Threadfall contest: Wherholder greens take wing!

As wherhold riders of Benden and Malvren rise up to defend their hard won territories there are some amongst them whose tales have yet to be told.

Will you be on of the ones to share their stories with the world?

#1 #2 #3

Would you like to win one of these lovely ladies? It’s simple! All you have to do is post with a hypothetical wingrider green with stats average/average in the upcoming Threadfall! From amongst those who take part three winners will be selected, and they will become the owners of these three greens. Winners will then need to post their characters for approval as normal.

EDITED IN: The winning three dragons will be counted as having one threadfall (this one) already under their belts once approved; one step closer to gaining prestige ranks!

Choice order will be raffled off. First pick will be raffled between those who have zero adult dragons, second between those who have zero adult wherhold dragons, and third will be open to all who enter. If fewer than two people without adult wherhold dragons/adult dragon at all enter the number of newbie only dragons will of course be reduced.

Those who are judged to have made a special effort to portray their character during the fall (this does not mean post spam! Please do not double post with burn posts!) may be granted extra tickets at the discretion of the staff.

Staff members other than TawnyAngel may enter for these greens if they wish, but even if they have zero adult wherhold dragons they can only win from the 'general' draw.

For those unfamiliar with the system an average/average green dragon has: HP 35, Agility +2

This means that they can take 35 points of damage before they have to retreat to rest but that every time they are damaged they take two fewer points of damage than the damage dice shows, which can reduce damage taken to zero.

In order to fight the Thread with your green you will roll 2d10 to make a ‘burn post’.

First Dice = Amount of Thread Burned. Subtract this from the running total of Thread, and edit your post to reflect the new amount of thread remaining.

Second Dice = Chance of threadscore (1-5 = scored; 6-10 = dodged). If you roll 1-5 you need to make a ‘damage post’. Roll 1d10 to see how much damage you take. As your green has +2 agility subtract 2 from whatever you roll, and edit your post to show your dragon’s new HP.

For a fuller example of a threadfall and stats see here.

You can jump in at any time! You don't have to be there right at the start to be in with a chance!

Wave incoming!

Wave 1: 80/80 Thread remains!

All adult wherhold dragons may fly this Fall!

Wingleaders and seconds are NPCs during this Fall. Please assume they are competent and commanding their followers well.

You have until Mon 6th May 11:59PST to burn down all waves of the Thread or there will be consequences!

It was just after dawn when the alarm bells rang.

Forewarned by Starcrafters, Malvren Weyr currently hosted dragons from Benden as well as those who permanently resided within the marble halls. The wherholders might boast fewer large dragons and indeed fewer dragons over all than those who had resisted their revolution but they were no less fierce, no less trained and no less stalwart than their counterparts in Trine and the other Weyrs of Pern.

Under the command of leaders who had proven themselves to Keller three wings took to the skies, their hides gleaming and their eyes blazing bright with battle-light that seemed to reflect the rising sun itself. Everything they had would be risked, every ounce of their strength given to the effort, and the world would see how dragons and riders given equal treatment but kept from delusions of grandeur could fight.

Acriculeth and A'nos
Agility: -2
HP: 58/58

--------------------

A'nos nodded and lent low over his dragon's neck. Fighting Thread was far from his favourite activity but there was little choice in the matter. Those who did not serve did not gain favour, in fact they gained rather potent disfavour and that was the last thing he needed.

Bugling his challenge to the tumbling silver filaments the sleek bronze surged forward and burned a great swathe out of the sky.

Damage: 5 + 2 = 7
Agility: -2
HP: 51/58

--------------------

In their eagerness however Acirculeth was no as cautious as he might have been, and a tendril of Thread that escaped his fire tangled about his right foreleg. Bellowing in rage and pain the bronze jumped between to destroy it, soon reappearing in formation with his wing. That had not gone quite as planned but at least they had seared away a good amount of Thread for their trouble.

Ja'kki and Emerath // Burn Post

Emerath trilled nervously as she followed her wing into the sky. Oh she was always nervous at the beginning of a Fall! Would she fly ok? Would she get hurt? Would Ja'kki? What if she accidentally flamed another dragon? What if she ran out of stone?! Yellow clouded her eyes.

We've done this before we'll do it again Emerath! You're the quickest flyer in this Weyr! Ja'kki radiated encouragement and anticipation, her whole being thirsting for action as she fed large chunks of stone to Emerath.

They went Between. When they came out the leading edge was upon them and Emerath let loose with her flame.

Ja'kki and Emerath // Damage Post

Despite the green's worries, Ja'kki was right. As Emerath's flame died a small patch of Thread headed straight towards them. Her quick reflexes saved them from harm as she tucked her wings in and rolled in the air, just barely missing the patch.

Ja'kki let out a whoop of excitement as they came upright and rejoined the wing's formation.

E'lov and Blue Magith / Burn Post
HP: 37
Agility: +2

E'lov did one last check of the straps, and then chugged down the rest of his klah, setting the mug down on the ground. He'd fetch it after threadfall. "You ready?"

I do not like this.

"I know." Oh, how he knew. The blue was not quiet about his feelings about threadfall, and his place in it, but it was something they had to do. "Part of the job though."

Unfortunately.

E'lov fed him the first batch of firestone, climbing aboard and fastening the straps around him. He didn't want to fall off, not during his first threadfall. He wanted to impress, to show of their skills, to prove that Magith was the best.

We do not need to prove that. I am the best, and they will learn that soon enough.

"Yes, they will." There was little E'lov could say to that, the blue's confidence was overwhelming, and he saw no reason to change that. It was just part of what made Magith, Magith.

The blue took off into the sky, taking his place in the wing that he had been assigned to. He would fly well, and flame strong, because he had to. There was no room for the weak, and even if this wasn't his strong suit, he would still do his best. Let us flame!

E'lov and Blue Magith / Damage Post
Damage: 1 - 2 = -1 (No damage taken)
Agility: +2
HP: 37/37

Thread was slightly more chaotic falling than either of the pair had expected it to, and as Magith moved from one patch to the next, he almost turned directly into a falling piece of thread. Luckily he was able to flit between before it had a chance to strike him, but that didn't mean that he wasn't going to be so lucky the next time.

That was close. I must remain more vigilant.

We can do this. E'lov responded, reassuringly. I will watch as well.

Ralla and Firith
HP: 43
Agility: +5
Burn:+2

You have checked them once already, Firith snapped at her rider when Ralla went to re-check their riding straps. The green bristled with impatience, lashing her tail as her eyes whirled red and yellow. Let's go! This would be their first Fall, and a further chance to distinguish themselves. The pair had already proved themselves in battle, but Thread was a new challenge that they were eager to meet.

Alright, we're going! Ralla scrambled up and fastened the straps before slapping her dragon on the shoulder. Firith responded with a snort and bounded into the air, quick to take her place among the others.

And just as quick to begin flaming. They'd get this done!

V’ell and Zarth // Burn Post

Thread falls, V’ell. We are called to battle!

Zarth was singing with eagerness to fight, her wings shivering as she bugled to the sky. Delicate as the slender green might have been, she was hardly one to back down from fighting the dragons’ ancient enemy.

“All right. Straps checked, firestone loaded, we’re ready.” V’ell swung into place on her dragon’s back, buckled herself into the riding straps, then laid herself flat against Zarth’s neck to reduce drag. The two of them launched themselves into the sky, spiraling eagerly upward after the rest of their wing.

Zarth took a deep breath, betweened herself right up to the leading edge, and then exhaled a great gout of flame right at the silver filaments.

Ralla and Firith
Damage: 7-5=2
HP: 41/43
Agility: +5

As overeager and determined to burn Thread as she was, Firith was perhaps a little lax in making sure she dodged Thread as well - not that she would admit it, that strand really just came out of nowhere! The light scoring elicited no more than a hiss from the tough little green before she popped between and back.

Bolstered by her near miss with Thread, Emerath dove towards the next patch with more vigor. She was small. She was quick! She would protect her home and her sisters in the air! To The Bolts Emerath bugled excitement and encouragement.

E'lov and Magith
HP: 37
Agility: +2

There were mostly greens in their field of vision, and Magith fit right in with them size wise. It was kind of interesting, giving him and his dragon ideas, but the pair of them knew they needed to concentrate on thread. They had almost been scored once already.

Above us! E'lov shouted, and Magith jumped back, avoiding a patch that would have landed on top of them otherwise. He flamed it, burning it to ash, before moving on to his next target.

HP: 57
Agility: +1

C'mon, Ive, let's get ourselves up there!

Yes, Mine! Ivanhoth responded, and once His was situated properly and securely, used his well-muscled hindquarters to launch himself into the air. Eagerness to do his duty, to protect their home and his little cousins who could not fly and fight Thread, drove him to join his fellow dragons. He did not enjoy fighting and flaming, and worried so about his rider coming to harm, but he would not let that stop him from doing what he had been born to do.

He gave a short bugle to help boost his own confidence, then set to work.

Even before the flame had fully died away, Zarth was twisting away effortlessly, folding her wings and diving after another tangle of Thread filaments.
