The pink mare walked very slowly around the tree. The single tree filled with those little red fruit she had come to love so much in her time spent here. They smiled down at her from their perches just out of reach, all the ones nearer the ground already eaten. Reaching up and knocking one down with her large antlers was a possibility to get one down, but not one she wished to take. From that height, it would bruise upon impact with the ground. She didn't want a bruised fruit. She wanted a nice juicy one, free from blemishes. There were no other trees nearby for her to get this snack from, so for the moment it would seem she would have to go without.

Pouting slightly, she blew out of her nostrils in a most unladylike manner, not caring in her solitude about keeping her manners. Who was to see? No one. It had been a long time since Ami had stopped her wandering and it would appear like this single cherry tree stood off the main road for usual Star activity. She had yet to meet a single one. Almost like they avoided this place. Which was crazy. It was beautiful here or else she wouldn't have picked this spot to settle down for a time. Berry bushes grew around her, surrounded in turn by flowers of pretty pastels. The rest of the trees were of the simple leafing kind, a short distance away from her tree. Like the pretty pink tree was something special to whoever had put it here.

Well, seeing no one was a lie, now that her mind went back over it. The mare stopped her circling to lower her head, green eyes scanning the area before she realized what it was she was doing. It was something she could not deny any longer. Though she enjoyed her time in solitude, it was time to face the music.

Ami Ayako was finally lonely.

Vartan walked through the field, flicking his tail, tossing his head a little. The delicate lavender roses he'd been bestowed by his mother gave off a fragrance that reminded him of the home he'd finally left. After years of being alone. He'd woken up one day, and the herd and his family were gone, leaving him all alone. The love that had been his, and the beauty and happiness symbolized by his mother's roses. All gone. Except for the roses.

He'd felt empty and bitter, surrounding himself with the roses that began to grow wild. The leader, Poison Ivy, would've loved to see the land growing and thriving, in their absence. That had been the way of the Earth Song Herd, and its inhabitants. His mother, Atalanta, also would've loved the life in the land, especially the roses. But the roses could not heal a broken and abandoned heart, no matter how much effort and enjoyment went into a life surrounded by flowers and dreams. No one was there to enjoy it with him.

And with a heart fracturing in the loneliness and feelings that he'd been abandoned, Vartan had finally left. The only roses he brought with were those tangled in his mane and tail. He could plant the seedlings of the roses if and when he settled down with others. His best friends, and his only ones, in this wide world.

As he moved across the field, he glimpsed an elegant Arcturus cross mare...crowned with the branches of a cherry tree in bloom. Something in his heart moved, reminded of those who were gone. Those who he wasn't sure he'd ever see again. She was draped in unfamiliar cloth, but still the height of grace and beauty. And she was trying to reach down some cherries for herself.

Bunching himself to jump and run, he called out, "Heads up!" Vartan charged and leaped, using his short white horns to knock some bunches of the tiny red fruit down, catching some of the looser twigs in his strong young teeth. Coming to ground, he smiled and set them down at his feet in front of him. "Sorry about that. I take it you were interested in these, fair lady?" he asked apologetically.

The sudden appearance of another voice made Ami jump back in surprise and whirl her head around before she realized what was going on. Nearly stumbling over her own heels in her haste to get away, the pink tinted mare scurried away like a deer who had not noticed the wolf watching it until the wolf was running towards it. Only, of course, she didn't keep running. She went as far as the closest set of bushes and turned around, only to miss the spectacle. Jumping had occurred to her before, but jumping was not easy in these silks. And no way was she going to just leave them on the ground. Without them she felt, well, as naked as an animal in the forest could feel. She had always worn silks.

For a moment, the mare just stood there gaping at the purple stallion who seemed to have come out of nowhere. Or at least from the opposite side of her vision. It was so sudden, seeing another living Star after so long being by herself she had forgotten for a spell what one was supposed to do or say when meeting a stranger. 'Specially one who had just helped her. It was a shame the tree had to loose branches, but it lost branches before, so it would be fine, of course. She had come to love that tree like something sacred.

Stepping closer, Ami raised her head and embraced the pleasure of both his company and the beautiful aroma coming off him.

"Oh...Yes. I was." Stopping a good distance away, Ami shyly lowered her eyelashes. Strange. To feel shy. It really had been too long. "Thank you. I am afraid I have been a bit of a pig with this tree."

Vartan could smell the delicate cherry scent coming from her, or thought he could. He was so used to being around roses that his nose was both more sensitive, and more prone to failing him due to overload. And the scent of cherry was strong in this place. He didn't much notice the smell of roses that pretty solidly permeated his being these days, but it occurred in the back of his mind that other Stars would still be aware of how rosy he smelled, having spent so much time among roses all his life.

He coughed awkwardly. "You're welcome." He didn't know much what to say anymore, and his own voice sounded odd, almost rusty, even though he'd gotten used to talking to plants in his solitude. But he could say she didn't seem to have been too piggish with the cherries, confusing him. "I dunno. You seem very pretty and healthy, and wonderfully at home with this tree. Not all Stars can claim such bonds with plant life, or even much care or respect for an individual plant."

From what he'd heard from the rest of the herd as a foal, most Stars weren't that close to the plants, and their herd had deeply loved plants. Poison Ivy's vines, her son Nightshade's deadly seeds, his mother and siblings and his roses...plants had always been part of the soul of the herd. His father hadn't had any close relationship with plants, but he'd been a best friend of Nightshade and almost like a son to Poison Ivy. And, despite the stories, Vartan was standing in front of a Star from whose antlers flowers grew and bloomed, and she seemed to care for the great cherry above them. Rather heartwarming, and Vartan vaguely wondered if more Stars were like this, and he just hadn't known.

Ami smiled and shook her head, loose petals falling around her head as she giggled softly at his reaction. Not what she was expecting, of course. But instead of being annoyed at having to explain the phrase and perhaps more to come, she found it endearing. Like talking to the innocence of a child. She was glad he was the first to speak to her since she had left the peace of her own herd. He reminded her of that tranquility, it was almost as if she were back. Like she could just turn the corner and there would be her family, welcoming her back after her journey.

But it was still better this way. In the freedom to do as she pleased and go where she wanted. For all the peace of the place, it was very restricting. No wonder it wasn't uncommon for young Stars to never return after leaving on their journey.

"No. I meant I have been greedy." Though she did still remember to plant a few cherries around the place. The product of some of that was scattered about the place if one knew where to look. It wasn't the only tree in the area and some of the saplings could be mistaken for other trees. Not that she cared if someone else thought she was stripping the one cherry tree bare. She knew she wasn't neglecting giving the tree back what it gave her. That's what mattered.

"It matches my own flowers and is by itself. Hard for me not to. Does your own rose grow as my flowers do?"

Greedy? Perhaps. But the gardeners he remembered from his foal-hood had been selfless where the well-being of their symbiotic plants had been concerned. And the love of the plants had been shared with the foals of the herd. He couldn't speak for the lovely lady before him, but they weren't close by any herd that he knew of. So, maybe she just hadn't had anyone to share this love with.

Looking around, he noticed other saplings with similar foliage. Cherry saplings?

Vartan shook his head. "Pardon my impertinence, milady, but I do not believe you are greedy, not if you live so close with the trees that match you. Are these cherry saplings? If they're your saplings, I don't think you're so selfish as the word 'greedy' implies."

He tossed his head slightly, carefully, to keep the rose from going flying. "I'm afraid my rose does not grow precisely as your antlers do, in that my rose is not a physical part of my body. But it is a rose I keep and care for to the best of my abilities, and it was a gift from my mother, who loved her roses. If I could care for as many roses as some of the others of my old herd could care for so many seeds or vines or blossoms, it would be quite a gift," he added wistfully.

He wouldn't mind more roses making their home on him, as they had for his mother, his brothers, Poison Ivy, and Nightshade. But, alas, that had not yet happened. And he wasn't sure how to make it happen. This mare clearly succeeded, but probably as a result of some sort of trait gifted to her by one of her parents. Vartan was ready for a new chapter in his life, but he realized that he wanted plant life to continue to be a part of it.

The pink mare watched him look around, wondering what he would say of the little home she had made herself. The trees were widely spaced in this area and she had tried to keep the saplings organized. Even digging up and replanting some. If anyone had passed by, she would have asked them if they wanted one to take back to their own home and spread the beauty around, but she hadn't seen another Star in a long time. It would be an interesting task to do herself one day. Gather as many seeds as she could carry and travel around, planting them in different locations. She was afraid if she left this tree she either wouldn't remember the way back or find that someone had destroyed her little paradise while she was away. That would be worse than no one having a cherry tree to enjoy.

The smile on Ami's face widened uncontrollably at the compliment and she gave a little closed-mouth giggle. It was difficult not to let herself get carried away by this stranger. She hadn't realized how starved for attention she had been until she finally got it.

"Some of them. The other trees have claimed some space for their own offpsring." His next words brought a shift of sadness at the fact the rose didn't grow with him, than her green eyes alighted that he took care of it. Her gardening skills were basic. She knew plants went into the soil, to water them often, give them sunlight, and how to replant them if they needed more room. But if he kept a single rose alive for a long time without its roots, he must be a very skilled gardener. She wanted to know his secret.

"I think it is quite a gift to keep a single rose like that without it wilting. How old is it? My flowers grow and wilt much the same as all flowers." In other words, they were nothing special to her. Even though she knew how rare it was to find plant life living off another animal, no matter how small the plants were.

Vartan smiled. As he'd thought. And so lucky! It was the first time he'd seen another Star in YEARS, and it was one like his herd. Sort of. Only, in a sense, more magical than anybody in Earth Song. Actually, it made him feel a touch homesick. What had happened to the territories? Were the ivy and rose bushes still flourishing? Knowing Nightshade's seeds, they were probably cheerfully poisoning anything that invaded the old territory. But Vartan wasn't sure of the roses, or the ivy.

He blinked at her admiring of his rose. "How long have I had it? Ummm...I've sort of lost track. Since I was quite young, I think? But that would have been four or five winters past...." Vartan shrugged awkwardly. "My mother was always far more adept, and kept a small bouquet over her tail at all times; my sister, brother, and I could only keep one rose apiece with much success, and our father didn't have any plants to call his own. The only one like that, really, in our whole herd."

He paused, realizing he was rambling, and ducked his head, flushing. "I'm sorry, milady, for speaking so, but I'm afraid it has been quite a long time since I last saw another Star, not since I was an adolescent, when my herd, the Earth Song, disappeared. I fear I'm a terrible conversationalist," he explained shyly.

Hoshi Lockhart
No, I'm not sure what's involved there. But most of the Earth Song had plant edits. It might be interesting to skin the Stars who are bedecked in living plants as the VERY distant descendants of some of the Earth Signs, but IDK. oO

Oh, how lovely! She would so dearly have seen his family for herself. She couldn't even begin to imagine the kind of care they must have had for the nature around them. Her family wasn't as attentive with what was around them. Oh, they cultivated what they needed for food and made sure they didn't take too much of it at once, but that was just to sustain themselves. Ami tried her best to take care of what was around her out of the pure joy of it. To see flowers bloom that she had planted and cared for so carefully was the most satisfying thing she had ever done with her life. Well, maybe second under leaving the herd she'd been so unhappy with.

"Yet it looks as if you have just picked it," Ami answered in obvious wonder, stepping a little closer to admire it more. She made sure to keep a respectful distance from him, however. It would certainly not do to just walk right up to someone you didn't know. She would not be rude, could not if she even wanted to.

At his flush, she shook her head once more, causing another shower of petals to fall gracefully around her. They mingled well with the petals already on the ground from the tree. "I am enjoying the conversation. It has been a while since I have seen another Star, myself. I dare to admit to myself I have become a little lonely. What brings you out this way?"

elfstar89
That'd be neat! We know Virgo's body can grow plants.
