Wash was sitting on a bench near the training grounds, meticulously polishing his shield.

It was probably not as suggestive looking as it sounded.

Sally wasn't really dirty, per se. He wasn't really sure how that worked - after all, they desummoned into tiny pocket-size objects. Did the dirt and dust just fall off? Or was the remaining mass of the weapon placed somewhere outside of time and space, complete with grime and muck? Ultimately it was an idle and unimportant question, and he dismissed it. It had been a long time since he'd been down here, he reflected. The last time he could really remember had been with Sasha, and they -

He chuckled to himself. Well, he hadn't done too badly that day.

After a time he stood, securing his weapon to his arm and approaching a dummy uncertainly. They weren't exactly made for his type of weapon, but he made a few half-hearted thrusts anyway.

Rep didn't need to train as much as he used to any more, at least that was what he told himself. However, it didn't change the deeply ingrained habits of over a year and the second his shift was done over in the labs, rather than getting lunch or unwinding, he went straight to the training grounds. He'd brought lunch with him in the form of a healthy snack - a chocolate bar - which he devoured on the way.

Rather than heading to the dummies himself, he spotted Wash and beelined in his direction instead, pausing with arms crossed to watch him.

He didn't say a word.

Thrust. Feint. Thrust.

Sally didn't feel as heavy as she used to, but pretending to duck and dodge around a stationary mannequin was rather embarrassing. Maybe he should go for a jog or something instead.

Yeah.

He turned around to make good on that decision when suddenly-

"Oh." Of all the people on the island, this was - well, Wash had to admit he hadn't actively been avoiding him so much as conveniently never running into him. It seemed today his luck had changed.

Well, he couldn't just say nothing. It would be rude. "Hey there, man."
PostPosted: Mon Apr 29, 2013 2:22 pm

"Hey." His tone was friendly but his expression didn't relax from the rather mirthless mask of a smirk he always wore when he found himself in a delightful situation he hadn't expected. Wash was on his own, without Sasha there to defend him, and though it was far too risky to hurt him - it contravened the rules of the game after all - it didn't mean he couldn't play now did it?

He stretched, flexing his shoulders one after the other.

"You look like you could use some practice - that is to say - a sparring partner." He dragged his gaze from the dummies back to Wash, with just a twist of condescension in his tone as he added. "Unless that really was an accurate sample of your abilities. In that case god ******** help you."

The insults stung, but he did his best to let them roll off his back and chuckled appreciatively. After all, he had probably looked pretty ridiculous.

She said to be safe. Was this safe?

Maybe not.

But if he said no... Well, he had some pride. Besides, they'd worked together before, albeit in the spirit of Christmas. "Can't say no to such a kind offer, sir."

Rep wasn't used to being called Sir by anyone who wasn't some kind of public servant or food industry worker, it was strange and almost insulting as if intentionally pointing out to him why he would never really be worthy of being sir anything.

"Good." he said. "Clearly at least your judgement's working, even if the rest of your fighting skills could do with a bit of work."

He couldn't shake the doubts, even now. No longer a Sun, a reject from the ranks, maybe he'd lose this spar too, maybe it was why he'd already lost so many. "Then put up your dukes. Or shield. Or whatever."

Wash smiled in reply - a grin that was more grimace than anything. He shifted his feet a little uncertainly, eventually settling into place and holding up his shield.

Rep's smile was absolutely devoid of pleasantness as he dove in for the attack. His instincts told him to summon Tracey. He ignored them.

His first strike was a very solid punch aimed straight at the other man's shield, he wasn't about to try cheating and ducking around it until he got a feel for what his reflexes were like.

Wash wasn't expecting the sheer brute strength of the bare-handed blow as Rep landed a hit on his shield. He winced, and could feel his arm numb a bit.

Careful, careful.

Sally's admonishment wasn't necessary - Wash was already backing away a bit and attempting to circle. After a few moments, he feinted to the side, trying for a blow of his own. He used the surface of his shield instead of turning it on it's edge - he was wary of giving the stronger hunter an opening. If he could do this without his weapon... Well, it wasn't so surprising that he'd put more than a fair share of hunters in the infirmary. Wash's expression was focused, and a little strained with effort.

He had a lot to prove.

The pain from the strike against the other man's shield sang through his knuckles and it was satisfying, there was something so much more ******** personal about going head to head with the moon's shield with just his bare hands. It was interesting to see how one actually fought with a shield, and the blow, unexpected due to unfamiliarity made him stagger backwards.

"Hahah, no ******** bad." It wasn't to be underestimated, a solid charge with that thing could cause him a world of pain he decided. He had to keep his guard up.

But it was ******** interesting to test, feinting an assault to the left before arcing around with a kick to the right.

Wash wasn't expecting the kick, and it hit him with full force, staggering him.

"s**t," he exclaimed, backpedaling and favoring his left side.

Come on, Wash. Sally's voice in his head was more urgent, now. You don't want to be at his mercy, do you?

It certainly wasn't a pleasant thought, and his mouth set in a grime line as he reversed his momentum, pushing forward and trying to force the other hunter backward with his shield. What had he been thinking? This was his first time squaring off in a long time. Even though the other hunter didn't summon his weapon, Wash was clearly outmatched - which might have been okay, but agaist him...

It rankled. He said he'd be safe. He'd be careful.

Not a Sun. Not a Sun any longer, not good enough for them. Normally he tried to keep things in check, to fight with poise and control. He didn't need to any more, what really was the ******** point? All the effort ultimately for nothing. It was meant to be a casual spar and he tried to remind himself of that, but the more he fought, faced with the other man, the reminder that Sasha still had everything she really wanted, everything she ******** needed, while he'd lost his home was hard to take. Jealousy ran like venom in his thoughts.

Nothing personal he thought. Nothing ******** personal but envy.

This time he was more prepared for the charge and let himself use the momentum of the shove to land on his feet, the air rattled out of his lungs for a moment.

"How are you ever going to ******** protect her?" he hissed as he gathered himself.

Without waiting for an answer, he leapt forward again and delivered another jarring blow directly to Sally, snarling as he threw his entire weight into the swing.

The comment left Wash rattled, and he wasn't braced for the next blow. The numbness reached up into his shoulder now, and he felt his hand shake violently. His grip on Sally was threatening to fail.

Wash. Wash, we can't take much more of this. There was a wild edge of panic, and he felt the thrill of it up his spine.

He tried to concentrate, tried to see past the adrenaline pumping through his veins. To be calm, rational. He didn't know what kind of ire he'd given rise to in the other man, and because of that he wasn't sure how to deal with it. Besides, the remark had hit home. He bowed his head for a moment, trying to focus. Just breathe. Slow down.

He couldn't protect her, but not for the reasons the other hunter was implying. No, the truth was far more painful than all that. He raised his shield, and slowly repeated the words back to himself in a voice unusually devoid of emotion.

"I can't protect her from herself."

It was a losing battle, but he wouldn't relent. He thrust forward again with weary determination.

Rep felt alive. For the first time in what felt like weeks he felt truly alive, adrenaline was his absolute ******** favourite thing in the world, and that deep rooted anger and hate all but fed on it like a fuel.

He couldn't protect her from herself.

He laughed out loud, a wild and manic cackle that was inappropriately loud. "No. No you ******** can't. Because the monster that lives in half of her, you can't ******** fight." But he could. Maybe it was one of the only ******** things in the world he could. Everyone else was too busy telling him he wasn't good enough for the rest.

Snarling, he leapt forward again with another swing, wishing he still had the vast brutal talons he'd had in blue kingdom, Tracey's silence bleeding into a desire to feel flesh and bone rent asunder. "It would eat you alive."

taste him.> the fallen angel hissed in his thoughts.

Wash faltered, falling to one knee.

Wash!

"Don't matter," he muttered, shaking his head. He wasn't hurt yet. He was on the edge -that fine, fine line.

"It don't matter," he stated, more clearly this time, digging his back heel in. He leaned forward to brace the shield against his knee. She could eat him alive - burn him up. It didn't change anything. "I have 't try."

Wash peered searchingly at the other hunter over the lip of his shield . "Everybody casts a shadow, Rep, but you cain't have shadows without light." He would fight for that- that flicker of hope. The part of her that made it hurt to see him sad. The part that had twined them thick as thieves, the woman who'd filled his closet with shoes and dresses and his heart and mind with hopes and dreams. Dreams of a future, a place to belong - a home.
