WHO: Doucette, Revontulet, Vivi, Shepard, Cesc
WHEN: Later than people should be visiting: after pajamas have been put on but before true sleep has stolen most people away
      WHERE: Vermillion Bakery
WHEATHER: Warm spring night - the moon is full and shining bright

The new frei drifted behind the woman, the other’s hurried pace not a bother to one who exerted very little energy to simply glide forward a bit faster than usual. The way her wings dipped and curved into a flare in an almost imperceptible flutter caught the wind effectively and helped to keep her thin frame moving at a decent speed. Although they had not seemed to be in any hurry to leave the lab just a moment ago, the moment they’d entered into the sweet air of the still spring night the woman (Doucette, she said her name was Doucette) had looked excited. “We have to see Vivi,” she had breathed. Without a watch on her wrist she’d not had an idea if it was too late for such an adventure, but it was likely to not have mattered at all. Surely as long as it wasn’t the early hours of the morning her dear friend would forgive her such an intrusion.

Although Revontulet had not spoken a word throughout the exchange with Zeke and Anya she’d smiled at the others warmly enough and she clearly understood. Now, whenever Doe looked back over her shoulder at the aurora frei to check on her, as she seemed unwilling to float beside her exactly, but instead a bit to the side and behind, she’d offer another smile. Instead of looking around her as the two of them moved on towards their destination she looked up, absorbed in the moon in the sky and the stars that twinkled around it. They winked at her and seemed to play their own games with each other as the large orb watched over them. The scene was comforting to her. And something more.

With each passing moment that she watched the moon and the stars she felt a strange feeling growing within her. It wasn’t a bad feeling however, so she did not alert Doucette to the change. It felt almost like her rune was growing and when she looked down she found that the little icon inside her ribbon was glowing brighter than it had been before. Revontulet shrugged to herself and looked up in time to see Doucette round a corner beside a building that smelled faintly of something sweet. Everything was dark in this area though and the frei couldn’t figure out why the red head was suddenly stopping and knocking on a door before her.

Ooooh, I hope someone is still awake.” Doe fretted suddenly, the darkness of the building causing her to realise just how late she’d managed to make their appearance but unwilling to back out now. They had come all the way and she could never forgive herself if Vivi was not the first to meet Revontulet. She and Vivi had been through so much, shared so much. Surely if she was to go to anyone at any time of the night, it was to be the French woman. “Revontulet, come on over, don’t worry.

Doucette turned to Ren to beckon her frei to come closer, worried that the darkness had scared the girl. A slight gasp escaped her lips when she saw her however. The newborn was almost ghostly floating there, her pale skin lit by a blue-green light which came from...where? It was not hard to see that Revontulet’s rune glowed brightly in the dark space, but it was not the source that made her eyes light up like blue fireflies. The culprit was the hair that tumbled over her shoulders and curled ever so slightly at the tips. “Revontulet...are you doing that on purpose?” Doe whispered, taking a step towards her frei just as the door opened behind her.

Knock, knock!

Cesc looked up from his book as he heard the sound, his eyebrows lifting and his ears perking in surprise. It was late and the household had all split up for the evening, and he lay in his bed reading one last chapter before getting ready to switch off the lights. For a moment, he thought he'd misheard -- maybe someone shutting their door? -- but the sound seemed too clear to be mistaken. He set down the book on his night table and opened his bedroom door.

Shepard was in the bathroom, gargling, shirtless and in pajama bottoms. He turned slightly as he noticed Rhede approaching.

"Shepard?" Rhede ventured, floating up.

Shepard leaned forward and spat, then grabbed a towel to pat his face. His response was muffled. "Mm?"

"Did you hear a knock at the door?"

Shepard hung the towel back on its peg, shaking his head. "Was there a knock?" He leaned over to the small staircase that lead up to the building's third floor. "Oi, Vivi! We expecting anyone tonight?"

A dark head appeared at the top of the stairs, clothed in a satin red nightdress. "Mais non -- but I thought it was that I heard something! Is all well, do you think?"

"Hold up, I'll get it!" Shepard replied, righting himself and darting briefly into his room for a t-shirt. He held it in one hand as he and Cesc went down the stairs, the frei behind the human, Shepard's footsteps loud on the wood. Vivi descended only as far as the second floor, tying a kimono-style robe around her waist, busily tying her hair back into a ponytail as she watched. The stag's face was clear and curious, and Shepard impatient enough to only pull his arms through the shirt before pulling open the door. "Hullo?"

Shepard stopped putting his shirt on mid-pull. Cesc, hovering beside him, poked forward in curiousity, and then both their faces took on the same expression of surprise.

For Shepard, the look was followed by immediate understanding. Doucette -- long lost Doe, wherever she had been -- had finally come to visit them, and had finally gotten her frei. He grinned and pulled the shirt over his head quickly, exclaiming: "Doucette!"

For Cesc, everything was wholly unknown. This little redhead with the energetic curls and the beautiful skin, she was looking with wonder at a slim, delicate frei who glowed a crisp white and blue in the darkness, like a spirit released into air. He broke into a smile, his own amber eyes glowing faintly, but said nothing, looking back at Shepard to make introductions.

Doucette knew people were approaching before the door opened, but her back was still slightly towards them when they revealed her. Torn between facing them and caring further for her frei, Doe faltered in her greeting for a moment before smiling at Shepard and lifting a hand about as high as her shoulder in an awkward wave.“Shepard. I’m so sorry if I woke you. I didn’t realise it was so late. I should have called but...you know how technology and I mix.

So distracted was the red head with turning away mid-sentence that she’d neither had the time to blush at her usual awkwardness around the man or notice the very bright, very pink thing that was standing next to him. Indeed, she’d not even noticed that he wasn’t standing.

A little flick of her wings had brought Revontulet next to Doucette while she spoke, drawn in by the addition of more people and new sounds to absorb. The new man said Doucette in a very different way than the bright man had, but she liked his colours and thus liked him better. A smile grew on coral lips in his direction before turning to look at the pink one while Doucette fussed at her. Of course she hadn’t the slightest idea that she was glowing, or what would have caused it. Instead, the aurora simply shifted pale, translucent wings whenever Doe tried to get somewhere closer to inspect the ombre of her hair.

Reaching a hand up, Revon moved her fingers to the deer’s cheek, as slow and delicate as she’d done to Doucette earlier that evening.

Err...is Vivi home?” Doucette finally managed, moving back around Revon once she’d decided whatever made her light up like a blue-green glowstick wasn’t harming the frei in anyway. The essence was aurora after all. Perhaps there was something to that.

Finally, as if Cesc had just arrived, the redhead’s gaze grew confused for a moment, taking in the pink and the yellow and the horns. Dawn and stag. A look of hurt flashed across those freckled features but she managed a smile all the same, though her eyes didn't quite meet his, didn't quite settle anywhere personal or uncomfortable. “Actually, I think it may be too late to be bothering you and all that. We should be going. Another time, yes?” Doucette reached for Ren’s free hand to pull her away.
PostPosted: Sat May 18, 2013 10:29 am

Rhedefre barely had the time to register what Doucette was saying when the aurora frei approached him, and he floated closer, into her reaching touch. Her fingers were chilled, and her fingertips were gentle, and she touched him with the same naked curiousity that he could just barely, barely remember having once had. Everything about her was fresh and new, and she gave out no sense of loss or pain for him to hear. And she was terribly, effervescently beautiful, similar in some ways to lovely Zurine.

"Hello," said the dawn stag quietly, in his warm, low, accented voice. He lifted a gentle hand but only hovered, not touching or impeding her from continuing to prod him.

"Hey hey hey hey hey --" Shepard broke in as Doucette tried to turn away, his faint grin still lingering on his face as he pulled the rest of his shirt down. He had caught that brief look of hurt that flitted over her face, but could not even begin to understand it. He knew that Vivi had called and left messages more than once after their awkward encounter at the mall, but they both decided that maybe delicate, sweet-natured Doucette had needed time to let the blush fade from her features, so to speak.

But then weeks had turned into months, and they both wondered...

And now she was here again, and there wasn't a chance Shepard was going to let her dart off into nowhereland again. "Don't y'dare run off after wakin' us all up after a year of nothin'. You come back here an' make introductions."

There was a quiet, swift sound from inside the bakery, and then Vivi's figure appeared at the doorway, ducking under Shepard's arm, her lips split into a smile, her pale face shining in the dim light.

"J'en étais sûre! Doucette? Doucette! I knew that it was!" she said, flying out from the bakery and enveloping the redhead in a hug. "My darling -- oh! -- but what is this? You have been gone far too long, but I see you brought someone lovely along with you!"

The newborn suddenly pinched at Cesc’s cheek without warning, nothing too hard mind you, but it was surely not a surprise anyone would have outright enjoyed if they were expecting the caress to continue. When the stag’s skin softened and puckered between her fingers the girl’s eyes darkened and that smile curled itself into a petite frown, somewhat puzzled but mostly discouraged.

Cesc felt very similar to Doucette which meant not very similar to her at all. Ren’s wings almost buzzed with agitation, flicking in a one, two, three pattern like fingers tapping one after another on a desk.

It had been so long the red head could hardly remember the short job she’d worked over the holidays to save for the classes she’d needed to pursue the new career path that had been decided upon as everything in Doucette’s life: impulsively. It certainly had not felt like an entire year of silence had passed between the three of them, but that wasn’t really what brought the redhead up short.

Of nothing?” Doe echoed, classic red blush creeping up her cheeks and almost hiding her freckles. That was some nerve, wasn’t it? A year of nothing from her? Does a friendship not go both ways? Was she not here, with Revontulet, the moment she’d left the lab? And yet here was their boy, obviously not as much of a newborn as would be appropriate for them to pass of that they simply ‘hadn’t the time’ yet. Perhaps for the first time Doucette looked truly upset at Shepard, and not in her weepy-eyed way but an I’m-very-close-to-being-angry sort of manner.

Lucky for him, the French woman swept Doucette into a hug and distracted her long enough that the hurt ebbed away slightly. It was, after all, almost impossible to be upset with the enthusiastic Vivi. “I named her Revontulet” Doe replied without further detail after returning the hug, albeit a little stiffly.

At the sound of her name Ren turned her head, frown still out of place on her small lips but eyes less unhappy and more interested. They were talking about her?

Cesc lifted his eyebrows when the newborn pinched him -- not an incredulous look, but rather one of surprise, and the skin between her fingers tightened as he could not repress a smile and a quiet, low laugh. He remained where he was, looking at the girl, patiently waiting for her to make her own conclusions about whatever it was she was testing. The little frown was met with this smile, and a slight questioning incline of Rhedefre's head.

The blush and the look of annoyance registered as equally incomprehensible to Shepard. Had Doucette told Vivi she was going abroad? To visit her family, maybe? Had she left some sign of where she was going and Shepard had simply missed it? His own grin dissolved into his natural faint frown, and he was, for once, very happy to have Vivi dash in and push him aside.

She couldn't possibly be angry with him, could she? What on earth for?

"My sweetest one, she is beautiful, but beautiful!" Vivi murmured, looking for a long moment at Revontulet. The glowing hair, the pale beautiful face, the pretty mouth, the fluttering wings! She was an otherworldy beauty. But not even this beauty could keep Vivi from enjoying the presence of her old friend to its fullest just then. The Frenchwoman was unconcerned with any feelings of upset regarding their prolonged absence in each others' lives -- Doe was here now, and with Revontulet (what a name!) and that was all that mattered. Her look was innocent, then, and only curious as she turned from Ren to Doe. "My goodness, come in, lovely ones! And I must hear all, and we must make proper introductions-- where you have been, what you have been up to! When did this gorgeous creature arrive in your life? Ah! I left many messages when our boy arrived, Rhedefre, but it is just as well we meet now, when we can all be together."

The woman’s comments had Revon straightening slightly, though it was obvious she always held herself with a level of dignity, the compliments flattered the newborn into a pose which could be defined as preening. With wings stretched full and hair shook back from her face, the frei radiated elegance and poise.

Neon blues slid between the three new faces, intrigued now by the look upon the older man’s face, shifting from a smile to a frown as he watched her guardian. Curious, Ren moved over to him, slipping between the two woman as they caught up until she was before Shepard. Personal space was invaded, but not uncomfortably slow as she inspected him with open curiosity. His face was different than Zeke’s, different than the pink one’s.

Reaching out, the aurora used one finger to push at the corner of his mouth, giving him a lopsided smile-frown.

Doucette was now very flustered. Her anger had always ebbed away when Vivi was in sight, but she was trying very hard to hold on to it. This whole situation left the woman feeling very slighted indeed and the three of them (well, to be fair their boy was not responsible for the situation but here he was included in the mayhem) seemed to have none of the shame or remorse the redhead felt they should be feeling.

Messages?” the woman echoed again, confusion layering upon confusion. Doe was beginning to feel that she was nothing more than a recorder at this point, repeating back words like a dumbstruck parrot. “I never got any messages, Vivi. I must have picked up the phone a hundred times to call you, but because I never heard from I assumed...” Her voice grew faint and she pursed her lips.

Suddenly Doucette realized what Revontulet was doing to Shepard and with a little noise of protest reached out and took the girl’s hand away. “I’m sorry, she has just been touching everything and everyone. I’m not sure why. The first thing she did when we met was pinch my cheeks.

Ren flicked her wings once unhappily, but continued to watch Shepard.

Shepard watched Doucette an extra moment, his eyebrows furrowed, and thus did not notice that Revontulet had invaded his personal space until she filled his gaze completely, her bright, innocent, curious eyes looking him over. Up close, she was as disarmingly beautiful as she was far away, all of her smooth and almost gleamingly perfect. Shepard's frown lifted into an expression of mild bemusement -- what on earth could the Raevan want with him instead of Rhede or Doe or Vivi? -- and his arms went up slightly, as though bracing the Raevan. He allowed her to prod into his cheek, but could not help but let out a faint "Oi," as she did so.

Rhedefre, from his post, watched her as she fluttered away from him, unable to stop the smile that bloomed across his face. She was a graceful thing, and so inquisitive he could not help but just watch her as she moved and explored.

Vivi, meanwhile, stopped her flurry of movement, realizing that something was, perhaps, actually wrong between them and Doucette. She tapped her chin, thinking back to the days when she had called Doe...

"No, that cannot be -- not unless you switched your number! Oh, I am certain of it ... but perhaps I am wrong? No, perhaps I am? A man answered once, I remember, and he was rather brusque ... perhaps I misdialed all this time? No, but your voice was on the answering machine!" She stopped, looking at Doucette with her arms akimbo, tilting her head to one side. Her hair tumbled over her shoulder as she did so. "J'ai les idées embrouillées!"

The aurora’s grin grew wider at the strange noise that escaped Shepard’s lips when she poked at his cheek. If it had not been for Doucette pulling her back, much to the newborn’s unhappiness, she would have continued to poke at his face, exploring for new sounds.

As it was, Revon drifted closer to her guardian, wings rising and falling against the curve of her back in a steady rhythm reminiscent of breathing. Already the glow in her hair was fading to its normal tone, having not overly stuffed herself on moonlight on the way over. Despite the dissipation, there was still a striking vibrancy to the frei’s hair, and every movement she made seemed to show off that she was aware it was her best feature.

Cesc’s bright smile caught her attention as Doucette and Vivi continued on with their chatter. It was fairly meaningless to her and the pink frei had not been off-limits when she’d pinched him. Ren put her free hand out, palm up, and looked at the other expectantly across the distance, a simple, sweet smile on her lips. There was no real indication of what she was waiting for, but waiting was certainly the indication in her pose.

Doucette had lost interest in the newborn’s movements, secure in the knowledge that she was in some minor way tethering the girl to herself. How much trouble could she get into now? Vivi’s words had absorbed the redhead and she shook those curls stubbornly before the action stopped suddenly. Although her head no longer shook, the spring in her kinky locks continued to bounce against her cheeks for another moment, accentuating the wide, startled look that cause velvet blues to pop and jaw to lower itself by a few degrees.

You spoke with a man?” she asked, again the awkward, echoing parrot. Doe felt ill, and for the first time her cheeks paled instead of pinked, making her freckles stand out on her face. “Heavy...Irish accent?” Doucette let go of Ren to wrap both arms about her middle. She was sure she was going to puke. Or maybe faint.

I’m so sorry. He must have deleted you messages. He should have told me that you called.” The words were stilted and breathy, as if she was trying to swallow and talk at the same time. But then there was her anger again and though she straightened the arms remained wrapped about her stomach. “I am so sorry Vivi. It wont happen again. I should have called, should have made sure. I didn’t realize what was happening. Shepard, I’m sorry,” she said, turning her gaze on him with a pleading sort of expression. He shouldn’t forgive her for getting mad, but she still managed to hope that he would.
PostPosted: Sun Jun 16, 2013 10:33 pm

Rhedefre kept watching the newborn's movements, the brightness of his smile unwavering as she continued to explore. When she turned to him, he tilted his head again noiselessly, asking in motions what she wanted. His arms were down and his wings brightly splayed, all of his body language open. She put her hand out and he waited a moment before acting -- the motion reminded him of himself, dim memories of the hours after his birth, of putting his hand with Eiry's. He put his larger hand over hers, slotting theirs together, his cool palm over hers. He did not grip her tightly, in case the sensation was unwelcome.

Shepard and Vivi were not party to this greeting between the freis. They both looked at Doucette with some worry as she spoke, the smile fading from the Frenchwoman's face and the frown deepening on the Aussie's. She had visibly paled, then wrapped her arms around herself like brace, a hug. What was she apologizing for? For a brief moment, Shepard and Vivi exchanged concerned glances.

"Doucette, that is nothing, you need not apologize to either of us. But..." Vivi began slowly. "Is all... well? Who is this man that deleted messages meant for you? You do not have the boyfriend who controls you, do you?"

Shepard said nothing, silently glowering under the idea that Doe might be in some kind of bad situation. It seemed like a real possibility, now that he thought of it. The job she'd had before, where she felt so upset at seeing them, the lack of contact... something fierce and protective rumbled deep inside of Shepard Ryan, and he couldn't quite escape the desire to punch some unnamed man right in his goddamn teeth.

Pale, stained glass wings gave a little hum of excitement as they fluttered behind her, stirring the air and causing bits of her hair to dance in the breeze. The aurora’s skin was cool to the touch, not uncomfortably so, but slightly below the average human’s temperature. Now that Doucette no longer held her hostage the frei drifted closer to the other, closing the gap between them without letting go of his hand.

Touch. Revon liked touching.

It felt distant, as if she herself wasn’t touching directly but feeling his hand through a layer of something else, but she liked it all the same. With her free hand the newborn reached out and touched at his cheek again, not pinching this time. A little poke was given with one nail to watch the skin dimple under the pressure, but it turned into a curious caress along his jaw and into the line of his hair. Ren parted her lips as if she were going to say something, but after a moment she closed them again, looking unperturbed, as if she’d never planned to say anything at all.

Somehow the question from Vivi and Shepard made her laugh, a hint of nervousness laced within the tones, but otherwise relaxed. So caught off guard was she by the question that she simply couldn’t have stopped herself if she’d tried. “A boyfriend? Goodness no.” the redhead replied once she’d caught her breath, “Just my brother, Liam. He’s...living with me for the time being. Down on his luck recently.

Doucette felt uncomfortable, but in a different way than before. She wanted very much to explain things to her friends, but certainly it wasn’t that easy. And yet, there was no way she could outright lie to them. Twisting her hands together, distantly realizing that Ren had left her grasp but was apparently well taken care of by Vivi’s boy, the Irish woman considered what she was going to tell the two looking at her with unhappy expressions. “He’s busy. Might have just forgotten to give me the messages? I don’t really know why he didn’t pass them on,” she murmured, casting her gaze to the side slightly. It wasn’t completely untrue...Liam was quite busy these days with whatever business he’d gotten himself into, and Doucette could make a well-educated guess for why Liam didn’t pass the messages along, but she couldn’t exactly read the man’s mind and know for certain!

Things have just been...difficult recently. Money’s been tight.

Cesc liked the feel of the aurora's skin. It was not so cold as Zurine's, not so warm as Shepard or Vivi's -- perhaps like Zul's, just a touch colder. Only that Revontulet was also... something else. Not as pliant. Smooth, beautifully smooth, and just barely chilled, the way Rhedefre imagined touching the night sky would feel. He would have held her hand the entire night, had she let him, his thumb stroking over her knuckles, but then she moved forward. Feeling his face. Touching the hard line of his jaw and the soft curl of his hair. He bent, and his ears flicked gently, giving her access to other textures in the velvet of his antlers and ears.

Vivi and Shepard watched Doucette carefully, both of them straightening unconsciously, their expressions both one of concern. It was only a sudden look at Shepard -- at his darkened eyes and flat mouth -- that made Vivi relax her own posture. Of course Doe would be nervous and uncomfortable! They were looking at her like she was a troubled teen.

"Doucette, my most beautiful one, you know that you can come to us any time," the Frenchwoman assured, pulling her friend into a quick hug, her hands staying on Doe's arms even as she pulled away. "Do not ever think otherwise! We will help with whatever needs helping."

Even if helping includes tossing this dickbag out of your life, Shepard thought grimly, but the words stayed in his head and out of his mouth. He tried to smile just briefly, but all he could do was give a short nod of agreement.

Had she known the word, the newborn would have said she felt blissful. Holding hands felt good, the touching was good, but the way his touch drifted, brushing over the back of her hand made the moonstone shiver with delight. Fairy wings quivered with sensation and Ren’s smile broke as she let out the softest of laughs, brief and effervescent.

The guardian was startled by the noise, nearly jumping at it as she turned her head towards the newborn. She’d not uttered a sound all night, not to Zeke nor to Anya. Doucette had not noticed that she’d been so silent until she’d heard the laughter and her mind registered how strange it was, how this sound was something she’d have to get used to in her house. It relaxed her then, as she watched Revontulet lean into the pink male, excited by his invitation to touch his antlers, which she explored with the free hand, unwilling to let go of the other.

Revon marvelled at the soft, velvety texture of his horns, her expression melting between interest and confusion as the thoughts in her head drifted from one to another until finally she ceased the examination and leaned back, her very blue gaze looking into his very golden one.

Oh...I do hope they’ll like each other, Doe said, hugging Vivi back with a happiness she hadn’t felt in a long time. “Thank you for the offer Vivi. What I would really love help with right now is locating a cold beer. Is it too late to invite myself in so you can tell me stories of you boy here?” The redhead grinned broadly, transported years back to when they’d first all become friends and there hadn’t been so many cares in the world. She just wanted to drink and chat with them, laugh with them.

Reaching over she gave Shepard’s stomach a poke, “Stop making that face, Shep, or it will freeze that way,” she teased.

Rhedefre remained still as Revontulet explored his antler, one hand still entwined with hers. It was strangely intimate, all the closeness, but there was so much innocence in her expression and her curiousity, that it did not seem untoward. Rhedefre dropped his eyes and wondered about this new frei -- he'd heard of her, although at the time it wasn't a her, of a fel essence that he'd 'interacted' with when he was still just 'parts' and not whole.

If only he could remember! If only bits of broken light could have memory.

He looked up and she was meeting his gaze, bold and interested. He looked at her without artifice, plainly enjoying their exchange. Without asking or speaking, he reached his free hand out and touched her hair, very gently, the glow enveloping his fingers. His thumb and forefinger circled, feeling the silk strands between them.

Vivi, meanwhile, was not paying the freis much attention. To her quick gaze, it seemed that they were getting acquainted, and she did not mean to interfere by introducing herself into the mix. So instead she kept her attention on Doucette, smiling brightly and nodding.

"A beer! What a rare object, but I believe perhaps it is that we have one inside! Come, come -- all of us, or do the you two prefer to stay outside?" She did not call them by name, but she leaned over and looked up to get Cesc's attention. He flicked his gaze toward her and then back at Revontulet.

"What do you prefer?" he asked, knowing well the newborn might not get his meaning. All the same, he wanted to give her control over the outcome. He gestured toward the inside of the bakery and back out to where they were, attempting to convey her options.

Shepard's frown did not dissipate as Doe prodded him. He was not put at ease by her explanation -- if anything, he was more perturbed to know that she did have some kind of parasitic hanger-on in her life. But he attempted to seem more comfortable, shrugging mildly and replying to her warning: "It may've already."

For a long, quiet moment the aurora watched him, her gaze somewhat expectant. Anya had not been so affectionate with her, and although that had been acceptable, she preferred this kind of interaction.

When the male dipped his fingers into the blue glow of her hair, much diminished but still quite the wonder, the newborn closed her eyes. Lashes fluttered against the apples of her cheeks as the girl let out a soft, sweet sigh, lips parted in a small smile. Revon did not remember the bottle, the playmates with her pink counterpart, but she felt content and happy and safe. Her hand tightened slightly in his for a brief moment, as if the aurora could express that to him through the simple gesture.

The French woman’s voice registered very far away to the frei, as she’d not been paying attention to it, but when Cesc spoke she opened her eyes once more and looked at him for a moment. Her silence was prolonged and it seemed almost as if she hadn’t understood the question at all before her shoulders lifted into the slightest of shrugs. It mattered little to Revontulet. Though the outside had its certain charms she enjoyed, she was interested to see this place he lived. She was interested to see what smelled so unique.

Seeing the girl’s ambivalence, Doucette made the decision for the both of them, “I’d rather we all went inside,” she said, hoping it sounded like a suggestion. Certainly she trusted the gentle, pink male that Vivi had no doubt raised with the best of manners, but it was only the first night that she was in charge of the girl – her girl – and she didn’t want to let Ren out of her sight.

Shepard’s reply earned a snort from the redhead and she gave him a stern (well, as stern as Doucette gets) look. “I’m sure Revontulet would be happy to remedy that for you then,” she teased, mimicking the cheek-poke that Ren had done to him earlier to give him a lop-sided smile. Doe was not fooled by his faux relaxation, but there were no words she could say which would have made the situation better anyway.

Following Vivi inside for one of those cold beers, Doucette talked animatedly with her friend, questioning her boy’s entry into the world and all the little moments in between. Certainly Ren would not be exactly the same, but still she wanted to know all the details. The aurora drifted behind, lazy but with a sense of poise and purpose despite the friendly atmosphere.

Not once did she let go of the pink man’s hand that night.
