 She had a cape.
Despite the fact that the girl was bright red, the cape was all that Pale Moonlight noticed. He'd gone out to play, as his mother had suggested in the hope that he'd actually make a friend his age, but had of course brought along a book, and was sitting on a bench ignoring the other children. Until she- well. Until her cape came along.
Pale Moonlight liked the idea of capes and cloaks. They added a certain flair to one's character and gave one's outward appearance an air of mystery and sophistication. There were some statements made with capes that were impossible to make with any other accessory. He sorely wanted one; he believed that wearing a cape on occasion would provide the operatic flair he so desired- but alas, he didn't have one, and tying a blanket around his neck just looked silly.
But he realized that he was staring, and that it was very, very rude to stare. So he ducked his head down and returned to the book, now taken up with the idea of capes. Oh, what to do? He knew he was far too shy to introduce himself, but he couldn't get that flash of crimson out of his mind!

Marvel loved to go out and play. She also loved making friends and saving phonies. Today she was playing at least, she'd gone out and went to the park to play. She had also brought along one of her trusty capes. It was a simple, black, and awesome. Wasn't as fancy as her favorite one, that one was split down the middle just like her favorite super hero. She too had started out at the blanket phase of capes but quickly escalated to a real one. Many. Her mother was more than happy to help her dress up. The filly was doing a round of walking, making sure all was safe around the play area when she felt eyes on her. She stopped and looked around. There was a colt sitting on a bench all by himself. He looked lonely and she knew it was him looking at her earlier. The colt was...interesting looking, he had a stripe down his back! Marvel trotted over to him and grinned. "Hi! Why aren't you playing with the rest of us?"

As he covertly sneaked peeks at the girl and her cape, Pale Moonlight attempted to make it look like he was truly engrossed in his novel. So when she came over, he fumbled. Floundering, he accidentally dropped the book, grabbing it at the last second with a tendril of magic. "I, uh, I was reading my book," he said lamely. "And, uh, that's why I wasn't playing." Manners compelled him to introduce himself. "I'm, uh, I'm Pale Moonlight." A drawn-out pause. "I'm sorry, but, uh, I don't think we've met?"

She hadn't even noticed he had been reading until she started talking. He had responded quickly enough so she didn't feel that bad about interrupting. If he really didn't want to play, he'd just say right? "No. But we did meet just now! I'm Marvel!" A quick glance to his book but she couldn't see it that well. "Well if you don't want to play, what are you reading? Is it exciting?" Marvel loved exciting things to read, like comics. She just didn't like boring non-fiction.

"It's nice to meet you, Marvel," said the unicorn, putting his book to the side. "It's called The Scarlet Pimpernel. It's about this English fellow named Percy Blakeney who lives in France right after their revolution, and he goes around saving people. But he can't do it as Percy Blakeney, so he puts on a cape and a mask and has this whole other secret identity to avoid the French government catching on, and he has this whole team of people helping him out. But other than them, nobody knows his secret. It's a musical, and, uh, yes- I guess it is pretty exciting. The whole 'put on a cape and have a secret' thing- this is the guy who basically invented that, and now it's pretty much everywhere." He neglected to tell her that literally the only reason he was reading the book was because it was a musical. Right now, his focus was on capes.

She perked up at the mention of saving people. And then got even more excited at the mention of capes and masks. She was liking the sound of it! A musical, well that didn't sound bad. "Wow! He invented the cape and mask thing, that must be an awesome book then. I'll have to remember that, next time I want to read a book." Well, Marvel read a bunch of comics usually, but she made room for books sometimes. "Hm, so musical means they like sing and act it out and dress up?"

"Yeah, and the costumes are always super neat. Not only is the design always really cool, but there's all kinds of swords- and of course, the Pimpernel himself gets a fancy disguise. And then there's Citizen Chauvelin- he's the bad guy- his robes are super cool, too. Also, he gets a guillotine." The unicorn colt nodded happily. "It's a pretty cool stage show, really. The music's great, the acting- well, that depends on the production company. But the costumes are really hard to mess up. But I guess you probably know a lot about costuming, or at least are a fan of it?" She has to be, with that cape.

Marvel listened happily to all the colt had to say. The idea of watching something like they be acted out live with costumes and swords and stuff sounded epic. "I have to find out if this ever comes to our area. I live love to see something like that." After all watching things took less time then reading did. Marvel nodded. She didn't know about super fancy costumes like that but did know some stuff. "My mom calls it, um, cosplay." Thinking about it, quite a bit if her family liked to dress up. "I have a full superhero costume and a lot of capes." and oh boy did she mean a lot. "Do you have any?"

The colt shook his head. "Not exactly. I mean, I have kind of a heavy cloak for winter, but nothing like that." His winter cloak was a sensible navy blue and made of wool. It didn't swish. It didn't swoop. It definitely wasn't scarlet. "Cosplay sounds pretty awesome. Your mom calls it that? Does she have a cape, too?" He grinned at his next thought. "Next thing I know, you're going to tell me that you're a whole family of vigilantes. Which would be awesome."

Scaramouche Fandango Anything but Spiderman: Turn off the Dark D: Marvel frowned a bit. "Winter cloaks aren't fun." Certainly you couldn't wear it whenever and play pretend. The filly nodded. "I think it means costume play. And yeah she has a few things. Well not all of us are vigilantes, my brother thinks he is a space captain." Which was awesome, kind of like a space vigilante. An idea crossed her head. She knelt her head and undid the clasp on her cape. "I know it isn't scarlet, but why don't you take this one. I have plenty at home."

"R-really?" he squeaked. "That's such an extravagant gift- and we've only just met!" Did politeness allow for him to accept? Would the filly's mother be mad at her for giving away her clothes? Or- if the whole family was into this sort of thing, would she be proud of her daughter for finding a new acolyte?
And besides, it would... it would at least give him the impetus to stop reading on a day as nice as this one. If she was willing to give him a cape, maybe she was willing to play with him, too. The colt wasn't particularly good at making friends, but maybe this act of generosity was the start of something really fun. elvyralani I figure we can wrap it up in a post or two! Same with the other one.

Marvel shrugged. It wasn't something she did normally, it was a nice cape too. But he seemed like he could really use it and wasn't being generous a good thing? She held the cape in her mouth and draped it over the colt's back. "There! It looks perfect on you." She thought for another moment. "If you want to try to act out some of your book, I don't mind being the bad guy." She assumed there was a bad person in the book, who might not have a cape.

"I'd like that. I'd like that a lot," he said shyly as he fastened the gorgeous cape around his own neck. Pale Moonlight didn't play with others very often. He was shy and timid- but for now, all that was forgotten, because he had a cape and now he was invincible. Carefully, he pushed the book against the back of the bench and hopped down to play. "Thank you- thanks a whole lot!" There was a lesson to be learned in this, a lesson he could think about later. Right now, there was a game afoot!
