Witty Punching Bag

PostPosted: Sat May 04, 2013 7:50 am

Quan was not so much mysterious as he was strange. The very essence of the word leaked out from every pore on his body, Ainsley was almost sure of that much at least. The young Orderite followed his mentor in silence, tired from the various "evaluation tasks" he'd been told to do to see exactly where he was in terms of physical strength, agility, etc. The boy had an inkling of what Quan had in store for him that day before going to sleep the night before, and woke up extra early that morning just to catch the man off guard.

"Wise-cracking jack just wants to go shopping today..." he mumbled as they went, shoving his hands in his pockets. He looked like a little kid whose father just scolded him for doing something wrong, pouty and whatnot. Quan only raised a brow at his protege's words, not letting the poor young Orderite know that he'd heard the little comment at all. Instead, he came to a halt in front of a particular shop that had set up shop in Serenia that day. The Dovaa who manned the stall was busy tending to another customer at present, so Quan nudged Ainsley a bit on the head.

"Boy, now this is a place you'll grow familiar with the older you get," the traveler said with a grin. "'Peddler's Rock,' it's called. Remember that, and remember the Dovaa that owns it. He carries just about everything you'll ever need, and probably more if you catch him at the right times." Quan seemed to cut off the would-be lecture there as the Dovaa facilitated a transaction and waved off the other customer, then approached them.

"Good afternoon, Arick," Quan greeted, a smidge of familiarity mixed in with the formal greeting. He quickly changed the subject and referred to Ainsley, though. "My young protégé here is interested in buying a certain something to help him with his alchemy studies. Ainsley?" Ainsley, however, had turned his attention elsewhere while the two older gentlemen talked, and completely missed his mentor's introduction. Quan quickly glared at the back of the blonde's head and, within seconds, Ainsley felt the older Orderite's closed fist fall rather heavily on his head.

"Pay attention," he chided, then dragged him back to where Arick was standing. "Now, as I was saying, you were looking to buy some things for your alchemy studies. Go on..."

Ainsley glared upward at his mentor, his fiery red eyes glowing every so subtly with irritation. He was already planning how he could get back at the man for it while rubbing his now throbbing head. "Uh, there was mention of a cauldron and vials of water needed in order to make the most basic of mixtures..." he stated, recalling his studies through the headache was slowly starting to develop. He needed an ice pack.

"Have a great day and as always, thank you for choosing Peddler's Rock!" the large Dovaa called to the fleeing customer. He turned to view Quan, an old acquaintance of his.

"It's very nice to see you again, Quan. I hope all has been well since our last meeting." he began with a large smile upon his face.

A chuckle emitted from his lips as he watched the scene play out before him. Arick nodded as the man spoke of alchemy supplies, yes, of course he did have those things.

"Yes, I do have many cauldrons and a nice supply of water. It's important to keep these things stocked up. Do you have the recipes in order to make such mixtures? You can't be without a good recipe book!" he said, walking over to a small rock stall and pulling out a cauldron and a dark wooden case, setting them both atop the counter.

"This is the cauldron, and here's a case of vials with water. How many did you need, son?" he asked curiously. He definitely wanted to make sure the boy knew what he was getting himself into. Another alchemist in the world is just what it needed. Maybe one day this boy could meet with Apicius, the Master Alchemist, and get some good tips on how to craft these potions even better. Oh how he longed for that woman.

Drifting back from his inner thoughts, he shook his head and awaited the boys response.

Witty Punching Bag

Quan had essentially stepped into the background and let Ainsley take the floor, while Ainsley stared at the cauldron and vials curiously. It was a different thing, to read about it and actually see it with your own eyes. Sure, a cauldron and vials of water weren't the most exciting of things to buy, certainly not if they were next to other rare weapons and potions and talismans, but Ainsley could still appreciate the fact that without these two basic items, alchemy would be an impossibility.

"It's.. well, it's basically exactly how I pictured it would look," he said with a bit of amusement. "But a lot better than just a description and sketch in a book." The boy gave a simple nod, then turned to Quan when the question of how many came up. The man, however, had turned his attention elsewhere, now beginning to peruse the collection of potions and other things in one corner of the shop. Ainsley huffed at the sight, then turned back to Arick.

"I think I'll take the cauldron and twenty of the vials," he said, almost irritably, then jabbed his thumb in Quan's direction. "My 'mentor' is paying."

The Gaili Dovaa chuckled. This kid knew exactly what he wanted. Quite a smart little guy, the Dovaa continued to think as he just nodded his head in agreement. The boy had a point, seeing the item in real life was definitely much better than anything anyone could come up with in a book. It was always pleasing to see the real item in front of you. Getting hands on training is how Arick learned how to craft and do the things he did. He wasn't one for studying a book, being cooped up all day inside reading. He had to get out and experience it first hand, which is one reason he decided to become a traveling salesman, to be able to walk the world and learn as many new things as he possibly could.

Being brought back into reality, he began to speak. "Ah, yes, alright. The cauldron and twenty vials. Sounds good. Don't forget, you may need some recipes at some point and all of the ingredients to become a true alchemist. One day you may even run into Master Alchemist Apicius, one of the best alchemists, if not THE best, in the world. She will be able to give you tips and tricks on how to better your potions, I'm sure." he said with a smile.

Whenever someone bought alchemy supplies from him; he liked to point out Apicius as a teacher of sorts, just in case they ever needed more advice than a book could give. "You could also join the College of Aptitude to help you on your journey to become a great alchemist." he said with a smile.

He then turned to Quan and nodded, awaiting his final payment to conclude the transaction.

Witty Punching Bag

The idea of college kind of bored him, but he didn't comment and simply nodded at Arick's suggestion. Meeting with a Master Alchemist, however, sounded a bit more interesting. The boy thought to bring it up as soon as he and Quan were back at their camp. For now, though, he quickly excused himself and approached his mentor, brutally punching him in the side of his leg to catch his attention. Which it did, and elicited a relatively loud howl of pain in the process.

"Payment," the boy pointed out while slowly moving back to Arick. "Sorry about that," Ainsley said, then looked over his shoulder to make sure Quan was back on his way.

"Fiesty little bugger," he said with a laugh as he quickly assessed the purchase and offered up their payment. "Punching me in the side. If he was a bit bigger I'd give 'im a run for his money." After another laugh, he grabbed the cauldron and left the vials for Ainsley to carry. "Thanks again Arick. I expect I'll be seeing you when he's ready to buy a recipe or two."

And with that, the two left the shop and headed back home. Ainsley was lugging a deceitfully heavy bag of vials while Quan was happily whistling a tune and easily carrying the cauldron on his shoulders. With narrowed eyes, Ainsley was quickly thinking up a way to get back at his mentor. Probably before dinner.. probably...
