Efflo knew flying was important to Gabby. The dragon flew everywhere when he wasn’t burdened by his earthbound boilfriend. The pony boil felt bad, he wanted so desperately to share this with him but whenever he brought it up, Gabby seemed evasive. He didn’t blame him, after what had happened during their first attempt, they’d both walked away a little traumatized. Fully healed now, from everything, Efflo was determined to try again. He loved Gabby very much, and trusted him more than anything but… This time he was going to be prepared. They were going to share this moment and nothing was going to wreck it, not his fear of heights, not Gabby’s need to show off. Nope, this time was going to be perfect. He had tied his long hair up into a ponytail, trying to keep it out of the way and he had even worn his short shorts again, just for good luck. He’d texted Gabby, asking his boilfriend to meet him at the field where they'd played sports not long ago but refraining from giving him a reason why. Efflo stood there, waiting, goggles on and parachute strapped firmly to his back.

Gabby was fully expecting another day filled with sports, that ended early due to those shorts. And true to form, Efflo was wearing them. But what he didn't expect, as he landed on the grass, was the backpack and goggles. "That's a good look for you." Gabby muttered, walking the few feet between them and flicking the goggles with a finger. "You look like an explorer." He looked like a cub scout, but Gabby wasn't going to say that. He was trying to be nice today. For as long as that lasted. "What's with the pack? Are we going somewhere?"

Efflo narrowed his eyes at the flick, not entirely sure what to make of Gabby’s tone. Was explorer a good thing? Did Gabby think explorers were hot? Probably not, after all, Gabby’s attempt at being nice was just that, an attempt and Efflo was getting pretty good at reading certain cues. Still, he shook his head quickly, now was not the time to question whether his fashion statement turned the boil on. He had to focus. One hand on his hip, and the other pointing at the dragon, he fixed Gabby with a firm stare. “We’re going flying. And it’s not a backpack, it’s a parachute. Pa-ra-chute. And, as a matter of fact, I think it is a very good look for me. I picked it out all by myself.” "Well, except the shorts."

Gabby's smarmy expression faded, and he blanched (was that even possible?!) when Efflo mentioned flying. "Why? Don't you remember the last time we tried that?" Gabby's hand moved slowly up the boils side, brushing gentle caresses across the spot where he knew his claws had dug into. "There's better things we can do with our time." He bent down, tugging Efflo's lips with his teeth before leaving a peck of a kiss against them.

“But-” his protests were briefly interrupted by Gabby’s mouth on his. Though he certainly wasn’t complaining about the momentary interlude, his ears eventually drooped, and he pulled back, looking crestfallen. While he was sure that whatever Gabby was proposing would be fun, this was what he wanted to do. He wanted to prove to Gabby he could do it; he wanted Gabby to be proud of him, to want to take him flying. Efflo wanted to share this with him more than anything. He placed his hand over Gabby’s on his side, pressing it into him. “But I’m fine now, see? Don’t you want to try again? I’ll be better this time, I promise.”

Gabby looked absolutely frustrated that his attempts to distract the boil had failed. He ran his hand through his hair roughly, and turned his head away.
"This isn't about you, Efflo. It isn't about how good you can be, or what you can take, it's.." He grunted, his lower lip jutting out. When he spoke next, it came out in a very quiet, very unnaturally weak whisper.
"I'm scared. I'm scared of what could happen, and I don't just mean hurting you."

Efflo stepped in close, so his warm body was pressed up against Gabby, slipping his arms around the boil’s waist. Leaning up, he nuzzled his face against Gabby’s turned cheek, resting it there for a moment. He didn’t know what had the dragon so riled, he didn’t understand. “What do you mean, Gabriel? What else could happen?”

When he had the boil so close, wrapped up in his arms and pressed against him, it was easy to forget what he was so worried about. But even through how much he loved Efflo, and how much he knew the boil loved him, he was hesitant concerning this.
He closed his eyes and just took a few seconds to collect himself, nuzzling the cheek that pressed against him. Then he took a deep breath, steadied himself, and explained.
But first.
"You're not allowed to get mad at me for being scared about this." He opened his eyes and narrowed them, looking down at Efflo with an intense stare. "Promise?"

Efflo pulled back again, eyeing him suspiciously. “Why would I get mad? Is it something I need to get mad about?”

That was not a promise.
Gabby pulled Efflo back up against him the moment he pulled away, grunting with disappointment. He wouldn't be able to talk about something like this if the boil wasn't as close as possible. "Give me a break, Efflo. Half the things I think are perfectly normal, you'd hit me for." His fingers reached under the boils chin, tilting his head up. "Just promise me. It's important. I want to tell you, but.. it's hard." His brows furrowed, the closest to pathetic Gabby could ever get. "It's really hard to talk about."

He sighed, the sound rattling his whole body as he let himself sink against Gabby, hugging him close. Staring into Gabby’s eyes, he nodded, grasping finally the severity of the situation.
“I promise, Gabriel, I promise. You know you can tell me anything,” he said softly. He knew the dragon was right; he probably would hit Gabby for a lot of things. But still he felt a little sad, Gabby seemed so distraught, Efflo wanted him to know that he was here for him, no matter what. He nuzzled him again, apologizing for pulling away.

"Yeah." His voice cracked, and he cleared it. "I know. That's why I'm telling you this. I just want to save myself the stress of having to explain it to you without actually.. having you here." His arms squeezed, emphasizing his need. But then there was nothing left to procrastinate about, and he actually had to try and explain why flying was such a big deal for him.
"All right." He huffed with a sharp blow of air that blew his hair out of his face. "So, I'm a dragon, right? But there's tons of different kinds of dragons. I mean, there's different species, and then there's different colors, and there's even different places we come from, and it's all... it's all really kind of a mess." One side of his lip twisted up in a smile. "But for some of us - not all, just some - me, for example. We have this thing, that can happen. And it's not.. really.. something we can control."
His heart fluttered with anxiety. "I think, because, long ago, we weren't supposed to go around alone, so. If we take on a rider. There's a chance that something inside of us.. happens."
This was harder than he'd expected it to be.
"It's.. really complicated. I'm trying to explain, but I don't even have anything to compare it to. It's a bond, sure, but we have a bond." He kissed Efflo's forehead. "And it's unbreakable. But not.. I don't know. It's a bond we made, A choice, you know? It isn't some kind of force of nature." His hands tightened, tension rippling through his muscles. "I don't know what it's like. It only happens once, and then you can't.. like.. live without that person, I guess. But it isn't something you really choose, except - if you don't let people ride you."
His face pinched up slightly. This was about where he'd expected Efflo to get mad.

Efflo listened, trying his best to keep emotion out of his face, to just let Gabby explain and explain it entirely. The poor boil was so flustered, the last thing he needed was to feel like Efflo was judging him while he spoke. Yet despite Gabby’s best efforts, Efflo didn’t really understand, at all. Of course they had a bond. They loved each other! Wasn’t that a force of nature? Instead of boiling over, which was to be expected, Efflo ended up just looking sad. He couldn’t and didn’t want to imagine a life without Gabby, and he couldn’t understand why or a bond that tied two beings so closely could be bad. Was he not good enough? He knew Gabby loved him very much, but maybe it wasn’t forever, maybe he wasn’t ready to be that committed. But then again, was Efflo? He had no idea how he felt, except that he was confused and sad. If Gabby didn’t want him to ride him, he wouldn’t pressure him. As quickly as the emotions passed his face, he pushed them away, shutting them out, shutting down. They were just pesky, anyway, they'd get in the way. “It’s okay,” he replied quietly, giving the boil a squeeze before stepping away, shrugging off his backpack and goggles, setting them on the ground. When he turned back, he glanced at Gabby, forcing a smile. “We can do something else.”

"You're upset." Gabby read him like a book, and it tore him apart. "You're taking this personally. Efflo, this isn't about you. It isn't even about us. You don't understand, nobody understands.." He growled, both of his hands going into his hair now. "I just don't want to be owned. I can't stand the idea of being somebody's pet. Even you, baby. You know I love you, but.." His hands released his hair, and clenched into fists. "I didn't say we couldn't do it. I'm just.."
That quiet voice returned, the one he only used when he had to admit something he was frightfully ashamed of. "Scared."

He flattened his ears, feeling stupid, mad at himself for behaving so selfishly. Yet no matter how he felt, the words still seemed to find their way out, Efflo powerless to stop them. “I-I… I’m sorry, Gabriel. I shouldn’t, I… I love you, okay?” Even as he said the words that normally fixed everything, he still felt stupid, flat. “I love you more than anything! And… And yes, this is about you but how can you say it’s not about us? I don’t want to own you! I don’t want a pet; I just want you, my boilfriend. I want you, Gabriel. I don’t want you to be scared, I don’t want you to have to do something that scares you. But… I don’t want you to leave either.” “What happens if you bond with someone else? What then?” he asked softly, so quietly it was barely audible. He shivered slightly, feeling chilled all of a sudden, and not in the pleasant way he felt when he was close to his dragon. This is why he wanted to just clam up, because now he was being needy and jealous and Gabriel was the one that was upset! Not him! He wanted to hit himself, to punch himself in the face; maybe he could knock some sense into himself. But he didn’t. He simply walked back over to Gabby and pulled him into a tight hug, hiding his face and not saying anything further.
