I don't like it, Ferros grumbled.

I know you don't. You're going to have to deal with it, because I need practice with these and you're just way too big to use on the new kids now. Jordan flipped one of the runic daggers into the air, watched it spin, and caught the hilt as it came down. It had taken more practice than he liked to admit to get the hang of timing it correctly, and he was grateful for the Fear shield, since without it his fingers would have been well bloodied.

He'd texted Heidi, and she should be here soon; in the meantime, he'd practice his dagger skills. He flipped one of the daggers over to hold it by the tip, turned, and threw it at one of the targeting dummies. As soon as it left his hand, he knew that it wasn't going to go where he'd aimed it; it skimmed the dummy's shoulder, slicing the burlap open, and spun off to thud into the ground. He sighed and jogged over to retrieve it.

If it was me, you could just resummon me.

I don't throw you, Jordan answered wryly.

Ferros made a low grumbling noise and sulked.

A spar with a hunter. That was exciting! She'd never sparred with a hunter before, not like this. Heidi was very excited, so excited she had run all the way from the dorms to the training field. She arrived just as Jordan threw a dagger at a training dummy. "Jordan?" Heidi called out as she approached, her voice breathless from all her running. "Those are neat. Those runics?" She'd never seen them in person!

"I'm Heidi! Nice to meet you. Thanks for this! I haven't sparred much yet."

Jordan turned at the sound of someone calling his name, smiling at the petite blonde moon trainee who was approaching. "Nice to meet you, Heidi," he said, and slipped one of the daggers back into its sheath so he could offer a handshake.

"Yes, these are barrier daggers," he explained then, and showed her the other one, turning it so that it wasn't pointed at her and so she could get a good look. "When charged, they're used to create a temporary barrier around a person or area to repel hostile Fear or other attacks. This set isn't charged, and I'll be using them for the spar instead of my weapon. I need more training with them. Ferros - that's my weapon - is too big for enclosed spaces, so I'm learning other styles to compensate for times when I can't summon him. It'll also give you an edge in the spar." He grinned. "I'm not going to go easy on you just because you're new here. Fair?"

Barrier daggers..neat! Heidi looked to the dagger that was being showed to her, tracing a few of the runes with a gloved finger. That was cool! Moons were all about barriers and protection and stuff, right? She'd need to get herself a pair of these too. "Ferros is too big? Can I see him?" Jordan had her curious now. That William guy said his weapon was flat out banned from being used in spars...how big did your weapon have to get for that to happen!? Heidi was already getting the feeling she would be really glad to not be fighting Jordan while using Ferros, he as a...Sun hunter? That was a really nice coat he had, she couldn't help but admire how fluffy it was. It fit kind of oddly on him though..huh. Maybe he liked it that way. She wasn't judging. It was cool to see all the different varieties in coats though.

"Huh? Oh, yeah. Totally fair. I wasn't expecting you to like...not give it your all just 'cause I'm a newbie or something. Don't worry about it." Heidi grinned and summoned her weapon with a little more ease for once. She was starting to get the hang of it! Heck yeah! "I've never fought someone with daggers before. This'll be fun!" The closest she'd come had been Tuck's axe and even that could be a slightly larger distance than a dagger. "Ah...who makes the first move? Do we, like, draw straws or flip a coin or something? I'm still not used to this, sorry." Heidi gave a little laugh at her own words, slightly embarrassed about her question.

"Sure. He likes to show off." Jordan grinned and stepped back, sheathing the other dagger before he held his right hand out to the side. The red stone in the heavy ring on his index finger flashed suddenly bright, then the ring seemed to dissolve in a swirl of metallic motes, reforming in Jordan's hand as the gigantic hammer. In spite of the fact that Ferros's head was bigger than his torso, Jordan flipped the hammer easily up to rest across his shoulder like it weighed almost nothing. "This is Ferros," he said proudly.

"You go ahead," he answered, giving her a wicked look. "Free shot."

Whoa. Heidi's jaw dropped at the sight of the gigantic hammer. No, no...gigantic hammer was not the proper description. It was the iceberg that sank the Titanic, a Transformer in disguise, a small car on a stick. That was not a hammer. She was really, really glad she wasn't fighting that hammer. She kinda wanted to touch it...one of those 'oh my god let me touch it it's so magnificent' moments.

Matilda huffed, her runes flashing bright blue to get Heidi's attention off Ferros. Thine eyes must not stray! It is I who matters, or I shall make you pay! There we go. She had been forgetting to rhyme lately. Heidi blinked and looked down at her bow a moment before turning her attention back up to Jordan and Ferros.

"He's...incredible! Like, super awesome! That's so crazy how you can hold him like he's an inflatable toy." Now she was worried. Jordan didn't look stupid strong but now she thought he might be.

She swallowed, raising her bow and drawing the string. A glowing white arrow formed itself as she aimed, finally releasing the string and firing at Jordan.

"Thanks," Jordan said, chuckling. "He's preening now. His ego is certainly inflatable." As Heidi raised her bow, Ferros returned, somewhat reluctantly, to his totem form, though the red stone in the ring stayed brightly lit; Jordan drew the daggers again, adjusting his grip experimentally, then settling into a fighting stance. The arrow skimmed through his shoulder, and he rolled his shoulder and nodded approvingly at Heidi. "Nice shot."

He moved to the side, cautiously circling and thinking strategy; as always, he had a disadvantage against ranged weaponry. Using the daggers would require an even shorter range than Ferros did. He'd have to be quick and accurate to get in under Heidi's range.

"Thanks!" Heidi grinned when Jordan complimented on her aim. She was getting better! That was good! As he stalked her she turned to follow him, not taking her eyes off the senior hunter. "Creepy, dude." She teased with a laugh, keeping her bow at the ready.

Suddenly she drew and fired without taking the minute to aim, keeping her bow horizontal in front of her with the bladed edge pointed toward Jordan just in case.

"Cautious," Jordan corrected, laughing a little. He watched her shoulders and hands carefully. As she fired, he moved; the arrow sliced across his cheek as he lunged towards her, and he twisted to avoid the bladed edge of her bow and bring his forearm around and up to strike at her arm and throw off her aim, even as the other dagger sank into her side.

Crap! CRAAAAAAP! Heidi gasped and stumbled on her own two feet to get away from Jordan, but her arm and side were cut anyway. Holy crap that hurt! She hissed with pain and, without even a second thought, shifted her grip on her bow to grasp one end of it and swing its bladed edge at Jordan like a baseball bat while she fell flat on her a**.

Nailed it.

Okay, maybe not.

"Geeze!" She put a hand against her side and used her bow as support to get back up. "You're crazy good at that." Heidi lifted her hand to check how much blood was on it, looking relieved that her hand was clean. Yeah, crazy good..aw man! He cut her coat. "How do you guys deal with fighting in these coats? Do you all like know how to sew or something?" Matilda was glowing brightly now, her runes pulsing and crackling with a charge that begged to be released.

Oh this would end well.

Jordan jerked away from the bladed edge of the bow, narrowly avoiding getting nailed in the face; shield or not, that always hurt like a b***h. It slashed across his chest and shoulder instead.

"You learn, or you pay somebody," he answered. "Or you take your coat off for spars." Which he really should have done this time; she did have a bladed weapon. Pausing now would be a distraction, though; he brought one dagger around to slash at her arm, eyeing the bow with some trepidation. Its runes were pulsing with a charge.

I'm hungry, Ferros whined.

We'll spar a ranked hunter later. This was the difficult part of fighting with the daggers, though; he couldn't build a charge for Ferros, and that left them without offensive or healing Fear.

"I'll keep that in mind. Too late now." Heidi laughed, not bothering to get up. Matilda was whining in her head like a needy puppy who wanted to go out for walkies. She drew back an arrow, the string giving a strained screech that got louder and louder with time until Heidi fired it. The banshee shriek followed the arrow--

Into the sky.

High above Jordan's head.

It was just like her spar with Tuck.

Heidi couldn't help but laugh again. "Wow, I suck."

"Everybody misses sometimes," Jordan answered, quirking a smile with a slight touch of relief in it. Charge attacks could really throw him off when he didn't have Ferros's charges to offset them.

He kept moving, making Heidi aim, and darted in to stab at her shoulder.

Heidi shrugged. "I miss a lot. No big, I just need practice. Matilda's charge feels weird to do...like..the string wants to stretch but it also doesn't. It feels more...I dunno..taut? It's weird to explain, it makes it hard to hit targets with though." Maybe she killed a bird up in the sky. Who knows.

She managed to stand up again just in time for Jordan to get her in the shoulder, raising her bow to block him just a moment too late. Heidi winced. "You're really good with those. Could you teach me sometime?" She kept Matilda raised in front of her.

"Ferros gives off a sense of heat and excitement when he's charged. It's different for everyone, but you can always tell. You'll get better with more practice." The dagger scraped along Matilda's blade, making a grating sound. Jordan grimaced. "Well, that was unpleasant."

He returned to the sidewise circling. "I can give you some pointers sometime, once you're cleared for barrier daggers. You might want to consult with Matilda, though. Some weapons get upset if you're using something else. Ferros only tolerates it because he knows he's too big to summon in small spaces and I need to be able to fight anywhere."
