For some reason or another Ofelia hadn't been able to access the haunted house as of late. The men at the portal kept turning her back, claiming it was unsafe, and even though Ofelia had clearly stated that unsafe was the best time to go they simply turned her away and then locked the door behind them. A deep frown had worked itself onto her features as she sulked her way through the grounds of Deus and every now and then she'd swing her head to scowl at one of the unlucky few who happened to pass her by. It was all really a bluff, she wasn't upset enough to lash out, but her uneasiness at not being able to get out and do her job nagged at the back of her skull just as badly as the silence did.
Which mean it was more or less annoying and she needed to do something before she recklessly challenged a person to a spar and sent them to the infirmary in a body bag. The body count she'd racked up since becoming a Hunter was nothing pleasant though it would make for good bragging rights should she ever need to spit it out. Still that was all pointless and the teen found herself heading to the cafeteria. There wasn't a real desire to cook her own food today since every now and then she wanted to eat someone else's meals and as she waded into the room she looked around for any and all familiar faces. Ofelia had grown tired of eating alone, perhaps someone would offer her company?
Today at the very least she didn't have dried blood splattered on her face and arms and clothes and she had pulled the last of the sticks and whatever else from her mane of hair.

Melvin was sitting in the cafeteria, drinking juice and eating a salad as he read a book. All the coffee and late nights had murdered his stomach and he had a bad case of heartburn. He was trying to eat and drink light today so he could indulge in a lot of coffee tomorrow.
At seeing Ofelia, looking better than she typically did, he glanced up and wave a curt wave before going back to reading.

Ofelia's expression brightened as she happened to catch both Melvin and his wave all in one go. The young woman had assumed she'd be eating alone and that was okay, maybe she would have taken a tray somewhere and climbed a tree with it, but since Melvin was here now he was going to have to suffer through her company and the weird and awkward game known as 'catching up'.
A simple meal of a vegetable sandwich and some water was selected as she grabbed a set and moved over, stopping in front of the familiar blondie. "Mind if Ah join ya?" It was always polite to ask even though she was already sitting herself down across from him. Or at least her tray had been set down.

"I never mind company." He told her, bookmarking his book with a piece of paper and closing it. Reaching over for his cup, he took a sip of juice and watched her. She didn't look as bad as she sometimes did, meaning she just woke up or she hadn't been doing anything as physically destroying as usual.
"How have you been?"

Ofelia beamed happily at Mevlin and plopped into the chair across, her face never losing its grin all through the process. "Been good! Mostly been hauntin' the....uh..Haunted House." That sounded so lame even inside her head but Ofelia said it anyway. "S'where Ah was assigned after 'comin' a full Hunter, so Ah get ta slaughter things on a regular basis an' it's workin' out well fer me." Ofelia explained, sort of. "How are things on your end?"
From the way his diet looked, not...good? He seemed to be barely eating and, considering Ofelia hadn't been around to cook and shove meals at him, maybe he wasn't eating? Not her place to judge.

"I received approval to work on my own project testing artifacts. I've been working on that mostly and helping other people in life with their projects." Namely Rin, but also helping Rep as he was just introduced into Life.
"Aside from that, nothing much else aside from standard training and helping out the other departments." He did receive a promotion to a intermediate, but that was obvious with the jacket.
"What are you assigned to do in the Haunted House? Just killing what you find?"

"Pretty much. Ah guess Ah'm supposed ta map stuff out but Ah mostly jus' go in an' wreck whatever comes mah way." Ofelia shrugged her shoulders and poked a fork into the whatever-it-was in front of her. Maybe this was a bad idea, she should have made her own food. "Prevents me from goin' after the trainees, they said. Guess they don't wanna have two people in sun who enjoy cripplin' others fer fun." The redhead shrugged again at that statement and tried to push the "food" into her mouth. It didn't even make it past her lips before she just set the fork down and frowned at everything. Stupid nasty food.
Of course then she heard Melvin talk about artifacts. "Arti-what?" Clearly she'd never heard of them or hadn't been paying attention at all when stuff came about regarding them. It would make sense, she'd seen many hunters with weird things as of late, but the redhead herself didn't have one personally. Maybe she should look into getting one if she actually found out what they were and what they did. "Whuzzat?"

At the tone of chopping up trainees, Melvin winced. He had to deal with a lot of people going into the infirmary seeing as he was a member of Life, and he never liked anyone casually mentioning the injury rate on the island. If anything, he always hoped to prevent such accidents from happening as much as he could, but the lack of seriousness most everyone displayed when talking about it just greatly upset him.
Frowning, he breathed out. "I guess that is a good thing. I never did well in the Haunted House, but I'm not a Sun. I do like not having to patch up more people than needed when working in the Infirmary, though I don't think you are half as bad as Rep." He didn't hear too much about Ofelia hurting much of anyone aside herself.
At the question, Melvin lit up a bit. "Artifacts. They are ancient Halloween items that are guarded and protected. Many hunters have been taking teams and finding where they are hidden, but it's not a easy task and takes luck and time at a great deal of risk. A few have come back successfully, and I've been working on a database to record as much as possible about them. Information related to them could possibly lead to better items that can give all hunters a better edge in future missions. I'm hoping that we can use them on better runics, but I'm only just collecting data right now."
Melvin reached into his back pocket, pulling out a blueish handkerchief and showing her. Little metal coins hands on the fridge of the cloth, and the fabric was blue and seemed to swirl as if there was a life ocean pattern. "I was lucky after going into different places over and over again. I kept failing and nearly died, but Leon helped me. This is my artifact. So far it just gives me a slight edge during fighting, but every little bit helps." He said.

"....Ah kinda want one." Ofelia thought back to a certain spar she had....and how someone had cheated by using one. "Ya said people go an' find these? Maybe it'd come in handy wit' mah job an' such." Ofelia thought about just what it would take if some people made it back successfully. Some didn't always mean all. Ofelia had pretty good odds though because if anything she was hella hard to kill. "Yers is really pretty." She finally added after a moment or two of looking at it.
It really was nice, and powerful probably if Melvin was actually using one. Ofelia had never taken him as the type to use something to boost because she didn't take him as the type to fight. Everything had to change with time though right? "Also ya should come wit'me ta the house sometime. Could always use a friendly hand when the odds aren't really in mah favor no more." She grinned and poked at the nasty food. "Other than all that though how ya been? Really been, not the general 'all good here' shtick."

"It is good to get someone who's strong enough to support you. I had to take Jerry and then Leon after. It was exhausting, and I doubt I helped them at all." Most of the time he served as defense and distraction, and he felt they could have all been more successful a lot more quickly if Melvin was even remotely strong.
"You're house?" He questioned, before realizing that Ofelia meant the Haunted House that she was claiming as her stomping grounds. "Oh. Well, I only went there once and was horrible at it. Nearly got myself killed. I haven't even won a spar on the island. I doubt I'd be any good out there aside from healing." There was also the worry of putting himself in more places where his life was at risk.
"Oh, just tired. Been working a lot in the labs to keep myself busy. I really want to make sure I have something to present to the leads when the time comes so I don't get pushed back to running Life errands again and treated like a rookie. I haven't done much else. Some training but not much else." He really felt he was better suited in the labs due to his continued failures when it came to fighting.

"Trainin' is always good. Lately Ah've been....not really trainin'? Fer some reason there's jus' no satisfaction in hittin' targets that neither move nor hit back." Ofelia sighed a little. She had given her time at the training dummies more than once or twice, in fact she'd done it lots of times when she wasn't in the House or trying to sleep, but the thrill of striking someone that didn't scream or try and hit back had rendered the whole experience....boring. Perhaps it was because Ofelia preferred hands on activity or perhaps it was because she had just gotten so used to actual combat that everything in the middle seemed too weak. "Ah dunno if Ah've gotten stronger though 'cause s'kinda hard ta test it out."
Though Melvin had said he didn't want to go into the Haunted House because he thought he wouldn't be useful? Ofelia frowned at that, her face literally frowning down, and she shook her head. "Ya went in once ta save mah life an' fought off a zombie-dog, iffin Ah recall correctly. That makes a lot'a sense ta me an' sometimes Ah could use a healer while in there." The redhead happened to recall a certain offhand incident where she'd run into an unhappy group of horsemen that had her running with so many open and bleeding she wasn't sure she'd make it out okay. Naturally she had because she was here but whatever. "Ah won't press ya inta it but yer company would always be welcomed in. It'd be nice ta have a familiar face ta talk wit'."
Thoughts about the artifacts and getting one weighed in at the bottom of her brain. There likey was something involving research and, despite Ofelia's vastly improved reading skills (thanks Jason!) she probably wouldn't get very far on her own. "An' if yer feelin' unsure 'bout the house then, how 'bout helpin' me get an artifact? Ah know it sounds way harder but....Ah've got a feelin' yer someone Ah could seriously count on in'a pinch."
Also Melvin was like one of the very few friends she had but she couldn't tell him that.
