"Is there a Renaissance Faire in town that I don't know about?"

The voice was silky in the dark, quiet air at the back of Destiny City library. It was a Tuesday night, Myrkviðr had time to kill, and after Painite, she'd stopped thinking the Negaverse would leave her completely alone as a civilian.

She'd started to care. Care about which side did what, care about why people were fighting a useless war that left more dead than not. It was like suddenly being thrown into politics with weapons, and yet still trying to keep your hands clean of blood. It was impossible.

Now, she was leaning against a tree, smoke billowing out of her mouth as she focused on a grizzly man that radiated Order and was not wearing a skirt, so she discounted his being a senshi. Was he going home, was he on patrol? Did he hate the Negaverse? Did he like his outfit? What was he sworn to protect?

Camelot felt an Order aura nearby, and thankfully missed her comment about his attire. It was for the best, as he got that kind of thing a lot and each little comment chipped at his confidence. Not his ability to do his job, just his average, run of the mill self confidence in appearance. That and comments about his age.

He was a little sensitive, maybe. It came in waves. Sometimes he felt like he could handle anything anyone said, because he did hear it a lot, and other times he felt like a little baby who couldn't take anyone teasing him.

Life was hard.

He approached her, tilting his head. Was she watching him?

"Hello," he said, his demeanor easy and calm because she was a knight, and that always put him at ease. He trusted them, sometimes a little too unconditionally, but he also felt immediately kinship. "My name is Camelot. Are you on patrol?" He'd never seen her in the area before, though it wasn't like he patrolled every second of every day.

Myrkviðr's laugh was a surprised, delighted ring. And she withdrew the cigarette from her mouth to take a long, second look at the man.

"Hi." It was hard not to let the corner's of her mouth curl in amusement.

Oh, this was priceless. He really was plucked out of a history book. AS a civilian, she would have thought him the harmless, crazy man who started to believe his cosplaying one day and never went back.

"Myrkviðr," she answered. "Can't say I am." He wasn't worth keeping the cigarette out of her mouth anymore. "You haven't been sworn to protect the round table, have you?"

She might die.

Camelot looked a little... pouty.

"No... not the round table. Well, not in this age, maybe. I protect the innocent people that live here, and do what I can to maintain and promote peace... ah... why are you powered up, then, if not to patrol? Are you new?"

He reminded himself again that he had never seen her before, and had never heard that name before. It was complicated enough that it would have stuck in his head, if so. Though he'd already forgotten how to pronounce it.

Crap.

He shuffled his feet awkwardly. It was one of those low confidence nights, he could feel it, but he tried to look proud of himself and his attire. He was a Knight, after all, and he'd earned it. He believed in what he fought for, as well, and that wouldn't be taken from him. Even by his own doubt and goofiness.

(( I am sorry, Camelot. She is not going to make this easy for you. ))

The more Camelot pouted, the more the brunette grinned. The next draw was a delighted one, and she tilted her head at him. It was a stunningly elaborate outfit. Were they all decked out like that upon knighthood? That shield looked heavy.

"New. . . ish?" she offered. How new was new? A few months. A few years? Until you lost your left arm and had a scar over your eye? Hopefully, she'd stay forever new.

"These clothes wash themselves." A shrug, the real answer: "It's safer in this body." Someone was out to get her civilian form. No one was out to get her Order self. Well, not yet. The energy signature was low enough most left her alone. She ran faster. Answer: spend more time in safe body than in body someone wants to slaughter. It was the perfect crime, really. Only the thousands of dollars were unfortunately absent.

"And before you ask, the answer is no." The cigarette was dropped and she ground it underneath her foot. She was not going to join him on patrol. Or patrol on her own. Or even consider the idea of a patrol. "Where's your sword? Or are you going to throw your ring at them?" She pointed at his awkwardly held hands.

(He will just keep pouting and hope it works out.)

it was true. He had banged up and bled on his armor more than a few times, and the whole outfit always looked brand new every time he powered up. It was one of the perks of their magic, and while the war was intense and difficult and made life a hell sometimes... there were some nice bonuses.

Auto-cleaning clothes. Super strength. Being able to jump like crazy. Trips to fantastic worlds. Hidden identities.

"No...?"

He didn't seem to get her meaning, though he nodded and offered her a warm smile. Of course he knew she was declining to go patrolling with him, but he was trying to pretend like that definitely had not been what he was going to say next. While struggling to think of something else to go with.

"Well, Ah. I don't have a sword, just my shield. It's a good enough defense, though, and can do damage when it needs to. I try not to fight, though, if I can avoid it. Not always possible, but ah."

The brunette was more than happy to elaborate for the Knight of the Not-Round Table. Clearly, the table had been square, not round. Wasn't there some legend about the table and its orientation? Hell, maybe it had been a triangle table.

"Any tips or tricks for avoiding fights?"

As a civilian, it was a much easier task. Don't wear nice clothes in the bad neighborhoods. Stay out of the gang-areas. Keep your body relaxed, wave to everyone who had eyes on you, let them know you saw them. Don't threaten them, definitely don't embarrass them.

Almost none were out to kill you.

Not so in the case of crazy-b***h and some of her friends. Not so in the case of those Negaverse who had, as best she could tell, gone rogue and started to sap energy from the unfortunate, take the starseeds of those even less.

"They didn't give me a shield or a ring," she offered in explanation of wanting to avoid fights.

"Well, ah."

He looked thoughtful. How to avoid fights. He had never really put it into this kind of a frame before. Offering tips, and all that. He was not just avoiding fights, after all, he was trying to find peace and to convince the negaverse of the benefits to purifying. Or that it was, at least, an option for them, whether they believed him or not. Sometimes it did lead to fighting, and that was always inevitable when one found the wrong negaverse soldier.

Painite was one of the ones that would never listen, and always seemed spoiling for a fight.

"I guess I just try to talk first. I don't mean harm to the Negaverse if they don't attack me first: if we can start a conversation rather than come to blows, that's my best case scenario." He was shaking his shield a bit, just out of idle nervous energy he didn't even seem to notice.

"But if you mean just avoiding them completely, I don't know. Chaos has a very good way of finding us when we're at our most vulnerable. Instead of avoiding them, I find it's better to just find the company of other Ordered people, for safety."
