One more time. He had to look one more time. Now even his adopted parent was questioning his searching, but he just couldn't stop. Gau needed to find her. No matter what, he had to find Vanity. It had become an obsession; every day he went out to look for her, and every night he slept on the highest point of terrain so that he could see just a bit farther and maybe spot her in the distance. Why did he let her go with that Demoni character? Why didn't he stop her? Yes, she would've hated him for it, probably called him every name under the sun. But she'd still be there, still be safe. He'd know where she was. He was so stupid! Sweat poured from his frame and he finally gave into his body's plea for rest. He laid down under the nearest tree, eyes sliding closed. Almost immediately, the image of the unearthly stallion who had accidentally saved him as a colt came to his mind. What would that stallion have done in such a situation? Well, that was probably an easy answer; that stallion would've torn Demoni to shreds before letting him anywhere near a family member. But Gau wasn't that stallion. He didn't have that 'kill on sight' impulse. He wanted to preserve, to protect. And yet, he'd failed. Vanity... Vanity wasn't safe with that stallion, was she? Not safe in the least...

Vanity's dreams for months had been filled with flashes of her family that she had left. The little makeshift one she didn't necessarily care for, yet they had still taken her in. The makeshift father that had calmed her tears at night, but let her siblings believe she was strong and proud during the day without a word. Had they known the pain inside her heart from loosing her birth parents in that terrible day? No... more than likely not. She hadn't let anyone know. She barely let herself think about it. All she remembered was fire, and wings and terrible terrible things... And now here she was, following this winged stranger around who called himself Demoni. Except... She had gotten frightened recently. Just the other day, Demoni had introduced her to a flaming beast friend of his named Ruin, and fear struck her heart, though she made sure not to show it. She was good at not showing any of her feelings. Slowly, her red pain filled eyes opened as she looked around her. Night had fallen and the two demons that she was with had fallen asleep. Though for her size, she was able to creep to her hooves and out of their dank cave and into the full moonlit sky. Home. She had to go home and fast, because Ruin would come after her and he would hurt her for leaving. That she knew. Gau... her dear friend and make-shift brother, though she had never seen him or Pajanka as siblings, would protect her right? Her dad would protect her, aunt Serenity and her family would protect her, right? It was her only hope. Vanity hurried as quietly and as far away as she could before the dawn's sun rose, and even then she kept lumbering on, her head looking behind her every few minutes to make sure that her death was not following her. She had to get home.

When Gau's eyes fluttered open, dawn had passed. No one was around, though. Why...? Right. He'd fallen asleep searching... He hauled himself to his feet, automatically looking around for any signs of life. Finally, his eyes set on a figure in the distance and instinctively headed towards it. Maybe it was her... maybe, this time, it would be her...

Vanity stumbled along the ground. She'd been traveling for so fast, that her stamina was wearing down and she just couldn't go no more. Her red eyes blinked as she tried to get back to her hooves and only succeeded after a long attempt. She looked up, and just as she did she saw a dark figure comign towards her. Fright filled her chest as she thought it could be Demoni or Ruin, but as the figure got closer she saw the blue and knew it wasn't one of them.

As he approached, the figure's purple mane stood out to him. Even closer and the figure was grey and somewhat larger for an Azrien. A draft mare. A very familiar draft mare. Vanity. It was her. Gau wanted to call out and let out a whinny of joy, but all he could do was silently trudge towards his goal.
He finally stopped a few feet from his lost sister. "It is you," he whispered, closing the gap to lightly rest his head across her shoulders in a hug. "I was starting to worry that I..."

Vanity's body shook as she stepped back from Gau. In her months of being away she had become unused to any motions of physical contact and it was wierding her out. Her body shook as she struggled to stay standing and comprehend what he was saying. Most of his words sounded muffled and garbled, until she finally collapsed onto the ground, her legs unable to support her weight anymore.

Gau's eyes widened when she collapsed. "Van..." She was exhausted. "... Rest," he encouraged quietly. "I'll keep watch." He'd protect her this time. No one was going to take her away.

Vanity leaned onto the blue and black stallion as her eyes closed and the call of sleep claimed her. She knew she would be safe in his hooves.
Morning passed and the afternoon sun rose and with it Vanity opened her eyes somewhat rested. Her thoughts were muddled but she soon realized what had happened and looked around for Gau who was supposed to be keeping watch.
Had demoni and Ruin come and hurt Gau? Was it her fault? Oh she wouldnt be able to handle it if she had gotten Gau hurt.

Demoni had come, but he hadn't attacked; apparently the demon was smart enough not to strike when Gau was so close to an army of allies. Instead, Gau faced a verbal assault. Most of it just washed harmlessly over him, but there was a poison dart of a comment that got to him. Were his feelings alright? Was it alright to care so deeply for Vanity, even if she was is sister? Or maybe in spite of it? This wasn't a reaction for sibling being hurt. These feelings were... deeper. Intimate. Was this really alright?
Stirring behind him roused him from his thoughts. He turned, gentle silver eyes fixing on the sleepy red ones of his adopted sister. "Good morning."

Vanity jumped at the sound of Gau's voice, but realizing it was him she relaxed. "Gau... How did you find me?" She asked confusedly as she looked around at her surroundigns.

Gau glanced away, embarrassed. "I was worried, so I've been... searching for you." His voice's volume dropped steadily as he continued. "Every day since you left..." This was so embarrassing. What would she say? Knowing Vanity, it would be something bold and blunt, the perfect thing to cut like a knife into him.

Vanity was quiet as she mulled over what Gau had said. He had been looking for her for the months she'd been gone? "Why?" She asked after a moment, instead of her usual heartless cutting jibe she would normally make to him in a situation like this. She was too emotionally exhausted to do that right now.

Gau swore he was blushing so hard that Vanity would be able to see it, even with his black pelt. "B-Because I was worried!" he spluttered. "I care about your safety, and when you left with that demon guy..." Was it really worry? Or was it jealousy? Longing? Everyone had called it an obsession. Maybe they were right... "L-Look, I was just worried, ok? I can't protect someone who isn't near me." And he thought it was embarrassing before...

Vanity watched him, realizing that he was discomforted, but why? She shook her head and sighed. "I should have never left with him, Gau... He was not who I thought he was..." She looked down at her plate sized hooves.

Gau forced his embarrassment away to comfort his adopted sister. "At least you figured it out before it was too late, right?" He gave her a gentle nudge. "You're here now; that's all that matters."
