A small pile of fresh kill lay waiting with him, a large feathered hunter killed with a skillful blow was now a pile of feathers. His stomach growled, but the Kiokote ate not, for it was always his way to allow his lady first bite.

But the large bird grew cold as the sun spot crawled under the brush to sleep until morning. Another night had past and still his Lady Summer had yet to return. How many days had it been? Three? Four? Waltz watched as a rox slinked up tentatively before dragging the carcass into the bushed. He sighed softly and looked up at the moon, wondering where she had gone. It was very much like her to run off, her curious, Acha mind set had often sent her on little trips, and often bringing home a buck for him to meet.

But this time had been different somehow. Waltz had always been a patient heart, but something in her eyes had him looking up at ever twig snap. He was afraid for her and had no idea why.

Shadow lurked in from the under growth, pulling the partially eaten bird in her teeth. With a worried huff, she set it before her partner and nudged the wing towards his nose. In return, all she got was a half-smile and a turned cheek. With a sigh, the cheetah curled up close to Waltz, snuggling close to keep him warm, wishing the lady would return soon, for her master's sake.User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. And then somehow that voice, carried on the wind is gone, and suddenly the essence of what Tastes Like Summer is is gone as well: she (or what 'she' has become) is swept up on the wind and flung somewhere, somewhere unknown--

Until she wakes up with a huge breath in, surfacing from her dream the same way one might surface from being held underwater for a time. There is a searing pain in her eyes, and as she opens them, bits of dust and dried grass fall from her sockets, and Tastes Like Summer can look down at herself.

User ImageShe still wasn't sure if she was ready to face anykin, but it had been long enough; long enough spent sleeping, long enough spent walking around getting use to a new skin and new skins that lay in that half-asleep realm that mixed instinct and knowledge. Knowing what she was capable of was certainly different from the actual, conscious execution and so she left that to instinct while trying to memorize the steps. It takes her very little time to learn to control the ebb and flow of changing from one form to her other, until she can be kiokote, cheetah, and kiokote again from one step to the next; what is difficult about the endeavor is learning to feel comfortable.

So Starburst walked around for a long time, relearning the swamp, experiencing it anew in the form of a cheetah. She learned the supple lines of her back and tail and the way the squishy swamp floor feels underneath soft, silent paws. And she runs. She does a lot of running, both as a cheetah and a kiokote, reveling in her new found speed that is much quicker than she had ever seen anykin run.

It is while running as a kiokote, leaping impossible distances over roots and underbrush, that she finds a companion, or rather a companion finds her. Cheetahs are generally aloof, but this one sought her out and ran with her, matching the thundering of her hooves with the torrent of his paws. And they ran as the sun walked its journey across the sky. They spent their first night together as cheetahs, high up in a mangrove tree where they can lounge comfortable as companions. She names him after the sun they chased, Leading Light.

And now it was much later, days even. Starburst knew that she was as ready as she ever would be to face Waltz transformed. She lead the way with Sun following her companionably close. They walked silently as cheetahs over roots and brush towards the place where Starburst had been inexplicably drawn away from, though now she knows it had been the MotherFather calling her to a different place in her dreams. When they came upon them, Waltz and Shadow, they are far enough away that she can only smell them. She stopped but Sun continued on, probably drawn by the scent of new friends that his master had undoubtedly been leading them towards. And so, the first form to break out of the brush is one like a summer sky only broken by the the barest wisps of clouds. Immediately, he goes forward to sniff at his fellow cheetah, cautious but friendly.

It is a long, long drawn out moment until the brush breaks again to reveal another cheetah. This on with strokes of summer, but mostly is soft clouds. Starburst stands gingerly on her paws, not approaching, almost shy as if she were not a different kin than the one who had experienced love for the first time with a buck that tended his garden with such affection and care. She shifts minutely, but is otherwise still as she watches Sun greet Shadow.

But that breeze brought something else to Shadow; the scent of someone familiar and the sound of silent paws. She stood and stepped forward, on guard and ready to defend her master if the need arouse. Moments later, a cheetah stepped through baring marks of the biggest blue skies. Her head lifted and she eyed him questioningly. Friend or foe? It was before she could answer that question that the reeds parted way for another, special cheetah.

Waltz lifted his head at the first cat's arrival, puzzled as to its intentions. The speedy cats were often too proud to scavenge for putrid kills and this one didn't seem interested in the food anyway. But that confusion was nothing compared to what he felt when the cheetahess made her quiet entrance. Standing, he stared at the beautiful cat in awe.

She appeared to have just burst through the blanket of clouds that covered the sky on a summer day. The most wonderful blue, peeking out from under wisps of soft cloud and gazing at him with eyes that held the intensity of the sun. He caught her scent then too, the way the air tasted of summer rain after a day-light shower. His heart ached in his chest and, suddenly, tears stung his eyes. He missed her with every ounce of his being, he did. And this cheetah, baring such striking resemblance, he could almost see her standing there, smiling that smile that she only gave him, despite the bucks that smiled at her.

Without a thought, the buck lowered himself, sinking into a deep bow not unlike as he had done when he had first met his beloved, his mind full to bursting with memories of them together.

Shadow felt her master's anguish and turned back to the female, suddenly, she knew. He master did not, but she did. How she knew, who knows, but Follow My Lead stepped quickly to the she-cat, swallowing down her master's feelings which were so strong that they reflected through her, and pressed her head into the nape of the other cat's neck, mewling a pleading sob.
