Pale Moonlight had always enjoyed writing projects at school. While he did greatly prefer music, a taste for the written word was genetic- and so he found himself warming to what would have been otherwise a rather awkward assignment. The foals in his class had been assigned interviews- they had to go out into Phonyland and talk to adults who had their cutie marks and were settled in their careers. Then they would do presentations about their subject to the class and tell them about that phony's life. It was a way to learn how to write biographies and a way to find out about different talents and jobs one could hold. When the assignment was announced, he'd planned on interviewing one of his mothers, or perhaps his grandmere, but to his initial chagrin, it turned out that each foal was drawing a name of volunteers out of a hat. If they got a relative, they had to put the name back. He'd drawn a tattoo artist, which was something he knew very little about- so at least it would be educational.
As it turned out, the first round of the interview had gone really, really well- he'd been lucky in that the adult he'd been assigned to talk to, Imperial Ink, was very understanding and patient- and funny, too!
But when he'd given his practice presentation to the class, nobody got any of the jokes he'd tried to tell. Everybody had just stared until he cleared his throat and moved on. He wasn't too upset- it was just a practice presentation, after all- but he didn't understand why the jokes had gone over so poorly.
Maybe he'd ask Imperial Ink about it in the course of this interview. But for now, he needed to stick to the list of questions he'd drawn up.
"Thank you again for your time, Mr. Ink," he said. "Um. Last week, you'd told me about your job. Do you think maybe today we could talk about your family a little?"

Ink had wondered why anyone would have stuck his name into a raffle to be interviewed by school age foals. He didn't exactly consider what he does educational or something babby phony would be interested in, but none the less he'd entertained Pale's questions and made the whole thing as fun as possible for the both of them. He set down his tattoo gun and began to take it apart for cleaning as the foal had come in for the interview follow up. "Letz see..moi family. Well..My mothzer iz Noel. She groomz all ze mares and stallonz who 'ave any sense of style. Zere iz moi fathzer Negative who..he...uhm.." Ink fumbles for a clear answer to what his father did, "he 'unts and takez care of uz all." Yes, that would work. "I alzo 'ave a brothzer and three zizterz, they are ztill finding there cutie markz az well zo I think that makez moi the oldezt be default.." he chuckles at his little joke. "Do you need to know what they do in relation to their cutie markz or anything..?" He hoped not. He wasn't sure what his Dad's cutie mark even was or how it related to him and his mom's was just pretty and she was pretty and she decided to make everyone else pretty and that was that. Not a lot of substance there.

"So four siblings- and you're the only one who's got their cutie mark. I've also got four siblings, but NONE of us have our cutie marks!" Pale Moonlight said, not sure if he was trying to be funny or not. "Now, um, I'm supposed to ask-" he fumbled with his list of questions as he jotted down notes about Ink's father the hunter and fashionable mother. "Um. How did you get along with your siblings and- oh wait, that's if they got their marks first- yes, here. How did you get along with your siblings, and did they help in you figuring out your cutie mark? Were there arguments?" He stared at the list. "I... I am quite sorry, I know that's intensely personal. But I had little to do with the curation of this portion of the list, I'm afraid; we all have to ask that question." He wondered about the foal who'd drawn his mother's name; Taquita's siblings were somewhat notorious for being loud and rambunctious while she was decidedly not.

Ink looked sheepish and chuckled. "Ahh 'ow to put it wizout zounding 'orrible." He tapped his hoof on his chin. "My brothzer and moi, we would fight a bit. We 'ave similar intereztz that often lead to argumentz. 'E would be drawing 'iz designz and moi would be drawing mine and we would clazh over paint and bruzhez and paper..." He paused and thought a moment. "To be honezt moi waz not very found of my brothzer but moi haz found that you grow out of thoze kind of thingz when you are older and know yourzelf better. Moi'z zizterz are all very eazy going and kind, very much like my fathzer. Moi thinkz that my brothzer and moi inherited mothzers artiztic zide and alzo the temperamental one az well.."
Ink wriggled his nose. Something had been eating at him, and he found himself strangely self conscious to ask...
"Erm..Pale..moi waz wondering..'ow did the firzt part of the report go..?" He wondered if Glory or any of the other fillies or foals had been impressed by him more then by Pale's writing, but wasn't going to say that out lout.

"It went ok, mostly," Pale Moonlight said as he scribbled down notes. He and his own siblings got along pretty great most of the time, but he supposed as they grew up, there would be more and more time for fights. "They were super interested in the tattoos. It..." He scrunched up his nose. "It was just that when I tried to tell some of the little jokes that you did- like, I tried to convey your personality and how it was to talk to you- they fell flat. The class just stared at me, and I'm not really... comfortable with that kind of staring. I don't know why it didn't work, though; I mean, a joke's a joke, right?"

"Ehhh..not exzatly...If moi tellz a joke, it would be funny. But you parroting ze joke it would not be az funny becauze you are not me."He knew that sounded vague and he sat his tattoo gun down and turned to the colt. "Zee..a joke 'az to be relatable and you have to be relatable to ze joke. If you made a joke about..zay...Morning Glory, ze otherz might laugh becauze they know what you're talking about. But if you tell a joke zat I made, non might underztand it becauze zey are not familiar with me or my work.""You alzo might tell it wrong, or with the wrong emotions. If you tell ze joke with no proper build up or in the wrong tone, you rizk to come off very lame..alzo if you do not underztand the joke itzelf it can never be funny coming from you becauze you cannot relate to your own material."

Slowly, the reality of the situation began to dawn on Pale Moonlight. Of course the jokes sounded less funny coming from him, and of course the class didn't really understand. And besides, he wasn't really naturally funny. Definitely not ha-ha funny. Maybe kind of... dry? funny? But mimicking phonies who actually knew what they were doing was going to get him nowhere. Slowly, he nodded. "I think I get it. From an academic standpoint, at least, I know I get it. I think... I think next time I'm not going to try to repeat the jokes. I guess I'm kind of really more subdued, and I think they'll be more interested in hearing neat facts and good stories than jokes that don't work for me." He smiled shyly at the older stallion. It was beginning to dawn on him that these interviews were about way more than just the life stories of random adults in the community; they were about picking up on the lessons those adults might be able to teach. "It's kind of interesting to think about humor with a more detached view. It's not really something you read a lot about, or even that you probably can read a lot about. I know there's joke books and stuff, but realizing how humor actually works... But I'm getting off track! I'm sorry!"

"It'z no problem." Ink grinned. "Zere is a lot more to laughzter zen a lot of people realize. Humor, zingz zat make people laugh are almozt az unique az people themzelvez. BUT..." Ink pokes Moonlight's nose. "Everyone laughz and everyone likez to laugh, itz one of ze few thingz zat unitez uz, zo it iz very, very important in life, don't you zink?

Pale Moonlight had to smile a little when Ink booped his nose. "It is! It's definitely important to laugh. I just need to figure out the right way to do it!" He smiled at the stallion with genuine happiness. "Man, grownups are smart. At least, you're smart. You're a really smart grownup and it's been really, really nice getting to talk to you!"
Astrea Pandora I think we can wrap up pretty soon!

Ink laughed. "I know a zing or two, but zat iz all. Don't come around here azking about girlz az apparently I do non know zem az well az I zought zat I did.."He looks thoughtful for a moment, and then notices the clock on his wall. "Ahh..it iz almozt time for my evening appointment. Let'z wrap up our interview and if ze client iz ok with it, you can ztay and watch me work on hiz arm, if you like. Now..what deep, probing queztionz do you have left to azk me?"Scaramouche Fandango I think we can end it here unless there was a final post you wanted to make.

The foal smiled as he made a few more notes and wrapped up the interview. Girls could wait; right now, he had ink to learn about! Ink and laughter. Who knew adults could teach you so much?
Laughter get!
