It's nice to see familiar faces... So to speak.
To catch up on our lives, our accomplishments, what has changed and what has remained the same.
To have a constant to return to. To have a personal history against which to measure your progress... People who remember who you once were, whether you like that or not.

I met up with an old friend yesterday. He admitted he really wanted to see me because I've known him so long and I would be able to see how much he's changed.
He's just continued down the same path. He claims he's opened up socially, but he's been socially comfortable with me for years, so I had no way of telling that. Otherwise, he's decided psychedellics have changed his life for the better, and he's moving to BC for the weather and the people.
Good for him, he'll be happy with it at least for a while. No worse off than where he is now, and quite possibly better. I do find it sad that he's giving substance credit for his own advancements, but it's clear that all he's interested in at this point in his life is experiencing new sensations and living 'free' of society.

I came home shaking my head with a smile. Life goes on, and we find happiness when we realize we can keep a roof over our head and food in our belly while doing what we want.
A big house, a cool car, and other portions of the American Dream leave us hollow, because there's always a nicer house in a nicer neighbourhood and a nicer car and a prettier woman and a smarter kid and a better-behaved pet...
Stuff doesn't bring happiness. Other people don't even necessarily bring happiness. It has to come from within. From a deep and honest knowledge that, whatever it is the future holds, you'll be able to meet it and keep going, keep finding means of being happy.

This has gotten long..
Life's good, so live it and enjoy it and don't worry too much. The world keeps turning, day and night will keep on coming.

This is so true...it doesn't matter what I do, or accomplish. I want MORE. Comparison keeps me striving for something BETTER. I think it really boils down to a perception of self-worth based on others percieved standards, which should be inconsiderable, but...it totally isn't in practice. Anxiety..it sucks.

Oh man, I could go on such a rant about happiness. Comparison can be good as long as we use it right, such as for motivation. Some people end up gettin' really depressed because they compare themselves to others and view themselves as being not as good. But as it's been said, there will always be someone with "more," so to speak.

And it is so true that havin' a bunch of s**t doesn't make us happier in the long run. Granted, gettin' a cool new toy feels great, but that good feelin' doesn't last forever and it isn't the type of gain we can depend upon for happiness. In fact, it's been found that those who give feel much better, even if it's somethin' as small as givin' someone some time to cry on your shoulder, or offerin' advice.

As for meetin' up with old friends and catchin' up and what not, I tend to just keep myself updated with people's lives through facebook, since most of my friends have moved away and chances are, we won't meet physically. Everyone's gettin' married and travellin' the world and havin' a career and it's...weird. If anythin', I think I'm the person people are shakin' their heads at. xd
