Spring in Destiny City absolutely one thing to Sekani Fitzmartin - LACROSSE SEASON! The snow melting and the city thawing out its pipes was only a pleasant accompaniment, because he would have played their first game two feet under a snow bank if it came to it. He'd practiced like that once, when the indoor arena wasn't available for the team. Tiny nets knew no weather. As it was, the days were just beginning to be uncomfortably warm at their peaks, while the cool breeze still broke up the heat in the hours surrounding.

He was savoring that very breeze in the late afternoon hours as he waved off his teammates. No doubt, he stunk to high-heaven and his torn and pre-stained "white" practice shirt and black shorts would need a wash cycle of their own. So much bleach. Team practice was officially over, but the blunette still had energy to burn and stayed behind. No sense in wasting a perfectly good free field! Those around him in the public park were occupied to varying degrees, one packed full of some junior sports division. He could tell from the equal amounts of adults and children screaming / squealing and the tight barrier of camcorders.

Hopefully it was at least something that required padding, ugh. Kids were adorable when they got all scrappy, but parents hardly let them get a bump these days.

Sekani began his solo session with some sprints while cradling the solid rubber lacrosse ball in its net. At least, when it wasn't escaping. (That's what practice is for!) Some dodges were tossed in when he felt like it. Thier solo catch practice board was beckoning, though...

On a soccer field not too far away, Krishna Dhawan dribbled a ball. His team had abruptly cancelled their biweekly practice due to the captain's wife going into labor. A completely understandable reason, but given Gwen's own recent hiatus due to her mother's new child... the florist was quite tired of birth at the moment. And the idea of children in general.

For this reason, he abandoned his normal practice field when he found it too close to a junior league game. The rainbow-haired man had no desire to listen to their cries or the yellings of overenthusastic parents. He had thought about returning to the flower shop, but Krishna craved the exertion. Plus, he had already arranged for the shop to be taken care of, and driven all the way out here.

But with a new field came new challenges. He may have known his home turf like the back of a calloused hand, but this new field was in far worse condition. A misplaced step into an unseen divet made him stumble. His aimed kick still connected with the ball--but it sent the object flying towards a teal-haired lacrosse player!

Once Krishna looked up to follow the path of his ball, his gaze became markedly interested. The 'victim' of the oncoming object was immediately attractive, certainly. Of more interest to him, however, were the more subtle details. Swirls of black ink around the younger man's wrist tantalized him, particularly since the same markings appeared further up his arm. Those additional marks flitted in and out of vision as the dirty, white t-shirt shifted. How large was the tattoo? Why that particular pattern? ... did he have any others?

Krishna would have preferred to simply observe his fellow athelete in action and try to use his eyes to answer these questions... but he had come with purpose. He jogged over to the lacrosse player and spoke first, simple words though they may have been, "My ball?"

Suddenly, Sekani was having a difficult time practicing lacrosse. Probably because his ball was now a soccer ball. On top of that, the resounding thud it had produced a moment earlier, not much worse off due to the short grass, had nearly scared him to death. Thinking about the trajectory, the lacrosse ball was either under / in a tree or had possibly just clocked a 10 year old in the junior league team playing nearby. If it was one of the kids that was able to send this soccer ball this far, then maybe he should just sneak away quietly now.

Just as Sekani was figuring out how best to use a lacrosse stick to protect himself, the real answer came trotting up from another field. It was a unique sight, even for the diverse Destiny City: naturally tanned, the Indian or Middle Eastern sort, and dark-rainbow hair. At the stranger's question, Sekani scooped up the ball with his crosse to present it at arm's length.

"That would explain why it does doesn't fit in the net," he said with a smirk. "You new here? My team and I practice a lot, but we don't see a lot of soccer blokes older than yea high," with 'yea high' coming to about his midsection.

"I am not new; my field is merely overrun with urchins." The soccer player indicated the distant field with a wave of his hand. Judging from the looks of the situation, it was half-time. He merely hoped the parents had enough sense to clean up all the water bottles and discarded orange peels. It was not his job to clean the park, but Krishna greatly disliked seeing a mess where one should not be. It showed a basic lack of respect for the others who used the space. "You?"

As he moved over, Krishna knew this encounter could be short. It would take no time at all to retrieve his soccer ball from the offered contraption in the other athelete's hand. Normally, he would do so and go right back to practice. He would have his ball; why talk more? Why interact with someone more than necessary? Yet, he found himself tipping the crosse down in a purposeful way as he retrieved his ball. It allowed him the excuse of 'falling' to steady himself by gripping the younger man's arm.

The ball tipped out of the tiny net and rolled to Krishna's feet due to this action. The soccer player offered a small, quick smile of his own as though in apology for the slight.

"Whoa, watch out now!" Sekani leaned into the outstretched hand, blithely helping to catch the fellow athlete without another thought. The smile, to him, was simply that - though, a rather nice one. It fit on the man's face a little crooked, like it didn't really know how to be there, but nice. He returned the favor in kind, flashing a friendly, wide smile as he made sure the other guy had properly steadied himself.

"One of the newbies may have gotten a little excited with their crosse today," he said, thinking that there may have been a divot, however uncommon that was for a lacrosse game. Or this guy was drunk. But, Sekani had never seen such a somber drunk, so a win either way! "We're out here a lot for DCU lacrosse practice this time of year. I stayed behind for some extra rounds," he continued, scooping up the soccer ball with the crosse again, this time bumping it right against a free tan hand. "But I wasn't as lucky to keep an eye on my ball."

The strong muscles beneath his hand and the warm, wide smile that was given to him pleased Krishna. Both were simple, honest and... warm. He broke the contact before it became anything weird for either of them. He listened to the information given to him. DCU... his would-be Alma Mater. Also indicative that the other man was, indeed, a man and not a teenager.

The touch of cold rubber against his hand made him take the ball and tuck it under one arm. Again, he had a perfect opportunity to leave, but he heard himself offering, "I will help look?"

"I'm Krishna." It was thrown in, almost as an after thought, but that he would offer it at all was a clear indication that the rainbow-haired man felt his new acquaintance was worthy of his time. And--although he would never admit it aloud--that he wished to spend more of it with the lacrosse player.

"Sekani," he replied, pulling the crosse back to rest the weight in the crook of his arm. It nestled there naturally after so many years. "Thanks, I appreciate the help. Since I wasn't assaulted by a band of urchins because I knocked one in the head at terminal velocity, I believe it went over by the trees." His thumb jerked up to indicate a small plot at the corner of their field, where a band of popcorn trees had claimed territory, choosing to inconspicuously leave out exactly why it had taken up camping at this point in time. He began walking towards them with a easy stride. "It's a kinda small white thing, if you haven't seen one before."

Scoring help for these kinds of annoying tasks - especially when they were mostly this guy's fault, anyway - wasn't a new exercise, either. He had been practicing it almost as long as lacrosse. This time, though, it could have been for the company.

Had to look me up a popcorn tree and a lacrosse ball. xD

Sekani. An interesting name to top off all of the other interesting features. This more active form of people watching was more stressful due to the need for conversation... but the florist could not argue with the results. His observations got more personal, this way, beyond a mere collection of facts.

"The trees are filled with 'small white things,'" Krishna pointed out with a small snort. He had never seen a lacrosse ball, but surely it would stand out. Or his vivacious companion would spot it and then he would retrieve it. He reached to pluck a piece of 'popcorn' from the other man's hair before moving away. "I will search the left."

It took Sekani a moment to catch Krishna's meaning about the many 'small white things.' When the realization finally dawned on him, the other guy was already on his way up a tree.

"Touche," he laughed at his own in-eloquence. "Ball-shaped white thing, bigger than a golf ball," Sekani rephrased, really thinking on a better way to describe the lacrosse ball than 'a thing like a thing with a thing.' He looked up to the blooming white kernels from which the tree got its name and thanked any high holy being that it was at least that big. He and Krishna would likely be picking the tree bits out of everywhere in a minute. Grappling with the right tree's jagged bark, the bluenette got an arm out to the first low-lying branch.

"If we don't find it soon," Sekani called out to Krishna, "we can call it a day. Sun's setting." The little league game had just let out with a wave of squealing, as the reddening sun touched the horizon.

Climbing was not one of Krishna's best skills. Attempting to climb in cleats meant for keeping him positioned on the ground was not making it any easier. The spikes slid against the bark of the wood, but the florist forced himself to continue. He could not give up at this point. Neither his pride nor his vanity would allow it. Against the orange backgrop of the setting sun, he peered through the trees in search of the object Sekani described.

It took a few minutes, but eventually he craned himself forward. Could it be? It was the right size and shape and color. "I see it." Krishna called over to his new companion. He pointed over to the tree Sekani currently climbed, where the ball had become wedged in the nook of two branches. The ball was higher than he suspected the smaller man could reach. He hopped down from his spot, his cleated feet sinking slightly into the grass before he straightened up. "Need a hand?"

Sekani was having a better time at climbing his tree than his new assistant, in some part due to him abandoning all of his foot-gear in favor of bare-footing it up the weaving tree limbs. He was squinting against the sky - neon fading into dark blue did not make for good reading - when the clarion call came from the other tree. Following Krishna's finger, he saw where it had become stuck.

"Yeah, that's it!" Excitedly, Sekani pulled up a few more branches and stretched towards the ball-shaped goal. This type of tree was a curse and a blessing: while you couldn't climb straight up, there was the possibility of actually retrieving your item if it was away from the trunk. Possibility.

"Looks like it," he said in response to the offer of help. It was a good hand length away, at least, and Krishna was taller than him. "Hold on, I'll help you up." Sekani scampered down the tree - quite a bit faster with gravity working with him - to offer a hand-up.

The soccer player watched the bluenette scurry about the branches with no small amount of appreciation. He was clearly skilled and possessing of an odd sort of grace... not that he would ever say such a thing out loud. As it was, he was simply grateful that the illusive ball had been located.

Krishna accepted the hand up gratefully, impressed with the amount of strength he felt there. He could think of far worse ways of spending his time then with an attractive young man with warm hands... even if it did require climbing trees as well. He positioned himself as best he could on the branches under Sekani, steading his footing. Only then did he offer the promised boost, stretching up. "If you stand on my shoulders... you can reach?"

"I appreciate the enthusiasm," Sekani laughed from his branch, "but we probably shouldn't try any acrobatics in the tree." Oh, soccer players. He slipped over to another jutting trunk to clear the best path for Krishna's ascent. Sekani's feet had turned black with tree-dirt and grime, but were nicely calloused enough to keep the sharper bits of bark from causing real damage. "It was just a little out of my reach, anyway, so you can probably reach it."

Sekani found himself smiling about the whole affair, as strange and sorta awkward as it was. The usual lacrosse practice had taken quite a turn, landing him up a tree with some guy named Krishna at sundown. It would make a great bar story if he didn't break his neck or get shanked.

"As you wish." Denied the opportunity to show off, Krishna proceed to climb the path Sekani abandoned in silence. He tossed his hair to keep it out of his face but climed with an increasing amount of confidence. He had survived one popcorn tree, afterall, and the path he currently took had been manned before. What had he to fear?

As suspected, his additional height enabled him to reach the ball. An unexpected complication, however, was his cleats. They continued to make his stance unsteady. But he had come too far to stop now... particularly when a grimey-footed lacrosse player was looking for his assistance. The florist stretched out and grabbed the ball.

The good news was that the lacross ball was saved! It plunked safely down to the waiting grass, free from its bark prison. The bad news was that Krishna lost his footing. He was able to catch himself on the branch, but like a fish on a hook, he dangled. Dangling was not dignified and not likely to earn him the gratitude and respect he sought from the bluenette who so expertly climbed trees. Not to mention that if he fell from this height, he was likely to sprain an ankle or crack his head open on the unforgiving ground. With these thoughts in mind, Krishna began to struggle to pull himself up.

Bits of concern began nagging away at the back of Sekani's mind when he noticed the unsteadiness in his taller companion. Those cleats wouldn't have done Sekani any favors, but maybe they were working for this guy, who appeared rather strong and confident and chivalrous and all of that other positive s**t they wrote about knights in that one English course he had to take. Thus, he paid the wobble little mind -- instead, he celebrated when the lacrosse ball flew free.

"All right, Krish--!"

A celebration cut short as Krishna slipped from the branch entirely, the ball forgotten for now. Sekani's breath caught in his throat, only struggling its way free when it appeared the other man would not be hurtling to the ground immediately. He was at the branch in a flash, his hand darting out to grab Krishna's arm. They were pretty high up!

"Hang on, let's just get you back up here..." he said, smiling through the strain.
