Shutting the door, Melvin took a breath and stepped out to see where Jordan went to tell him he was out of the room and could go back to see Rep. No doubt the man might want company. As much as Rep was the sort to glue himself to a bedside to one of his own men.

Jordan wasn't far off, and taking a step, he jabbed a gloved thumb behind him. "I'm done talking."

Jordan had gone down the hall to the nurses' station and retrieved a cup of coffee. Now he was leaning against the wall with the cup in his hand, eyes closed, looking very tired. When Melvin spoke, he opened his eyes with a jolt, looking startled and lost for half a moment before he got his expression under control again. "You okay?" he asked.

He looked a bit shaken by the question. Did he look not okay? He had been a bit surprised and uneasy by the sudden hand holding Rep gave him, but he tried to brush it off.

"I'm fine. I'm just never really happy to see another hunter in the Infirmary with uncertain health because someone snapped during a spar. Another person going too far during a spar and snapping past that. A lot of people need control and therapy." Which returned back to what Jordan, Melvin, and Ro had talked about.

"Are you okay?" He asked, knowing that Jordan had spent enough time in the Infirmary for one thing or another. It also helped with the fact Melvin wasn't too thrilled with the man because of his conduct before.

Jordan nodded a little. "More than we know, I suspect." He looked over at the door, unwilling to go back into the room just yet. He'd seen too much of the infirmary this year already.

In response to the question, he shrugged a little. "Okay enough." He hesitated. "Sorry I yelled at you this morning. I was tired and I lost my temper."

"I'm surprised you can yell considering how polite you seem to be. I just don't like you making assumptions about me. We rarely talk, Jordan." He said, not caring that Jordan had yelled, but what he had yelled at him.

"I was irritable too. That was my first time in jail and Rep isn't a pleasant cellmate. Neither is Jerry."

Jordan took a sip of his coffee. "If I knew you better, I'd have more information to work with," he said, eyeing Melvin, "and I'd be less likely to be mistaken." He put on a slight smile. "That'd require you being willing to talk to me, though."

"I would imagine not," he commented, recalling how tightly wound Melvin had looked when they arrived. At the time, he'd been too tightly wound himself to give it much attention, but he'd noted it.

While Melvin could suggest Jordan talk to Rep about Melvin, he thought better of it. Rep knew a lot more than anyone else, aside from Rin, and he didn't want what they knew to be common knowledge.

"Then I guess we need to talk more than just passing coffee breaks. Maybe when we start work on cleaning out that mess of a building or whenever you feel like it. We only ever did go on a walk once or twice." Jordan, despite his willingness to be too polite, was still saner than a lot of people on the island and much better dressed.

'I don't know if you're just used to how open Rep is, but I'm not that way. I barely see you so even if I spoke up more, I don't think that would be enough time or information for you to go about profiling me. I don't care if you shout and get angry at me to my face. I prefer it. I just don't want everyone calling me some cold, emotionless b*****d. It's getting really old." His tone was getting a bit more heated then he liked, and so he took a breath and relaxed.

"I wouldn't mind. Intelligent conversation is the exception rather than the rule around here," Jordan said, and took another sip of coffee, grimacing at the taste. It was stale and bitter, barely drinkable, but he wasn't dealing with this - any of it - without coffee, both for the soothingly familiar effects of caffeine and for the psychological reassurance of having something to keep his hands busy with.

He shrugged again. "Everyone makes assumptions and fills in conclusions based on the information presented. If you want to call that profiling, I guess I can't stop you." He gave Melvin a curious look. "If you don't want people calling you a cold, emotionless b*****d, why are you presenting that way as a public facade?"

Melvin frowned at such a accusation. "Public facade? What have I shown to everyone around? If I'm cold and emotionless, why would I get everyone together for Thanksgiving? Why would I talk to anyone or go out of my way to see if they were okay? I don't ignore people or lock myself in my lab. What part of that makes everyone think I'm cold and emotionless?" He honestly had no idea why this was becoming a common idea with everyone. It was honestly frustrating.

"You know Rep better than most. Do you think he'd associate with cold and emotionless people?"

"From what I've seen, you either don't see or don't care when people are getting uncomfortable with the line of conversation you're pushing; that implies a certain coldness. As for emotionless, you're extremely reluctant to share any kind of personal details, which makes it difficult for others to empathize, especially when you're failing or refusing to empathize with them. You're often abrupt and forceful in your conversations. Do you see why people might start getting those ideas, especially if you refuse to let them close enough to get other ideas?" Jordan studied Melvin curiously. Trying to figure out what made Melvin tick was a good distraction from the dull ache of emotional pain that waited in the background.

"I don't," he answered. "And he likes you, so you and I are going to have to come to some sort of agreement, even if you decide you can't stand me. You're his friend, and I happen to think that's a good thing. Take that as you will."

"Oh so I should be overly polite to the point where you have pointless conversation and learn nothing about a person? How are you going to help anyone when you're not willing to press forward in what you want to know? I never turned Ro's arm to answer me. He had his own free will. He could have told me to shut up. Conversation is between two people. If one person stops, then conversation stops. He decided to continue." If that was what Jordan was taking it form, then Melvin has his explanation. "

"Considering you live with Rep, who isn't the most tactful at times, I wouldn't think you'd lecture me on being more polite. Just because I don't pour my life story out doesn't mean I lack all emotion." This was getting very annoying to talk about. Now he wished he had some coffee.
PostPosted: Wed Apr 24, 2013 12:47 pm

"Pressing someone for what you want to know puts them on the defensive and makes them resistant," Jordan pointed out. "Taking the time to make polite conversation and establish a rapport with the person you're talking to encourages them to open up and share information voluntarily." He gave Melvin a sharp look. "You did the social equivalent of twisting his arm in that case, dude. You put him in a position where he could either answer your uncomfortable questions or be rude to you. Many people are socialized to avoid rudeness at all costs, even if that means putting up with intrusive actions or conversations. However, they'll probably then avoid the source of that discomfort."

He shrugged. "I'm not necessarily telling you you need to be more polite. But you wanted to know where people are getting these ideas about you that you feel aren't true, and I'm telling you what you're showing them to give them those ideas."

Melvin crossed his arms now. "So you're saying I'm not socialized and I should just talk about nothing until I ask questions?" Melvin did not like that fact you though you considered him un-socialized, Jordan. Not one bit.
PostPosted: Wed Apr 24, 2013 1:13 pm

"No. I'm saying that your socialization was clearly different, and that this is where people are getting those assumptions about you." Jordan gave Melvin a long, even look. "You asked, dude."

"I did ask. It's how I figure things out. I'm not throwing a book at you for answering." He continued. " I guess I'll lead up to my questions a bit better if everyone is feeling cornered by them." This was what he was taking from what Jordan was telling him. Lead up with simple conversation to nurse their comfort levels before he could actually ask what he wanted and have meaningful conversation.

"I don't want people avoiding me." Or calling him cold.
