Candidate… Lesson? The Touching had only brought into full relief the state of the hatching sands for Wykla. The eggs and their mother crowded onto the last dry sands. Watching as the candidates waded to the eggs she’d been moved to action. After the Touching, Wykla had gone to see a few people. Permission was given and she swung into action.
Word was left at the candidate barracks, that there was to be a special job for any candidate who wished to participate. Participation wasn’t required. There was also a hint that there would be the chance to be around the eggs. Starting time would be bright and early.
The next morning Wykla found herself standing again outside the Hatching sands. She stood with a hand on her hip. What candidate could resist being around the eggs more? She waited until it seemed no more were going to show up.
“Alright candidates listen up!” Wykla scanned the candidates before her. “You’re here today to help dry out the hatching sands. Since I’m sure you don’t want to be standing ankle deep in water on Hatching Day.” She arched a brow at them ironically. “While we will be working in the Sands, you are not to go too close to the eggs or Cepheith.”
Now she brought attention to a pile of baskets nearby. “We’ll be using these to carry water and sand out. The water as I’m sure you noticed yesterday has no way to escape the Sands, and the sands themselves need to be dried. Dump buckets of water where it’ll drain away. In the sun we’ll have blankets laid out. Spread the sand out on them to dry. Any questions?”Easy lesson this time guys! Goal: To dry the Sands for Cepheith and the eggs! This takes place after the Touching and before the Hatching. It’ll close when the Hatching starts.
- Candidates are not allowed too close to the clutch. - Non-candidates are welcome to help, mingle, or tend the blankets. - This is a lesson. That means you need 5 posts to qualify for the 0.25 EXP.
Candidates roll 1d6 to see how much sand or water you remove. 1- What are you doing splashing around? All you got is water in your bucket! 2- You manage to scoop up a tiny bit of sand along with all your water. 3- Put your back into it, that bucket’s only a quarter full. 4- Not bad, a half and half bucket. 5- Is your bucket getting heavy with three-quarters sand? 6- A full bucket. Woot!

When word went around that there was a special job for Candidates, Tacelon excused himself from his current task to go help. There was likely some reason that it was for Candidates, though he couldn't think why. The hint at being near eggs probably had something to do with it, but he didn't need that encouragement to do what he'd been asked to.
Finding that the job was at the Hatching Grounds gave him an idea of what kind of task it might be, so he wasn't surprised when he was given a bucket and told the task. It was certainly necessary, for the comfort of Candidates, queen and hatchlings alike. So be bent down to scoop up some sand.
As he straightened and started sloshing out of the Grounds, he saw that his bucket held more water than sand. Oh well, getting the water out seemed to be as much the purpose as drying the sands. So he went to dump out the water and spread the sand to dry.

Niyx while she hadn't exactly been in the most spectacular mood the day of touching was nonetheless more then willing to help the clearly stranded eggs. The very idea of dragons flailing about in sandy water left her shuddering. So it didn't take much prompting from Wykla when she showed up to convince her to grab and bucket and get to work. Glancing over at the distant eggs she waded into the water.
She didn't do too bad for her first bucket managing to haul out half water, half sand as she dragged her catch out to dump the water and dry the many golden granules on the awaiting blankets.

With the sun at it's back the shadow of a rather large dragon fell over the work station casting candidate and master alike in it's shade. Back winging gracefully a very distinct silver dragon came to land in the deeper waters of the other empty hatching sands perfectly content to keep a wide berth and a couple of walls between him and a very likely irate gold. From his back Devith's rather infamous red-headed rider waved a greeting to the group a broad mischievous grin gracing her lips even as her dragon shifted beneath her letting out a derisive snort at the water he was standing in. Without a moment's notice Device began to wade for the drier ground near the entrance where the little group had begun there work sending ripples and waves through the water around him.
"So a little flit told me you lot might welcome an extra set of hands in draining the hatching sands!" She called down to the group sliding down her Devith's dusky side the moment the silver reached land. Shaking his paws off not unlike an unhappy feline Devith settled down near the group watching the work with a distinct interest.
Really Mine when you mentioned there was too much water at first I thought you were being silly. This gunk however is not water. It's sandy, silty, dirty and I absolutely will not stand for it to be around the eggs. Really we want to welcome the hatchlings! Not drown them! Devith rumbled in distaste casting the soaked sands a rather withering glance before turning back to Hekate even as her ever present flock taking the oppertunity descended on her filling her minds with images of buckets and water ripples and FUN! Sighing and shaking her head Hekate lifted a hand shushing her firelizards and whatever strays had chosen to cling to her for the day good naturedly and scratched Devith's eyeridge.
"Don't worry it won't be like this for long." She assured him hiking up her wrap pants and tying them off above her knees peeling away her boots to leave by her dragon as she grabbed a bucket. A bucket which Countess her little hyper active green thought was a wonderful new hiding spot and had to be quickly shooed out of. Giving a mock salute to Wykla and a nod to the candidates Hekate waded in managing to haul up about 2/3'd of a bucket full in her first try and she waded back towards the drying point.
While rumors might abound about the woman's character none could deny Hekate was always there to lend a shoulder when hard work was to be had and the Weyr in disrepair.

Niyx was really trying. Really, but the sudden descent of a silver and his rider distracted her and when she pulled up her bucket it only had a little sand in it and was mostly water. Trying to hide her blush she instead shook herself off pouring out the water and then the sand in it's drying spot and waded back in determined to keep her eyes on getting the job done this time. Sides maybe if she asked nicely the new rider would let her touch her dragon. It seemed so strange to think that something as big as a silver could come from such little eggs and glancing over at the distant clutch she couldn't help, but wonder if any of them housed a silver as well.

Naanash yawned, not fully awake though the tea was helping. Harbinger was curled on his shoulder, the little queens mood somewhat subdued in the early hours , her tail looping around his neck and eyes somewhat tinged with blue. He whistled slightly, using the tune to help wake him up as he shifted the bucket into the water, hearing the scrape of sand and water and dragged the full bucket out. Well, half water, half sand, either way.
He drained the water and then spread out the sand on the blanket.

Corloss was never one to pass up extra work, even if it meant being tired and uncomfortable. And at the Touching, he'd been struck by how vulnerable the eggs looked, sheltered on their little island of sand and surrounded by a silty sea. Even if the eggs themselves stayed dry, would wet sand hold the necessary heat as well as dry sand?
Needless to say, he took up a bucket and joined in the bucket brigade as soon as he could. There were already a couple people there, and hopefully more would join in soon. It was going to be a long, hard, thankless job if not.
His first attempt got more water than sand in his bucket; still, any water removed from the hatching grounds was still better than none. Hauling the bucketload outside, he poured the water off and then dumped the sand onto one of the blankets before heading back inside for more.

Zarike
How. Lucky. Was. He?! How lucky was Zarike to not only have the most amazing day in his young life happen yesterday, but to be invited BACK onto the Sands a second time before the actual Hatching?! The twelve turn old lad was practically floating on a cloud of giddy excitement.
Or rather, splashing once again through the sand, delighting as only a young child can in the squishy feeling of his feet sinking in and his sandals near slipping off with every step. Sharing in his excitement was a green firelizard, who despite her interest in play, was giving the mother gold a wide berth. Terra trilled and skimmed the water, searching in vain for any small fishes or creatures that usually inhabited wet places.
Zarike went through the motions of scooping water but really, he was just trying to inch closer to the eggs. He was still in wet sand after all... He just wanted another look...
His bucket was forgotten.

Vaail lifted his bucket, peered inside and shrugged. Not the best scoop but it didn't make much sense to just dump the water back into the sands. He walked out, and blatantly dumped the not even half full bucket of water outside in the grass and walked back in.

Rynsemth gave a displeased noise as they walked through the water, the young black atypical glanced around and hummed slightly at Devith before craning his neck down.
It might actually do better if you watch the blankets and tell us when the sands dry. Wen said looking over the grounds. Rynsemth weight would raise the water up higher but it really was the sand that was the problem. "Good morning Wykla. I heard you need some help."
Rynsemth gave a sound and turned to keep an eye on the blankets. Playing with sand was a drier alternative then standing in water.
"Rynsemth would volunteer but the buckets are a bit small for dragons to manipulate. So he is going to make sure the sand dries on the blankets." Wen took a bucket, ducking it and followed his Black out with a half and half container to dump.

Ailin
Ailin was relieved that Wykla had thought to do something, even if it involved him doing more physical labor. He tried for the most part to keep himself from staring overlong at the eggs though. As before, his brush with the hatchlings minds made him crave that connection in spite of the dangers and changes that it represented.
He would never Impress though. He was in no way suited to be a rider. His self esteem was shot, or rather, was it that his idea of what the world was and should be had been crushed? Ailin didn't think hard on it, retreating ever further from casual socializing and into the solitary company of his flits and his flute.
Faced again with the eggs and the Sands in such a state it was hard to avoid such a negative frame of mind. The sharp features of the rapidly growing young man were pinched in a pensive expression as he dug his bucket into the ground at his feet, his movements a sharp mockery of what was his usual quiet grace.

His second try was a little more successful than the first. He still got as much water as sand in the bucket, but there were more people helping now... and dragons around as well. Corloss kept his head down and tried not to stare too much.

Wake up, there is work to do.
...sleepy...
We have a duty mine. You've had plenty of sleep.
...warm... Dizzian rolled and buried herself deep within the pile of blankets on her bed.
Don't even try that. Courath's eyes whirled in amusement as she peered in the small weyr's window. If you forget, we're in Southern. It's always warm. You're too hot under all of those blankets now get up.
"Whaaaaaaa." Dizzian kicked and fussed at her blankets, having a mock fit as she dragged her groggy arse out of bed and into some pants. "Stuff your duty. It's too hot to work."
I thought you were complaining it was too cold? Courath snorted with laughter as a plush firelizard sailed out the window and bounced off her nose. In less than a second it was followed by the angry screech of real firelizards as Dizzian's trio darted outside and began to squabble over their adopted flock member, each trying to pick the toy up themselves to carry it back inside.
"Ugh... FINE. What are we doing at this thrice betweened hour?" Dizzian shrugged into a sleeveless shirt and looked at her riding leathers.
It's mid morning at the earliest and you won't want those. Candidates are bailing out the Hatching Sands and we've been welcomed to help. Devith and his are already there.
"It's not even fun work?" Dizzian ran a hand through her hair and stepped outside, climbing onto Courath's bare back. "Is her boyfriend there?"
No.
"Fine. Let's go." It took all of five seconds for Courath to take off, glide to the sands, and land among the dragon stands high above the candidates and dragons already below. She bugled a greeting to all present.

A second time on the Sands? Oh yes, excitement indeed!
Abandoning his boots outside of the hatching ground and rolling up his pant legs, Sahar joined the others filing into the area with bucket and blanket in hand. Like the others, he split off a way from the main group in order to do what he was suppose to do-
Only to mis-judge just how soupy some of the patches of water actually were. His foot sunk into the sands, the tall candidate was pitched forward with a yelp and splash.

As Tacelon headed back inside for more sand, his flit decided to swoop down to see if he could help. Tacelon initially blanched at the sight of his little brown in the Hatching Grounds. Flits weren't allowed, he didn't want to upset the queen, especially not when she was already unhappy. But a look around proved that there were already other flits in the area, congregating around their owners or playing in the water. If they hadn't been sent away, maybe Echo could stay. So he left the flit try and help, though he wasn't sure what the small fellow could do.
Echo merely surveyed the area for the moment as Tacelon leaned down to scoop more wet sand. This bucket came up much heaver than the last, and a glance inside proved it was mostly full of sand. That was better, then. Shuffling a bit from the weight, he carried it outside to tip a bit of the water off, then spread the sand on the blankets.
