Flush with her victory, Eanah wasted no time heading back out onto the sands. Unfortunately, she did so alone. Early the next morning, before her companions had awakened, the Adept quietly crept out of the tent and away from the protection of their hiding spot. She'd brought a long-bladed knife on this journey in addition to her usual provisions. She chose not to dwell on the fact that Anat had never drilled her with blades. She didn't even know how to hold one properly.
It was rather easy to find dragons this early in the day. There were only a couple of places nearby where they basked, and that was usually all they seemed interested in doing in the hours after sunrise. All she would have to do would be to choose a suitable location where she couldn't be chased and pick one off before it could react.
She took her time finding a Kiandri to engage, tentatively drawing together the strands of power necessary to knit flesh and bone, then dropping them and repeating the exercise. Hopefully she wouldn't need such spells today. The dragon she finally chose was larger than yesterday's specimen, but that was hardly an issue. It sat alone, situated perfectly under the short outcropping where Eanah now stood.
The sandy little cliff ledge had appeared sturdy enough from the ground, but as she shifted her weight, she found that her assessment of its strength had been woefully inaccurate. Eanah crouched, putting her scepter's safety above her own as she tossed it lightly behind her and back onto firmer ground. Only then did she turn to make her escape, but she was far too late.
As she fell through the air toward the sands below, Eanah heard a long, high-pitched screech from far away and a familiar voice shouting her name. They were the last things she heard for quite some time.
