I think more grief and beauty dwell with truth.
Andromeda, in fetters by the sea,
Star-pale with anguish till young Perseus came.

Raine Constantine flipped through the pages of a book with a leather cover slipped on, both to protect its original cover and to hide whatever it was she was currently reading. She glanced up, watching the rain patter against the glass windows of the cafe; the sun would set in a couple hours, and then everything would be cast in a soft glow: the streetlights and headlights reflecting on the slick surfaces.

She only minded the weather because she hated moisture and what it did to both her clothing and her hair. A slight frown slipped across her face, before she looked back to her book, and took another sip.

It was fairly empty in the cafe; only a few other patrons, who'd been there before the rain started, occupied the other tables. Nevertheless, it seemed like there were few seats left. She tried not to be rude and look at the others, but now and again she was curious.

Raine brushed a piece of her bangs away from her brow and looked back at the book, uncrossing her legs and recrossing them. She sat with the ankle of her left leg resting on the knee of her right. A particular bit in the poem she was reading caught her attention, and she quietly read it aloud to herself, enjoying it and the sound of rain. "Less moves me with her suffering than she, The slim girl figure fettered to dark shame, That nightly haunts the park, there, like a shade, Trailing her wretchedness from street to street."

Raine Constantine smiled to herself, but looked up suddenly.

Rhiannon caught herself staring a few seconds too late and her eyes met the young man’s who sat by himself just a few chairs away. But it wasn’t because of his appearance, nor the verse he’d just read.

The sound of his voice caught her ears, low and soft on the words of a poem she did not know, but one she just then decided she wouldn’t mind hearing the rest.

Despite having no problem casually observing people, she had no intention of actually making contact with them. A slight panic caused her heart to flutter wildly, and she hastily drew her own book to her face, perhaps a bit too enthusiastically for she nearly lost her grip, thwacking her nose on accident in an attempt to regain control.

Long pale blond hair was drawn over her left shoulder, haphazardly braided only a few inches and then tied off. The rest she used almost as a blanket for her shorts and tee-shirt did nothing to protect against the sudden chill of the rain. It didn’t matter though. She wasn’t planning on wearing this outfit home. She had every intention of powering up once the sun set... but the rain made it so much less appealing to leave.

Instead, she buried herself into the cushions of the couch she was occupying, her bare feet drawn up against her as she hoped no one would notice her, or care enough to pay her any attention.

She wasn't sure why she'd looked up; it was just one of those feelings, like it had to be done. And she didn't particularly regret looking up, anyway: the young woman whose eyes she met was quite lovely, even if she was apparently sitting barefoot. Raine, thanks to her obsession with her appearance, kept up to date on weather conditions frequently: she had been well-prepared for the rain, and nestled into a cafe long before the first drops fell.

Out of the side of her eye, Raine regarded the young lady, and watched as she accidentally seemed to hit herself on the nose with her book. She hid a smile behind her own book, and made some mental calculations: barefoot, a t-shirt, shorts, and probably more than a little cold? She swept the warm jacket off the back of her couch, and made her way over to the chair, book in hand.

"Raine Constantine," she introduced herself, bowing just slightly to the woman. It was a manners thing, after all. "I hope I am not interrupting your reading, and forgive me for being so bold, but... are you cold? And perhaps... would you mind keeping me company until the rain stops-- or until you need to leave, naturally?" Raine asked, smiling gently down at the young woman. Her long, blond hair was certainly impressive.

Rhiannon never considered herself shy. A loner, maybe, but she didn’t think she had a problem being around people — she was just always very skeptical of them.

So when the person who looked too handsome to be any man she’d met before made his way over to her chair, she could only raise her eyebrows with suspicion. It wasn’t as though there was anything threatening or strange about his presence, but since people were, well… people… she couldn’t help drawing conclusions more quickly than she probably should.

Still… a jacket might be nice to borrow, especially since she was cold and wet from the sudden change in weather.

“Rhiannon,” she replied cautiously, not formal (or trusting) enough to share her last name with strangers. But she did sit up slightly and lower her book, as if she hadn’t just been trying to hide her embarrassment of being caught staring.

She hesitated for a moment longer before shrugging slightly, wondering if that was good enough of an answer for this young man to accept, or if he would decide she wasn’t worth the time.

Sometimes, she hoped her pessimism was needless.

Raine didn't seem to be offput by Rhiannon's skepticism. On the contrary; she was understanding of the fact that she had, essentially, just approached a very pretty stranger, who would likely have been approached often by strangers with less than savory motives. As a result, she tried to remedy the situation.

"I could be completely mentally unsound for approaching you out of the blue, right?" Raine suggested, smiling; a joke, clearly. She took Rhiannon lowering her book as half an invitation to approach. "Please, borrow this. You can hand it back at any moment, and I will not say a word," Raine offered, holding her jacket out. It was cut for a man's frame, which suited her, but would probably be a little large or strange-fitting on Rhiannon if she tried to button it up. Still, the point was warmth.

Raine tentatively sat herself down near Rhiannon, without infringing on her personal space. "What is it that you're reading?" Raine asked, genuinely interested.

Rhiannon continued to stare at the beautiful young man who’d approached her, although an eyebrow raised in bemusement at the joke. There were many things she was thinking, and perhaps the this person’s mental stability was one of them… but she wasn’t about to share that. She didn’t want to give this person a reason to retaliate.

And yet, when the jacket was offered to her, she only hesitated a moment longer before taking it and pulling it over… her legs. It was long enough to pull all the way up to her shoulders, and once she had the collar under her chin, she slipped her arms through the sleeves, wearing it backwards with her legs tucked up inside. It was her own fault for how she’d dressed that day, but if she was going to be offered a jacket like this, might as well… right…?

There was a curious glance towards Raine as Rhiannon settled back into the chair, pushing up the sleeves in order to take hold of her book once more. At first she thought she was being teased about her reading choice, but she couldn’t hear any malintent in Raine’s voice. She hesitated again, before shifting the book so the cover could be read. The words “The Education of Henry Adams” was embossed onto the front — an autobiography which… she was very aware wasn’t of everyone’s interest, but it suited her just fine. Reading about other people made her life seem more… normal.
