Canoake had enjoyed her first day of training. While she hadn't done great with disguises. Basically turning down her natural beauty and trying to be more plain, she had done much better than some of the others in the class. Like a blue rider by the name D'lek. She had secretly and not so secretly laughed at his attempts to become another person.
Now, taking a break and eating a small meal in the dining hall, she happened to spot the same blue rider from the earlier class. To say something, not to say something. What a choice to make... "Hello, feeling better now?"
Apparently, to say something.

D’lek was strolling through the dining hall, plate laden with meat rolls and mind reflecting on the morning’s training session. He had been utterly lost the entire time, mind wandering from one topic to another having grown bored with lessons in how to act like something he’d already been for turns-a dragonrider. At least I don’t have any distinguishing features to cover- how can women stand using cosmetics? The stuff looked terribly uncomfortable from what I saw today. Tennath replied with a mirthful tone, And you were terrible at trying to be someone you’re not, even without being there it was amusing.
He was brought back to the present by the question posed from the attractive greenrider that had fared far better than himself earlier today, if he recalled correctly she also found his attempts amusing. He flashed a smile and brought his plate over, sitting across from her-Canoake-that was her name. “I’m that obvious?” He regarded her now, in the modest hues and lack of adornment so contrary to her usual appearance around the Weyr. “Truth is that I've never been good at hiding who I am--used to get me into all sorts of predicaments.” Grinning, he proceeded to take a hearty chunk out of a meatroll.

Canoake looked pleased when the blue rider decided to join her table. While she had no problems hiding her ambition, she still loved attention and was a vain creature. So when he responded, she gave him a grin. "Not so much obvious as it was clear that maybe disguise isn't your strongest point. I think women sometimes have an advantage over men in that regards. We are used to hiding our looks, enhancing them, making ourselves something we aren't from time to time."
She bit into a buttered roll and enjoyed the taste. "I don't remember seeing you around Benden before the changes. I am Canoake, rider of green Tatath. I was born and raised here, impressed my lovely lady here as well."
Tatath noticed the blue with darker markings and sent him a thrum. Hello. You don't look familiar to me. My name is Tatath. Did you enjoy our riders' lessons as much as I did?

D’lek took the time to finish his mouthful to contemplate a response, “Yes I suppose so. You are maybe less notable, but I don't believe any less memorable, without the bright colors and all the adornment when I’ve usually seen you about.” He flashed her a smile and took a smaller bite, “I’m D’lek, rider of blue Tennath. I am rather looking forward to our next bout of training though, it’ll bring me back to our time down South.”
Tennath looked to the dark green and responded with an inquisitive hum. Tennath. I quite enjoyed it--although I wish I could have witnessed D’lek bumbling about trying to appear in someone else’s hide. Your hide is not the usual variety I’ve seen, there’s quite a contrast between the lights and darks. Is this a variation more common in the North?

She gave him another smile at the compliment. It was true, she enjoyed her flashy colors and her lovely trinkets but... "Hopefully, I won't be too memorable to those who used to reside in Benden. I would hate to do something drastic like cut my hair or try to dye it a duller shade."
From the south was he? Interesting. "And what brought you to the North? Why leave home for a strange place?"
Tatath blinked when Tennath commented on her hide. Looking at herself, she looked back over to him.

D’lek finished his bite of meat roll and replied, “No, I don’t think you’d be too recognizable unless you were speaking to someone face-to-face. Maybe I have an advantage in that regards, everyone at Trine is a perfect stranger for me.”
D’lek waved a hand and remarked nonchalantly, “Oh, one might say a change of pace.” Then laughed and teased with a grin, “You know I’d have to go North one way or another to be in this revolution, Malvern’s not exactly South either.”
Tennath thought for a moment. Perhaps I phrased that incorrectly, not so much the lights and darks--maybe more in the markings? I am just a transition from light to dark and dark to light- the dragons at Eastern don’t have the more complex hides I’ve seen here. I wonder if it’s in the Queens and bronzes? Tennath tilted his head and contemplated this absently.

She nodded and continued her meal. Nice not to have to worry about getting enough to eat. No overcrowding. "Sometimes, it feels like most of Benden fled in fear, afraid to embrace change." She shrugged, unwilling to completely voice her opinion. "I heard we may travel to Malvren soon. Though I can't be sure. I would like to visit the south, see the sights but Benden will always be my home."
I am not sure. I am not the only one here with a colorful hide. Maybe you need to meet more of us? Tatath responded.

D’lek felt a pang at the mention of “home”; it was never something he had experienced, a feeling of belonging, as so many described. Sure he felt he had his place in the Weyr, but had never truly belonged anywhere. He masked these thoughts though and simply nodded in affirmation, “Hmmm, I hope so. I want to see everything Pern has to offer.” His eyes took on a steely look as he added, “There’s so much potential stubbornly ignored, people wanting to hide what we could be-what we once were.” With a shake of his head he was back in the present, “I’m sure you’ll get to the South soon enough. At the present rate of my training I’m not even sure if I have what it takes to be an asset in Keller’s plans.”
Tennath regarded the green with one whirling blue eye, Perhaps you are right...do you know of any good places in the sun where I could keep a lookout? We have not spent much time outside of our weyr, but I do like to observe from my ledge. Maybe I can have Mine record what we see, he enjoys scribbling in his little books.

Ah ha! A like minded thinker. She appreciated that as well as the male company in front of her. Canoake nodded and listened to what he was saying behind what he was saying. "I plan on seeing Pern as soon as this nasty mess is over. It's a shame that it came to violence but what could they expect? Some of the best minds and most brilliant planners are on blues and greens... Why should we be limited because our dragons hides don't sparkle?"
She allowed herself to flush prettily, as if to seem embarrassed but proud of what she said. Canoake, such a good actress and player of emotions, but inside... Only Tatath truly made her happy. Continuing in a much more reserved voice. "I am sorry if my outburst startled you. And don't worry, I am sure you will progress just fine."
Tatath thought for moment. Always the lake. So many dragons out swimming and sunning. If you get out, you will see more.

D’lek appraised Canoake-she really was a beauty-and shrugged, “Startled, no.” Then he gave her a mischievous grin, “What’s life if you can’t laugh at yourself along the way? I’m not too worried about all this training, I take it as an opportunity to learn what I can. I'm not out to impress at this point.”
Tennath thought on her comment. Yes, that seems like a sensible place to start. He stood unceremoniously and shook out his wings - Mine, I am going to the lake now before you begin training again. Tennath was not one to waste time or words on pleasantries, but looking to Tatath he added, You can join me if you like.
