Unbeknown to Stormy, the library would soon become very, very familiar to her. For now, though, the room was a vast repertoire of digital knowledge and the familiar smell of paper and binding glue, things she wished she had more of her in her life: but for now, an hour or two would do. Her copy of The Grimm Brother's Fairytales could only hold her for so long, even though there were enough stories in the thing to keep her mentally busy all day long and then some.

The trainee plopped down with a curious book on mythology she had been interested in, wondering how much of it would end up being literal history rather than legend. A small mug of freshly made tea sat by her right arm, which she sipped occasionally as she flipped through the pages. Pretty pictures . . . Scary details, but pretty pictures.

"Vhat is this?" came a familiar voice over her shoulder.

Lucky had gotten really good at moving quietly, and even in his self-imposed semi-exile, continued to frequent the library in search of what little information he could glean from the available books about... many things. Including what he had seen almost flash past in front of Stormy. He reached out quickly to hold the page even as it was flipped past.

The page in question was taken up by an old ink drawing in the shape of a perfect circle. Almost. There was a blot of black ink at the top, rendering it not quite the symbol he'd expected.

She took a full three seconds to pop out of the realm of Viking mythology and turn to Lucky with a blink. Oh. Oh hi, finger. Where were you . . .

Oh. It was an O. Oh.

"It's cropped up a few times, I think. Not sure what, though . . ." She made a musing sound (was there a connection to the funny symbol on his hand?), then realized maybe she ought to greet the life hunter like a normal person. "'Sup, Puppy? Are you researching something too?"

"I thought vas... something else," he spoke quickly and dismissively, trying not to draw too much attention to himself. It could never be that easy to get his answers. Ah well.

"Ah. Still curious of vhat is..." He let the page go, and it flipped over to the next one with a light crinkle of paper. The other side of the page had no images, only writing, in a strange, even more foreign sort of English than he usually saw. "This, can you read, Burzliwy? I cannot make of it anything."

Stormy made a face because she so knew Lucky was looking into a specific letter between N and P. But if he didn't want to talk about it, she wasn't going to pry - not yet at any rate. Mentally making a bookmark to look into it for him later like a good friend, she nodded and turned to the page with a squint to scan its contents.

"Lesee . . . I was reading up on things called Artifacts which pop up a lot in mythology apparently?" she said. "Things of power associated with different figures . . . Apparently there are a couple of areas Hunters have scoped out before?" She tapped some of the markings made on the page, names scratched out in past moments of book-defiling. "Seems like they're rich in this stuff! The book warns that it's hard, but I checked the database a while ago, and some of them got artifacts even as beginning trainees." There was a hidden plea in that sentence.

"Ciekawy, ciekawy." He readjusted his glasses, staring at the unreadable text and back to Stormy. The fact that other trainees had found them seemed... promising? "It vould not be bad idea... to look for such thing as these. Could answer some question I have to study."

And in a low voice, only to Stormy: "And I vould not oppose to get out from here. If only for short time..."

Pleased as punch he was interested, Stormy said perhaps a bit too loudly, "Go out, I don't know what you're talking about, oh you mean the beach OKAY LET'S GO TO THE BEACH~" And then winked. Surreptitiously.

She paused, figured out the words as best she could, then said, "Nasze zamówienia są jasne." With a salute Stormy pushed her chair back and stood, stretching. "The cavern we're looking for has a portal in Halloween, and the book recommends we . . . go without golems," the trainee added in an undertone as she led them out of the library, looking a smidge worried. But that was the fun of it, huh? Risking their lives. Oh God, she hoped she would get used to this . . .

"It's also gonna be wet in there. And apparently there's a curse? Hmmm."

Lucky might have facepalmed a little bit.

"Być ostrożnym." He followed her out, hiding his hands in his pockets. "Theory makes sense. I have read of this effect. Is can be survived for small time... ve must just be... vatching of clock."

"Vhat secret treasure vould not be cursed?" he sighed. "Is vorth look. Is vorth small look. Let us find portal...?"

Yeah, no kidding . . . All that Fear on them straight? It'd be like getting pounded by attacks constantly. The trainee fussed over her appearance and tied her hair back with the ribbon she kept handy, then tied her scarf into a makeshift bow around her waist with the tails as short as she could manage - anything to help her not get tripped up.

Stormy shivered a bit and took Lucky's hand for security as they left the labs and slipped through the portal, wincing upon first arrival. The light was so dim in Halloween, how could they stand it? and it was markedly cooler here than on the tropical island which was both nice and a bit of a shocker. The outlying area seemed to have paced them in a thing forest of sorts, the outline of buildings several blocks away - just on the edge of urban and thankfully not within prying eyesight. "This place is fascinating . . . maybe later we could do a scouting mission somewhere here?" she asked airily. "So the book said portals have been popping up around here, so we just ought to look . . ."

Her first didn't take long to appear, but stepping into it only brought her to . . . another island? Wait, in the human world? Well no, this made sense: Monster's Inc. and all. She skipped back out before the sun could make her sweat too much.

Lucky blinked as they stepped into darkness. It was like a silent buzzing, the feeling that something was slowly pushing against him. It felt like there was nothing more than a thin film between him and... well, what else could it be? They were surrounded by FEAR. And trees.

The first portal Lucky found smelled like seawater and hot sand. He took a careful step inside, only to find himself standing outside a rickety shack in the middle of the ocean. Something about it seemed unsettling... he was quick to escape back into the darkness of Halloween.

He glanced Stormy's way. "Any luck?"

She hesitated to answer his question and raised a finger for him to wait. A new portal appeared next to her old one!

. . . And led to the same place. A different place? whatever, it was an island and it was not what they were looking for.

"Nope!" she chirped, wiping at her forehead as she exited back into Halloween. Her shield was starting to sizzle almost.

This portal led to a picturesque island, though somewhat boring. Not a single cursed looking building in sight. Not a single building anywhere, period. Uninhabited.

With a sigh, he slipped back into Halloween.

Stormy stepped into another, saw it was yet another sandy beach, and then came back with a serious look.

"Lucky?"

Pause for brevity.

"I think I broke my portal."

Another island, equally pretty to look at, equally a waste of his time to stand around. He shook the sand out of his shoes and retreated back out of the portal.

"This is not exact science..."

Another portal, another beach she would have loved to lounge on. Or take long walks on just so she could put that in her next dating profile.

"No seriously I think I broke it bad."
