Hey, I was talking to some people on facebook about gay couples and they had a very skewed view of homosexuality in my opinion....I mean they have a right to an opinion, we all do but this kind of offended me.

The person I debated with said that if homosexuals get all the rights in a civil union, why would they fight for getting marriage rights?

I don't understand humans anymore. A civil union isn't marriage, it is simply the agreement to live together for the rest of your lives, from my perspective. You are giving them every right except marriage. And this confused me.

Plus, though I know little about civil unions, I doubt they would get the same amount of rights as married couples, because if they did, they wouldn't be fighting for their right to marry. Though I doubt that too, because I would fight for my right to marry as well, if I was told I couldn't.

This is all so confusing.

"There are 1,138 benefits, rights and protections provided on the basis of marital status in Federal law."

This is something I found on the Human Rights Campaign website when I was looking for information before a debate about gay marriage.

So why would homosexual couples want to get married? Oh I don't know... maybe so they can pick their kid up from school, visit their lover in the hospital, get tax breaks, or one of the other 1,138 benefits that come with marriage, or maybe it's because they freaking love someone.

That is all. Good luck mate.

I wish I used that in the debate I had. Though I am not sure why it would be a debate.

Probably the biggest relevant argument is that we already know separate but equal doesn't work. Marriage rights are important not just because of securing one or two domestic partnership benefits, but full legal standing under the law. In addition to the talking points about the number of rights people secure by getting married, there is a strong social argument that a segmented society is one that tacitly condones discrimination - it tacitly expresses the fact that people in the separated segment of society are irreparably different than the rest of society, usually with huge negative consequences. The same exact issues happened (and continue to happen) as a result of racial discrimination, and sexuality and gender-based discriminations are no better.

Furthermore, preserving gender binary segregated laws is damaging to anyone who is challenging the gender binary or who doesn't fit into traditional views of gender. It can be very challenging, for example, for some trans folks to get married or get many other legal benefits due to potentially not having their gender match their government-issued IDs or other paperwork necessary to do things like get married. Having a gender neutral policy helps to negate those effects and opens up the options for a wider variety of people.

Realistically, of course, the fact of the matter is that restricting anyone's rights based on gender or sexual orientation is disgusting and wrong, and it needs to be fixed because it is a major form of codified bigotry in the US and many other parts of the world. But I suppose there are a lot of people who simply don't understand that.

This topic made me think about this article I read last week:

Same-sex Marriage: the culture war is over

It's an interesting perspective, focusing on the discrimination against homosexuals in Australia. The website itself is also pretty awesome.

As for personal opinion, I think there are two things that need to be established: one, we need to get rid of DOMA. Two, our government needs to stop being stupid and start enforcing the Constitution. Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion (such as, making same-sex marriage illegal because several religious institutions dictate it's a sin and then use their congregations to vote according to their religious moral standards), or prohibiting the free exercise thereof (meaning, the law can't stop you or your church from believing whatever it wants).

So basically, the first amendment says, "Religion—you leave us alone, and we'll leave you alone." I think that's a fair trade. Too bad we got self-proclaimed patriots who don't respect the declarations our country was founded on.
