Delta was breathing heavily as he flew down to the ground, stumbling a bit as he landed. He'd finally escaped his sister's notice and her chase-oriented games, but now the colt needed something else to occupy him. Something quiet. Uncle Haides was quiet, but right now he was talking with Aunt Jaromila; he didn't want to interrupt what appeared to be a pleasant conversation. Plouton was out of the question too; he would be with Lacey or doing something equally exhausting. His gaze finally fell on Jeralyn. She was quiet. She wouldn't be bothered if he joined her... right? He timidly trotted over to her, settling himself a foot or so away from the filly so he wouldn't bump her with every shift of his wings. He shyly avoided her gaze, silently catching his breath.

Jeralyn was busy munching on some grass not far from her parents, when she felt a presence next to her. She brought her head up to look at who would come over and saw it was her cousin, Delta. She fixed her bright green eyes on him, wondering why he was over here. " Something I can help you with?"Jeralyn asked quietly in an emotionless voice.

Delta sprang to his feet, flustered. He shook his head, red with embarrassment at how easily spooked and easily spotted he was. "N-No... I-I'm fine..." he managed, his gaze instinctively averting to anywhere but Jeralyn's gaze.

Jeralyn sighed, wondering why her cousin was being so jumpy...again. She hadn't done anything scary...she never could understand why he got so spooked about things.
"Delta, you do know you do not have to be scared of me, right? Did I say or do anything to say otherwise?"Jeralyn questioned. She did not know why he was afraid around her, but hopefully he would be able to answer her question.

Delta nodded to the first question and shook his head to the second. He wasn't like his bright, perky mother or his plucky older sister. He wasn't brave or smart or strong... He was a coward. Even though she'd only spoken to him, Delta couldn't help feeling nervous and scared. Maybe it was the horn; Iota had one, Plouton had one, Jeralyn had one... he didn't. Feeling inferior, maybe? Or just instinctively fearing that tactical advantage they all had over him?

Jeralyn watched her cousin like a hawk, watching as he answered her questions with his head.
"I am not going to hurt you, Delta, in fact, would never dream of doing so. You are family and I always protect family. So please, stop looking like I am going to poke you or something,"Jeralyn told him gently, feeling like she could put down her mask with him, so to speak.

Delta could feel the filly's gaze on him. Was she going to scold him or call him weird like Lacey did? He blinked and looked up for a moment when she spoke, then averted his gaze, embarrassed at his thoughts. He wordlessly shuffled forward, hesitating before lightly pressing his forehead against her neck. His eyes were clenched shut with instinctive fear, but he'd made contact at least.

Jeralyn waited to see what her cousin would do, waiting patiently for him to make some kind of move or sound. When he placed his forehead against her neck, she put her snout against his ears and nuzzled them.
"See, I told you that you would be fine, Delta. Nothing happened to you, just like I promised,"Jeralyn spoke calmly.

Delta said nothing. His wings snapped shut and he nestled himself into Jeralyn's side, not too unlike the way he did with his mother. His eyes were open again, but his gaze remained averted. No, he couldn't really say he was scared anymore, but he was still uncomfortable. Nervous? Maybe. Embarrassed? Completely. Waves of self-loathing were crashing into him. He was pathetic. He couldn't even stop being scared of his own family. He was such a coward...

Jeralyn looked over and saw that Delta was not looking at her, which made her wonder why. It wasn't like she was going to hurt him, she had already showed him that.
"Delta, is there a reason you are so scared of us? It is not like I have ever hurt you, right? Yes, I do not show my emotions very often, but it is like my dad used to be,"Jeralyn explained.

Delta could only flinch. "... Bird," he said finally, his voice soft and meek. He lifted his gaze, his red eyes meeting Jeralyn's glowing green ones for a brief moment before fixing on the ground again. "Lyn's a bird."

Jeralyn tilted her head to the side, what did he mean she was a bird? She did not have wings like Grandma Serenity, so it wasn't that. She had never tried to sing, so there was no telling if she was musically inclined.
"Delta, you have me stumped with that you just said. What do you mean I am a bird?"Jeralyn inquired.

Delta shuffled in place, clamming up again. How was he supposed to explain it? He barely understood it himself... He blinked and lifted his head, however, when he heard a familiar giggle behind him. "Mama."
"You were shuffling." Delta blushed, getting another giggle out of his mother. "What's the matter, Eku?" Delta wordlessly pressed himself against his mother's side, eyes sliding shut as he pressed his forehead to her leg. "... Oh? Is that all?" Beta beamed at Jeralyn. "Eku told you that you were something else, right? What was it?"

Jeralyn saw the shuffling and wondered if Delta was having a hard time expressing himself. She was about to ask what was going on, when she heard a giggle she knew. She turned to look and saw her Aunt Beta, wondering how long she had been there. At the question, she nodded her heard that Delta had called her something else.
"Delta called me a bird, Aunt Beta. I do not understand what he means,"Jeralyn replied.

Beta nodded, smiling. "Eku can see hearts," she replied cheerfully, as if it was the most normal thing in the world. Delta, however, began shuffling again. His mother pouted. "Don't be like that! It's a talent." She nuzzled her shy little boy and continued. "From the way he describes it to me, it sounds like he sees the shapes that everyone's hearts take. And the better he knows someone, the easier it is to see it." Her expression brightened. "And of course, family members are the closest people to you besides a mate, so..."
Delta stuck to by his mother, looking much less cheerful than the mare. His mother still amazed him. How could she so easily explain what he couldn't--and do so in such a casual manner?
