Well, my parents named me Cassandra Alathei, but I prefer to be called Cassie
The stars tell me eighteen years have passed since my first breaths.
It's not really that interesting, but...
Cassie's parents always warned her about the surface dwellers, especially the ones referred to as fishermen, and about the dangers of swimming to near to their boats or the shore. They were horrible, greedy creatures, willing to sell even their own kin for some thin, green wood which they called money. Needless to say, the stories frightened her greatly as a young mermaid. As she grew older, however, Cassie became less afraid and more curious about the two legged people. She would observe them from far away and, while some did seem very much like the humans in her parents' tales, many appeared to be kind. However, many of those that she saw were young children, fathers, mothers; families that had come to the beach for a vacation.
It was during one of these outings of hers that the female was caught. She should have left sooner, but Cassie had been so absorbed in watching those strange two-leggers that she didn't pay attention to her instincts. The storm hit swift and hard. The darkened sky boomed with thunder while lightning streaked across it to provide glimpses of her surroundings. The waves roared with all the ferocity of an attacking lioness. She dove as quickly and deeply as she could to hide from the pelting rain and frightening sounds. The young mermaid had not been fast enough though. Before she could get very far from the raging surface the waves threw her against a boat which hadn't had the time to get back to shore. The force of the impact dazed her momentarily, and she became caught in the fishing net which the crew had forgotten to draw up in the madness of keeping their craft afloat.
Quick as it had arrived the storm disappeared, a truly curious bout of weather. Cassie couldn't think about that at the moment though, she needed to get free before the fishermen found her...but it was already too late. The small crew had decided to head for shore, not wanting to get caught in another sudden storm. They had done pretty well, all things considered. The crew was almost entirely new but they had managed to keep the ship from capsizing. One man went to haul the net up but found it too heavy and called for help. Imagine their surprise when they found such a stunning creature had become ensnared in their trap. Surely she could be sold for a hefty price, and one of the five even knew some magic...enough to make it so that her tail would turn into a pair of legs when the scales began to dry, at least that's what she believed... It took several days but after much practice she had learned how to walk without falling.
Soon as they could, the fishermen auctioned Cassie off to the highest bidder. They used the slave market, of course. After all there were many who were willing to pay well for unique creatures, and one that hadn't even been owned yet? Well, that just added to her value. The first person who bought her had done so to use the mermaid as a gift, something to please those in higher standing than himself and better his own position. The man whom Cassie had been gifted to was known to be kind and generous to his friends. She quickly found out this was not the case when he was contained in the privacy of his own home.
The man was a beast, torturing his servants over the smallest mistakes and using them however he pleased. They were his 'possessions' after all. None dared to speak a word against him for fear of what action their Master would take. Cassie was scared at first too, but slowly she built up courage. The young mermaid was determined not to live like this. She watched and waited, made the man trust her, and then, when the opportunity presented itself, she fled. Cassie ran as far as her legs would take her, she even tried to return home. Her hopes of returning were quickly destroyed when a sharp pain tore through her body and a strange mark appeared on her shoulder.
Rather than despair over this, Cassie searched for any clue as to the mark on her right shoulder. As it turns out, her first Master had had a spell cast upon her. Unless the mermaid is with her Master she may not go more than thirty feet away from dry land. However, if her Master accompanies her Cassie is permitted to go as far as they allow. There was no way she would return to her old Master though, so the female set off to find a new one, one who would be kind to her. It was during her search that she ran into one of the Head-Mistresses and was invited to Trinity Castle. Where better to look than a home specifically for such people?
I'm not a bad girl, promise!
Cassie is kind, loving and loyal to those close to her, to anyone else...well, it could go either way. Despite her past this young mermaid is not afraid of humans, rather than fear them she decided to become stronger and more knowledgeable of this new world. She is by no means a pushover but will, more often than not, do what is asked of her if it is requested in a kind manner. Else she is most likely to be stubborn and rebellious.
