User Image It was a typical day for Jord, having awoken late in the morning and making her social rounds throughout the pride. She had a few good friends she liked to keep up with and swap stories about how their days had gone the afternoon before, but none that weren't either too busy or simply not interested in joining her for her favorite past time. As per usual, the lioness made her way down to the sparring sands of the Stormborn's home territory, and there she sat to watch the males come and go as they pleased.

Once upon a time she had considered becoming a reaver herself, and boy had that been a disaster! At the very least, it made her appreciate the pride's men all the more, and she could understand the more traditional mindset that settled over the pride recently. What with a new warlord and all. Gosh, it didn't even seem like that long ago now that she thought about it. Almost like it was yesterday, in fact. Day-to-day life hadn't changed all that much, but the pride certainly seemed smaller now a days. She just couldn't help wondering how Aesir's brood was fairing out there in the roguelands, as she had known many of their faces.

With thoughts like that drifting into her mind, the lioness squarely shifted her attention to the sparring sands once more, hoping to drown out the unpleasantness with excitement. Finding a suitable spot to settle down at, a good distance away from any action that might take place, she lowered herself onto her belly to relax. Nothing like a good show to start the day.

User ImageSnorri was just finishing a bout with another reaver, so he was sweaty and sandy and cut up a bit - Turisas was not a reaver who played nicely when fighting - but it had been a very satisfying bout. Turisas had won, but that wasn't a huge surprise. The red and black lion was enormous and much faster than a lion that big ought to be. Snorri's bard blood made it very difficult to beat a lion like that, particularly if they had been fighting for as long as Turisas had been.

"Don't die in bed," he bid Turisas as he walked off the sand.

Unconsciously his paws carried him toward one of the spectators. There were almost always people watching the reavers spar. It was entertaining. Snorri did it, too, even though he was a reaver. It was also a good way to learn, though not as good as actually fighting, he reflected. His reflections were brought to an abrupt halt when his paws stopped a short distance from Jord.

"It's a good day to die," he greeted her with a lazy grin. He always felt more relaxed and social after a fight. "Who are you watching?"

Snorri may not have noticed who he had been approaching, but Jord surely took note of him. It was one thing to watch a good spar, and another to get chatty with one of the participants afterwards. Oh it was still exciting, no doubt about that, but it was a different kind of amusement that had her maw pulling into a welcoming smile. "Certainly seems that way", she commented, shifting her weight to one side and readjusting her paws out in front of her. She'd seen Snorri fight before, as he seemed to frequent the sands as often as she did. It was encouraging to know how diligent some of the reavers were at keeping their skills honed. And, might she add, pleasing to be able to watch.

Her gaze drifted to the sands briefly at the mention of watching, but they brought themselves back Snorri in no time at all. "A little bit of everyone, but", she hesitated to look over the sandy, cut-up lion, "It seems like I missed a good one." In truth, she had caught glimpses of the tail-end of Snorri's brawl with Turisas, but her eyes had been drawn away every couple of moments to keep a watch on the other combatants and their battles. "Did you win?" Now that was something she had missed, and curiosity plainly colored her tone.

Snorri might have read a little bit more into Jord's welcoming smile than she intended. He had always found her a pretty lioness and didn't hold that silliness about trying to be a reaver against her. That had been in the past, and under a different warlord. An outlander warlord.

"So you weren't watching me?" he asked. He had almost played it with feigned hurt, as if she'd wounded his feelings by saying so, but that would not have helped him with the image of a somewhat dumb, emotionally distant reaver that he preferred to maintain. "You're right. You missed a good fight."

He flopped comfortably onto the ground beside her. Not too close because he was covered in sand and sweat and a bit of blood, which no one who was clean really appreciated having someone get on them. Of course, that consideration was more or less negated when he shook his head and sent sand flying from his mane. Oops.

"Turisas won," he admitted. Then, without self-consciousness or haste, he added, "But there were some really great exchanges. You should've been watching us."

She tilted her head at him, the corners of her lips pulling back into what might have passed as a sheepish smile for the stocky lioness, as if having been caught doing something embarrassing. "Snorri, I've watched you quite a bit recently, its only fair I share the attention every once and while", she jested at him. "If that's the case though, and I did miss a good one, I may need to start keeping a better eye on you," she continued in good humor, and easy voice. If it was one thing Jord enjoyed at the sparring grounds, it was a good bit of harmless flirting. Not with everyone of course. There were some nasty brutes in the Stormborn that she wouldn't even bat an eyelash at, good fighters more or less, but not at all lions to be messed with.

Snorri on the other paw, though skilled in battle, was an approachable male that she could relax around. It helped that he had a certain degree of handsomeness to him, even covered in sand and blood it was difficult for her to tear her eyes from him to keep track of the current spars. In the end, she wound up just paying attention to him after all.

All of these good things, and there he went shaking his mane and spraying sweaty sand all over her. A surprised yelp reached her throat, but she managed to quell it at the last second. She didn't think anyone had heard her, but Snorri might have and she scowled at him for that. She wasn't angry, not really, but that that didn't mean she didn't want revenge! "Careful, you missed a spot", she told him, making sure to scrape some sand onto her toe and bringing it up to wipe it on the bridge of his nose. She smiled at him then, triumphant in her victory. "That's much better, don't you think?" The thought that he might try to get her back for that crossed her mind and she was quick to n** it in the butt just in case! "If I promise to keep a better watch of your fights, you have to promise not to assault with me sand", she told him, smirking slightly and flicking her ears back in a confident gesture. That ought to stop him. Of course, she completely forgot to mention any other type of revenge.

Snorri preened. Not just inwardly. Externally, too. His chin tilted upwards a little and he squeezed his eyes shut in a slow, pleased blink. He liked hearing that she had been watching him. He didn't see much reason why she ought to share the attention though.

"That seems unnecessary," he said, referring to her sharing attention, though he realized too late that she could easily interpret it as meaning that it was unnecessary for her to keep a better eye on him. To try to make it clearer what he'd meant to say, he added, "Other lions aren't as interesting as I am."

Sometimes it galled him to say things that sounded so dumb, but he really did have a colossal ego and if he wanted people to underestimate him, he would have to keep up the facade of being less intelligent than he believed himself to be. And yet somehow prove he was smart enough to be a captain. Ugh. Sometimes it was such a pain to be clever.

He didn't understand why she was scowling at him until he remembered that he'd probably flung sand at her. He hadn't even been thinking about it, but now he at least had the good manners to look chagrined, which lasted about as long as it took her to rub sand onto his nose. The thin skin there wrinkled as the granules shifted and tickled as they fell down the sides of his nose and bumped his whiskers on the way to the ground.

"No sandy assaults," he agreed, noticing the loophole but seeing no convenient way to take advantage of it at the moment.

"Good." Jord was satisfied with that answer, giving him a pleased nod of her head. It wouldn't do to get sand stuck to her pelt, it would take quite the while to groom out. The little bits she had now wouldn't be a problem, but any more and she'd need to stoop to drastic measures. Such as taking a rinse in the sea and allowing her fur to dry on a sunbathed rock, all the while tip toeing across the shore and hoping not to attract any more sand.

But she was getting ahead of herself, and she did have a handsome male to keep her attention. Her maw slipped back into a content, pleasant, smile and she continued with their conversation. As brutish and silly as he may sound sometimes, he wasn't nearly as bad as some of the other men. She could at least talk to him, and find amusement in his egotistical remarks.

"Well, since its so important to you", she began, tilting her head at him in a feigned exasperation. "You should invite me to come with you anytime you feel like sparring. I won't have the opportunity to miss you again." That seemed like a lot of work for how many times Snorri came to spar, but she was interested in their little flirting game, and wanted to see how far he'd allow her to take it.

Snorri offered the tips of his canines in a grin as she visibly relaxed. He liked to have female attention focused on him, particularly when the female in question was attractive and pleasant to be around. Jord was both things, and therefore a most suitable companion.

"Consider yourself invited," he replied. Then he looked her up and down and made a face. "You don't intend to try me, do you?"

If she wanted sparring lessons, he'd be all right with giving them, but mostly he just thought it was cute when lionesses tried to be fighters. He didn't want to have to listen to her talking about how the sexes should be equal and could all do the same things and...yech. No. Maybe in the past, when the pride's bloodlines had more god blood in them that was true, but it was pretty diluted nowadays.

((No worries, I know how that is.))

Ah, good. She was quite pleased with his acceptance and the continuing of their little game, but as soon as he made that face and asked that question she looked down right appalled. Her nose wrinkled as if she had a bad taste in her mouth and she quickly shook her head at him.

"Not in the slightest", she told him. After all, she had tried that before when Aesir was the warlord and females were allowed to be reavers. She was very young then, and filled with silly ideas. She did not intend on making that mistake twice, and was feeling sheepish now it was brought it up again. She had been having a pleasant conversation before this point though, so she tried to salvage what she could of her dignity to continue with it.

"Besides, look at you", she said with a smirk, visibly looking the lion up and down. "I wouldn't even stand a chance." A glint came to her eyes and rested her chin against her paws, looking back up at him with something akin to a knowing, partially raised brow. "But, if you'd like to give me private lessons sometime, I suppose you could come by my den one of these days." Hmm, being alone with Snorri with an excuse for physical contact didn't sound so bad after all.

Snorri's relief was palpable when Jord firmly told him that she would not be fighting him. It had not occurred to him for a moment that he ought to worry about her being able to best him, but he didn't much enjoy pretending to struggle in a fight when he didn't have to for the sake of his opponent's ego, which he would feel obliged to do with a female.

"I'm sure you'd be a very clever and wily fighter," Snorri said, capable of being free with complimentary speculation now that he knew nothing would come of it.

Despite having grown up in the pride, he had managed to remain completely ignorant of Jord's rebellious "I'm a reaver" phase, so he misinterpreted her negation somewhat. He was pleased by the interpretation he came up with though, which was that Jord was simply a traditional freeborn who understood that a lioness's place was in the home, raising strong cubs and fighting only in defense.

"Perhaps I'll take you up on that," he said, pretending that he had not noticed the levels to her invitation. "A lioness on her own should know how to bring a lion down should it become necessary."
