, and is very protective of her, though as they've grown up he's become more independent. His relationship with his other sister and his mother leaves much to be desired, as well.
He was held back a year in school, but it hasn't affected his life much at all.

About: Chun Fei is the youngest Li, a "bonus" to her brother, at least in her mother's eyes. Don't get me wrong, just because Mei hadn't intended to have twins when she tried for round two doesn't mean she loves Chun Fei any less -- in fact, she may just love her more. While Yue is trusted and Jian can get away with murder, Chun Fei is babied. As a child, she was sweet and shy, uncomfortable around most adults and many of her classmates, and was known to cling to Jian at every moment possible. When he wasn't there, she clung to Mei. Actually, the truth is, by the second grade she had already begun to grow out of her shyness, but continued the act because she realized it was a convenient tool. People trusted her more quickly, let her get away with so much more! Yes, even at seven years old, Chun Fei had a manipulative side, and wasn't afraid to use her weakness as a weapon to get what she wanted, even then. As she grows older, this manipulative side has only grown stronger. The demure act can only last so long, and the now-teenage Chun Fei, or "Faye" as she insists people call her, is learning exactly how much leeway cute girls can get. Everyone around her, except for maybe Yue, is perfectly unaware, just how she likes it. She can always sabotage Yue later.
Now that she and her brother are getting older and Jian is showing less interest in playing protector, she's felt a little bitter. She'll have to find other people to cling now, afterall.
