If there was one thing Melinda hated the most, it was sitting in the waiting room of the hospital. Glancing down at her watch, she pulls on her pink skirt as she found herself frowning. She was here for her checkup after her fall awhile back, that landed her on bed rest and being unable to do much. Personally, she didn't think she needed to get check out, as she figured she was fine.
Tapping her heel on the ground, she sighs before she leans back in her seat "Should have just cancelled this check up..." she grumbled softly as she pulls out her cell phone.
As it was, she knew she be missing class.
Glancing up as a nurse pauses near her, she frowns when it wasn't her name called.
Five more minutes, before she says screw it and leaves.

It was common knowledge among the residents that nobody in the right mind liked being on the monthly roster for clinics. The patients were understandably grouchy from the waiting and they were only allocated like five minutes tops per consultation, including the one full minute some of them required to hobble or be wheeled into the doctor's office on the wheelchair by the nurse or an accompanying family member.
And to make things worse than they already were, the attending senior doctor who was supposed to supervise them today was just called to attend to an emergency in the operating theatre which left essentially three residents to run the entire morning clinic session on their own. Picking up the next file from the pile that the nurse had arranged as neatly as she could on the side table, Boaz allowed himself a brief moment to go through the records of the next patient he was supposed to see.
19 year old female. Admitted five months back for a broken foot after a fall. Only required a cast and bed rest. No surgery. Hmm... a routine follow up visit huh? Seemed simple enough for him to handle. Getting up from his seat, he crossed the room to pull open the door, a kindly smile on his face as he peeked out at the expectant faces of those in the waiting room who were waiting for their turn. "Miss Melinda Reese..?"

Melinda glance up when she heard her name called, her eyes turning towards the male nurse only to stop dead in her tracks. Her jaw drops a little as she looks him over before she felt the color rise to her cheeks. Grabbing her purse, she moves over to him before she gives him a smile "Hi, I'm Melinda. Is my doctor not here today?" not that she didn't mind, as he was pretty easy on the eyes.
Pushing her curls from her face, she was suddenly very glad she didn't decide to just up and leave.
She could miss one class...
No harm...right?

Boaz held the door open for Melinda, the smile on his face not once faltering as he patiently waited for her to enter the consultation room before letting the door shut behind her. "He's actually somewhere upstairs at the moment. Got called for an emergency at the operating theatre, which makes your guess as good as mine as to when he'll get back." He explained in the same way he did for the many others before her whenever they asked about the absent senior doctor in question.
Some of them were upset understandably. It was one of those really bad mornings when tempers would flare over the slightest aggravating factor if given a chance. Something that they still had to deal with nonetheless as unsavoury as the situation could potentially evolve into as he spelled out the options for the benefit of the young lady in front of him. "I'm one of the residents with the department. A specialist in training but a fully qualified doctor. This is just a one-time off arrangement in view of the exceptional circumstances that has occurred today. However, if you'll prefer to see him, I guess you could choose to either continue waiting till he gets back, or have your appointment rescheduled at the counter."

Mel thought it over as she smiles to him, as it made sense. She didn't mind really, she was just merely curious "No, its alright, I don't mind." stepping into the room, she slips onto the little exam table. Pushing her brown curls from her face, she smiles to him as she waits.
"So has it been crazy since he not here? I mean, I've been here a few times, and I don't think I have ever seen you before." she would remember him if she had, and probably come here more often. Crossing her legs, she relax as she sat her purse down on the chair next to the table.
"So by resident, does that mean once yours done with your training, this is the hospital you'll be working at for good?" she knew she was probably asking to many question, when it was he that should be. Though at the moment, it didn't really matter to her.
She was curious.

There were all sorts of patients who came from various walks of life as Boaz had found during the course of his training, ranging from those that just wanted to get right down to business to some that would tell him all kinds of stories about their lives and then an occasional few like Mel who were curious about him and his job. "Kind of. The residents are only allowed to see relatively straightforward cases on their own whereas the complicated ones all have to be cleared with a senior doctor, so we've been picking the cases and doing a lot of explaining to some very astute and unhappy patients who thought that these patients were jumping the queue."
He didn't mind the questions or the conversations he had with his patients really. In fact, he always made it a point to carry the conversation as best as he could while tactfully leading it on to the issues that needed to be addressed with the consultation. That in itself was an art that he needed to perfect without coming across as uncaring or brash. "It could be that your doctor decided to handle your case in person rather than leave things to chances in the hands of a relatively inexperienced resident, seeing as you are young and therefore have no reason to not make a full recovery from your sustained injury."
Crossing over to sit himself back on his chair, he picked up his pen from the table, his eyes skimming over the written notes from her previous appointment. Didn't seem like she was having any problems though her recovery rate seemed a little quick. Probably a case of the X-rays looking worse than the injury actually was? "Maybe. Or at least I hope to if the hospital has a position for me by the time I'm done with my training."
Looking up from her file, he smiled at her as he politely directed the conversation back to the consultation itself, nodding appreciatively at the clinic assistant who had just shown up from the side door that connected this room to the adjacent one. "Just a few questions if you will indulge me, Miss Reese. Could you tell me how you got your injury to begin with and if it has been giving you any problems so far?"

Mel nods a little as he explains everything to her, actually feeling bad for him when it came to dealing with unhappy patients. She didn't really understand that part, as to why someone would be unhappy. The way she saw it, as long as she was able to get in and be checked out, she was happy. It didn't matter which doctor or resident she saw.
Crossing her ankles, she chews on her lip for a moment before she chuckles "Gymnastic, I use to be a gymnast when I was younger. Well I just recently tried to get back into it, and I guess my body wasn't quite as limber as I was when I was a child." she gives him a sheepish smile as she push a few curls away from her face.
"I attempted to do a dismount off the beam, and landed wrong. Then I was foolish enough to think I could walk it off." she looks down at her ankle, hoping that was right from what she told the doctor a few months ago. It sounded logical if one were to look at her medical records.
She only hope he didn't see anything wrong with what she just explained to him.

Whatever Mel recounted seemed to coincide pretty much with what was documented in her records. Not that Boaz had any reason to suspect otherwise compared to the malingerers that came through the clinic every now and then, so he decided to let it go as that. "Looks like you got lucky despite all the walking you did back then with your injury. Some of our patients need surgery on top of a cast, otherwise the fracture will not heal properly." Was she due for an X-ray today? Probably not unless there was a persistent spot that was troubling her, of which none was reported during her previous visit a month or so ago so that was a good sign as any that didn't warrant any further investigation on his part as of this point.
"I'm just going to do a routine check here if you don't mind." Jotting down the date, he set the pen down and grabbed a pair of gloves from the box that was next to the computer, pulling them over his hands as he slid his chair over to the exam table where she was seated. "So how long have you been off the cast now and any problems so far?" He asked, his eyes making contact with hers as he waited patiently for her to remove her shoe so that he could check on her foot.

Carefully removing her heels, she set them both next to her as she shakes her head a little "I've been off the cast for about a month now..." she pauses as she just watch him for a brief moment, his eyes made her forget what she was going to say as she quickly looks back down. Trying to compose herself, she bites her lip as she coughs for a second "The only time my leg starts to hurt is if I extend it to much really. Other then that, walking and just doing daily routine seem to be fine." she push a couple of curls from her face as she lifts her leg up so he could take a look at it.
Get ahold of yourself Mel.....he is just a guy.....
A really handsome guy....

The moment Mel had her heels removed, Boaz slid his chair closer, grasping her foot gently with his gloved hands and guiding it to rest on his thigh before turning to smile at her. "There we go. Just let me know if any specific part hurts and I'll stop, alright?" Recalling from his own memory as to which particular bone was affected by the injury, he made sure to check on that last, his gaze alternating between looking down at her foot and up at her face to ensure that she wasn't grimacing from any pain or discomfort he might be causing as a result of the examination itself, all the while oblivious to the fact that she was checking him out.
A little pain whenever she overexerted herself didn't quite seem like due cause for concern since that happened to just about most people without foot injuries so unless his examination of her foot turned up with something grossly abnormal, it seemed that she was well on the road to full recovery at the rate she was going. "What about physiotherapy? Have you been compliant with your scheduled sessions with them?"

Mel gave him a small nod as he examines her leg, finding herself all but giggling as she watch him. He really was a handsome doctor, and normally she could ignore this, but she couldn't with him. Leaning back just a little, she couldn't help but smile as he look up at her to make sure she wasn't in pain.
Oh right...she was suppose to be here for her ankle.
Shaking her head, she looks away as a blush forms across her cheeks "I'm going to them all, and they seem to be doing me some good. I've only had to reschedule once due to class that I really couldn't miss." pushing her curls from her face, she leans forward as she "So, is it alright if I ask what your name is? Seeing as you know mine?"

Boaz's actions were gentle yet purposeful at the same instant as he examined Mel's ankle, pleased to see that she was able to tolerate the entire process without wincing or flinching. Not that he expected to find anything out of the ordinary given her documented recovery progress thus far, but it was always better to be careful and thorough just in case.
"I see. That's an excellent track record I must say. Most of our young patients don't quite see the importance of physiotherapy in aiding their recovery I'm afraid." Smiling wide at her, he lifted her foot off his own thigh the moment he was done with his physical examination, tugging the gloves off to toss them into the bin before he shook his head in response to her next question.
"I don't mind. It's Boaz, Boaz Crawford." Crossing briefly over to the basin to wash his hands, he returned to his seat, his eyes making contact with hers as he informed her of his intended management plan next. "Everything seems good so far Miss Reese. Now if you have no further questions or anything that you think I should know, I'll like to see you again in 3 months if that's fine with you?"

Mel couldn't help but smile at Boaz as he said everything seem to be okay. Yea everything was okay, but with him as her doctor at the moment, why wouldn't everything be fine? Shaking her head, she tries to clear her thoughts as she found herself blush "Um, yea with gymnastic I should know better, but I often push myself to much." she gives a weak chuckle before pulling her heel back on.
Quick say something Mel....
"Uh yea, I guess that is fine. I mean I can come in sooner if need be." real smooth. Chewing on her bottom lip, she wiggles her ankle just a little "I'm curious, what would happen if it starts to act up again? Would you be the one treating me Boaz?" please say yes...
please say yes..

"That's fine really - pushing yourself constantly and discovering your own limits. Just be careful when you go about it, alright?" Boaz tried to keep his tone light, encouraging with a touch of concern since he didn't want to come off as being too naggy and risk turning Mel off with his words. She was old enough to decide what she should attempt or avoid completely plus he recognized that it wasn't his place to start lecturing her on something like that.
"Hmm... I don't expect that to happen unless you twisted or landed on it wrong but if it troubles you bad enough, you can come directly to this clinic during office hours or the Emergency department when it's closed. As for your other question..." He looked a little thoughtful, mainly from her latter question though the answer to the former was already rolling cooly off his lips.
It wasn't the first time that he had a patient ask him that so he took it in his stride as a positive sign that he was doing things right with the building rapport thing he was supposed to do during the course of the consult with his patients, a kindly smile on his face as he gave her his answer. "If I'm still rostered to the clinic then, I'm sure that the reception staff will try their best to accommodate your request though I can't make any promises on that..."

Grinning, she nods to Boaz as she carefully slips off the exam table. After all, she had to be just a little careful. Never know, she could hurt herself "Alright, well hopefully when my next appointment comes up, you will still be here." pushing her curls from her face, she holds her hand out towards him.
"Thank you, I mean, you did just a great job. Better then the doctor that was taking care of me. And here I was just about to skip out on this appointment. I'm glad I didn't." looking down, she gives a small chuckle before she looks back up at him "I guess I should let you get back to work, while I head back to my classes." she paused, really trying to force herself to actually leave.
