The steady sound of rain falling was supposedly a soothing, relaxing noise. This was not the case for the restless foal that stood as a silent witness to the weather. Nova's Harmony glared with all his muster at the droplets falling from the sky. It was still rather dark beyond the cave that his parents called home for the moment as he and his sisters needed the extra protection. His dad had told his children about the dangers in the world beyond the cave and Nova had taken the stories to heart. It didn't stop the young colt from wanting to explore, or even to have a good night's rest. But when the rain kept Nova from getting the sleep that he craved he had taken to pacing the mouth of the cave and sending murderous looks towards the sky. He just wanted to sleep, was it too much to ask.

If it wasn't one thing that woke him up ... usually something else did. In this case the hooves of his familiar Hesperos striking him in his stomach brought wakefulness to Orion's Verse. The stallion nudged the goat gently away from him before taking in the slumbering forms around him. All safe and accounted for it seemed. Orion's sleepy gaze ticked off each individual in the cave before he paused. Someone wasn't accounted for. Orion opened his eyes wider and noted the missing family member. His son, Nova's Harmony, was not curled up beside his sisters. Getting to all four hooves the stallion debated waking Katell before he caught a noise from behind him. He turned his head in that direction and spotted the missing culprit.

Silently Orion approached his son before taking in the rain that poured down from the sky in a grey sheet. "You should be sleeping Nova."

To say that the colt jumped into the air at his father's words was an understatement. Nova could have hit the roof of the cave in his surprise had he continued to beat his wings against the still air that was around him. Nova turned his eyes to stare at his dad before casting another glare towards the weather. He then scuffed the ground with his hoof. "I can't sleep though. The rain is keeping me awake. It's too loud."

Nova turned his gaze away from the rain before locking his gaze with his dad's. "Why are you up?"

Orion watched his son switch his gaze from the rain to him, back and forth, before finally turning to look only at him. He gazed down at the colt with warmth in his heart before nuzzling his son. "Unlike you son, I find that the sound of rain lulls me into a state where sleep could easily be come by. However the painful sensation of being kicked in the stomach usually brings someone to wake up pretty quickly."

Orion cast a mild glare towards the responsible party before eying his son's wings. How much he looked the part of his grandfather. The thought brought Orion to a possible topic he could breach with Nova. Maybe he'd even get his son back to sleep.

"Nova, have you ever been curious about where your sisters and your names come from?"

Nova didn't pull away from the affection that his father graced him with. However when Orion pulled back and shot a glare towards his familiar Nova couldn't help but giggle. He stopped almost immediately at his father's mock glare. He didn't want to wake everyone else up and he resumed shooting the odd glance towards the rainy weather outside.

At his father's words Nova glanced at his dad in confusion. "Our names? What's so special about them?" Nova's full attention was on his father now.

Orion chuckled softly at Nova's reaction. Somehow he knew that he would get his son's attention with a little behind the scene information. Nuzzling at Nova's side he gestured to the colt to move beyond the pile sleeping bodies that was his family. Orion quickly glanced back to Katell and his daughters before giving a soft sigh to join his son. He glanced outside before walking out into the rain. "Come Nova, we'll walk a bit so as to not wake everyone up."

The stallion watched his son carefully. He was sure that Nova would refuse coming out into the inclement weather. He did not know what it felt like to have wet feathers but clearly it always bothered Nova a lot. The stallion could not help but admire his son’s wings for a moment. He was definitely the progeny of his own grandsire.

Nova's Harmony wasn't about to lose a chance to learn something about his family that his sisters would not learn. The colt paled though at the fact that he would have to brave the weather outside in order to learn this secret. Stumbling quickly out of the cave the foal glanced back and forth before spotting his father walking away from the place that they called home for now. Nova's spindly legs carried him towards Orion. He would have loved to fly but the rain was already soaking his wings. Nova hated rain. Once again he looked up at the sky and scowled before yelping as a large raindrop splashed against his eye. Another one soon followed and Nova growled before lowering his gaze.

"Dad wait for me,"

It was almost a whine that came from his throat as Nova stumbled in his haste to catch up.

At Nova's plaintive cry Orion stopped and turned around just in time to see his son stumble and land face first into a puddle. Flinching slightly the stallion moved to Nova's side and gently nipped at his son's mane. "Alright I suppose this will have to do. I know you don't like wet feathers Nova but it is possibly too dangerous to continue on."

Orion's mane was plastered against his skin already with the deluge and he gently positioned himself so that he was shielding Nova from the worst of the downpour. Once again he nipped at Nova to encourage his son to rise to his hooves and get himself out of the puddle. It would do no good if Nova were to get sick. "Now where were we?"

There was something miserable about falling in front of his dad and landing face first in a puddle. Nova lay still as the water pooled around his body before he felt and saw his father return to him. At the insistent nips from Orion the foal struggled to his feet. He ducked under his dad's frame and made sure that his horn didn't scratch at his dad's stomach. He was grateful for the instant shelter but felt a little bad that he had to do so. "You were about to tell me about the special reason for our names and why you and mom chose them."

Nova paused before shaking his wings out a little. "So what is so special about them dad?"

Feeling a little better that Nova had risen from the puddle that he had fallen into Orion relaxed and even withstood the minor shower that he got when his son shook the moisture from his wings. Orion glanced down towards Nova before thinking about the subject that he was about to share with his son.

"Names are powerful things. Your mother and I agreed that we would construct your names together and so we did. She chose one part and I chose the other. Twined together they reflect a balance between both of us."

There was more to be told but Orion was not sure if his son would understand. He glanced back towards the cave and sighed. Hopefully Nova would be content with that explanation and not ask about the choosing process.

Was that all there was to the story? Nova huffed in disbelief. Surely there was more to his name than his mother and father picking random words? Nova thought about his name for a moment before reflecting on the names that his sisters carried before a slight niggling bit of doubt crept into his young mind. It almost seemed as if his dad was trying to deceive him a little. Why?

Nova stared at the face peering down at him before he groaned. "That is not all there is to the story is it dad? There has to be more. Why will you not tell me everything?"

There was an urge to run away and back into the cave. Although mostly protected by the rain Nova was still getting wet. Rain was dripping off his dad's belly and onto him still.

Orion's Verse should have known that his son's stubborn streak would mean that he would persist in learning the real truth behind his name. Why had he been sure of the idea that he'd be able to fool his son into thinking otherwise? At his son's expression Orion sighed deeply before glancing skyward. The rain was still coming down just as hard. If they stayed out much longer both would be at risk for becoming ill.

"Okay there is more. Once I tell you though we have to get back under real cover. Your mom won't be happy with me if we both fall sick."

Orion gazed towards the cave before speaking softly, "your names have more to them than just words being thrown together. It was your grandmother's idea to continue the name scheme that she began with me. Sadly your aunt Delphina doesn't follow suit but your names come from joining of two things: an object in space and usually a musical term. It is how you came to be known as Nova's Harmony. Does that answer your question son?"

Orion moved away from Nova before turning back towards the cave. He knew Nova wouldn't stay out for too long and would long to get to a place where he would be dry. Orion would bet his horn on that happening rather soon.

Nova's ears flicked back and forth as he listened to the rest of the story behind his name. There was confusion in his gaze as he heard words that he was not familiar with. What was space? What was music? He pondered those questions in silence. At least he had one question answered now but the problem was the appearance of two more. He was about to open his mouth to ask his newest questions when he realized that the shelter he had been experiencing was no more.

Yelping with shock as the rain once again lashed his tiny body Nova made every effort to turn around and streak back towards the cave. He arrived at the mouth of the cave just before Orion did and paused to nuzzle his dad's leg in a silent thank you. He shook his wings out before finding a spot between his sisters to lie down in. He eyed his father before letting his eyes close. There was silence in the cave for the moment and the sound of the rain still echoed in his ears. Nova turned around restlessly before contemplating what he had been told. It appeared that it'd be pointless to continue the charade of sleep so Nova opened his eyes and stared at the cave walls in silence.
