It was a warm morning, A large male was at the edge of a cave, the entrance of the harem he was born into. The sun was filtering through the trees onto his camouflaged fur warming him up and preparing himself for a momentous start. He hadn't informed his parents yet because he feared they would worry for him and want him to stay with the harem longer. He had a good place in his parents harem, his father being the harem leaders best friend placed him high on the hierarchy of the harem. Despite the conditions of the past.
Slowly rising from his resting spot he felt around groggily for his gas mask taking a few minutes to get it on. It had become a routine for him, he would sleep outside the cave so he wouldn't have to wear his mask and it would act as a deterrent to other predators and dragons. The mask was silver and black and very sleek, it had taken him a good number of years to perfect it so it was comfortable and effective at containing the deadly toxins he breathed almost constantly. Although not deadly in the short term if he was breathing normally there were still quite a few temporary side effects, if breathed out heavily and on purpose however it was deadly and if by some miracle you lived through it expect brain and nerve damage.
With his mask now secured he breathed in deeply preparing to enter the cave.

Walking in he observes many of the dragons watching him. It was always the same, they know what he could do to them on accident and avoided him at most costs. The were never mean after he had proved himself intelligent enough to generally protect them from his poisons, never mean intentionally, anyways, but always distant. With each growing year he began to feel more and more invisible to those not his family and he was rarely acknowledged. His parents always supportive managed to still get him work among the group that he could do efficiently provided he was by himself. This didn't really make him sad either though he understood their fear. As a Wurm his poisons had killed 2 of the newest hatch-lings and many became sick. When they realized it was him they wished him removed from the harem all together. He thought if he were ever to bear children their health and safety would also come first.
He also had come to enjoy his solitude and the peaceful quiet of the surrounding area, however with time it had become commonplace and the feelings of mystique was simply not there anymore. Finally finding his parents he approaches and even though they could not see his face they know that he was serious. They knew their sons intent before he had even managed to give it a voice. Nodding respectfully to his parents he begins the conversation. "Father and mother I have something important to talk to you about this morning. I know you might have suspected, I am, after all coming into the age where I may choose to leave the harem."
His mother quickly interjects before he continues with tears in her eyes "You cannot leave yet son! You are not ready for the real world! You may be feel ready but there is still so much more for us to teach you!" Placing his hand on hers, his father speaks "She is right there is still more for us to give to you." with a stern look on his face. He was never one to show emotions physically it was something you just had to learn to pick up.

He grimaced at his parent, they had protected him for so long he had expected this reaction. He knew it would be hard for them but he needed to go out and learn more and meet more dragons! Would they all simply tolerate him as his harem did? What kind of new medicines would he find, oh the advances he thought he might achieve. His biggest hope of all was to figure a more immediate cure for his poison. He knew he could not change who he was but he was interested in what his poisons might do for others rather than just harm. The latter he figured might never be a plausible thing to occur, poison was poison but he could still hope.
"I'm sorry I know you have feared for this day lately, I could tell by the odd silences around us. I must go there is so much I aspire to do with my life and so many things I would wish to see. I want to travel and learn more! I promise I will visit. Who knows maybe in the far future you will have grandchildren!" He knew that pitch for them was the best! He saw how his mother looked at the new hatchlings, she wanted her own grandchildren to play with. Looking at his father he adds "And yes I may have to fight other dragons whether by choice or not, Do not forget however in all reality if it comes down to it I will just remove my mask." Unspoken to his father he thinks about how he will try not to rely on his poisons unless he had to. He wanted to learn how to fight properly.

He waited patiently for the next few days for a response. He wanted them to have time to come to terms with the fact that his leaving now was inevitable and was no longer a question but a simple fact.
On the third night the harem leader called Adrosa approached him. He was a huge dragon. Undoubtedly fit for the position of harem leader, not only was he huge but he knew how to use it to his advantage. Oddly enough for a creature with so much power he could not speak. This was not important however as he was able to easily convey his feelings. Piss him off and chances of your head being smashed into something like a boulder or the wall of the cave were likely, if he liked you he would playfully shove. They both knew why he was here. Bowing his head to Sarin he pushed a bag toward him and simply left. Although it hadn't seemed it but it was quite the honor the way he had done that. Many dragons have left the harem without even a glance from the leader and he had even received a farewell gift. Huffing excitedly to himself (after the leader had fully left of coarse he did have some pride) picking up the bag he heads to where his parents reside again.
Clearly expecting him they to appear to be ready for him to leave the two have prepared a bag for him and his travels! After some tears from his mother and some reluctant grunts from his father. He sets off in the middle of the night to excited to wait for the daylight.
Stalking through the forest he can feel his heart beat it had only been 2 hour but he had been moving at full speed. He had chosen specifically not to fly because he wanted to watch for any plant he might want to keep. In a few more hours he would be out of the territory and treading new ground that he had never touched before. He looks up at the stars grinning like a b*****d gone crazy. He was so high on adrenaline he entertained the idea that at this very moment the possibility of temporary insanity was not out of the realm of possibility.

1 month later I should have made my cave on the other side....." Grunting in dismay Sarin gets up reluctantly. He had found a good place to call home on devil peak mountain. It was perfect for him! He was close enough to the top of the volcano that not a lot of animals lived there and he could wander around without his mask on. This was to tempting for him to pass up and he began digging right away. it was small. Only big enough to fit him with a little wiggle room, he would work on it more as time went by and make sure to dig a little to the left to avoid the sun better.
He hadn't seen many dragons and the ones he had he just snuck around like a weirdo observing them. He quickly realized he had no idea how to approach them! Such a glaring flaw in the plan...how could he not have realized this! He felt so lame with how reluctant he was to approach them. He really didn't socialize among the children he grew up with and wasn't sure how to start. He couldn't learn anything this way.
Only a few weeks later he made his first contact. Not exactly by choice.
"HI MISS" Yelled Xing. A small wurm barely out of his shell a few months. He had excelled at speech and learned it quick. He was also unfortunately curious sticking his little green nose into anything he was curious about. He had been in the bushed looking for worms when he heard rustling and a huge female dragon in the area, her build was very similar to aunt Jacq's.
Surprised Sarin jumps back and covers his mouth. He wasn't wearing his mask. Looking around he tries to locate the sound. It was small and squeaky. Looking down he finally noticing the wurm in the bushes he backs up a little farther to ensure he doesn't make him sick. Reaching back to his shoulder blade he grasps the mask while still holding his breath. The wurm curiously watching him the whole time. and thankfully not coming any closer.
With the mask now secured he just stares at the child. He said miss. Was he so un-masculine that he appeared to be a female! A bit offended at the apparent jab at his masculinity he retorts "what do you want wurm thing?" and immediately realizes how childish that made him sound. Truly when it came to dealing with dragons he was just plain off the mark.
Rolling around giggling Xing giggles "I'm not a wurm thing in a XING THING!" Turning his green eyes to sarin he says "Your funny miss!" rolling into a more proper position he says "Though mommy's says its impolite to give my nickname to strangers. My name is Xingyun ri"
Realizing how young the child is he calms down. Clearly the child just had not grasped the concept of properly identifying gender. "Hello Xingyun ri, My name is Sarin"

"That's a nice name miss, I think it sounds super cool!!!" he says once again rolling around. "Are you knew here? I've never seen you before? Did you know you're very close to trespassing on mother's territory? She doesn't like that! She could totally beat you up!!!"
The little bugger was actually kind of cute, despite all of his hyper-ness he had a healthy sense of curiosity. Laying down he decides this kid would be good practice for his training! "First of all Xing I am a mister not a miss, misses are female dragons and I am a male. Yes I am new I've been here around 2 months? I think. I've been so busy it's becoming hard to tell." Stopping for a second he gives Xing a moment to see if he has any questions so far. With this new information he is silent, clearly having interest in this new info. A good sign for a fast learner so he continues "No I was not aware of that I was encroaching on new territory, thank you for telling me. I have not had time yet to investigate the surrounding area too much farther than my den." Laughing at the threat of getting beat up he continues "I have no doubt of that, I have absolutely no experience fighting other dragons."

Looking quite befuddled he tilts his head and closes his eyes. Moments later, he open's them appearing to have an understanding! Opening his mouth he says "I don't get it" staring solemnly at sarin "What do you mean your a mister? Aunt Jacq is a miss and she's just like you! What's the difference? " puffing his cheeks he thinks harder.
Wow he REALLY didn't have the concept of sexes down at all! raising an eyebrow at Xing he isn't sure how one could be so confused about the most basic of things. "I have male parts, just like you, that makes you a male. Your mommy has different parts. That's what makes the basic difference between miss and mister."
Apparently it was time to interrupt this meeting, Velvet had stayed back when she realized the male...Sarin, had not noticed her. When she realized he was not a threat she decided to observe, she had almost attacked as soon as her son made the mistake of pointing himself out to the other dragon! But he was startled and clearly not a fine tuned dragon in terms of paying attention to his surroundings. It was amusing watching them talk back and forth but now many questions were being raised, it in itself was fine but she wanted herself and Qing to tell their children about sexes and such to avoid confusion. "Xing" she says revealing her location and moved forward. Usually one would hesitate not knowing the opponent, but as he said, it was quite clear that he was a novice in fighting and his body said the same thing to her.

Glancing over sharply at the sound embarrassed Sarin moves back from the wurm. He didn't want distance to her young to be a reason for attack. He once again was unsure what to say, she was beautiful. Red fur covered her body and she wore fine jewelry and her horns curled in a way that reminded him of butterfly antenna. The wurm was easier to talk to because of his age, the restrictions of protocol to another dragon wasn't fully enforced yet and he didn't have to worry about accidentally offending. He observes, it wouldn't be mistook if he did that, she could initiate the conversation and it would start better that way.
"MOMMY!" Xing yelps excitedly and nervously at the same time, excited to see his mom, not excited he was caught talking to a stranger! It was on her list of no no things. Wiggling over to her from the bushes he slithers around her front legs.
"I'm glad you at least came beside me Xing, you know better though to speak with strangers without me." looking down at him with a hard glance. She didn't want to but had he been a more able predator he could have easily been killed upon revealing his spot. His natural color afforded him a camouflage that she never had as a child. The wurm flinched at her look, with that out of the way she gets a better look at the young male. she was at least 40 years his senior she could tell, he was very green. He had some intellect however, he chose to back up and shut up as she approached which was a sign that he had a fair amount of common sense.

"What business do you have talking to my Child without a parent present?" She asks now eyeing Sarin down sharply. She had to remain dominant of the situation by habit and necessity.
Careful not to flinch Sarin considers his answer. Even if he wasn't that keen on fighting, instinctively, he found it hard to deal with the thought of being pushed around. It appeared he was a little more dominant that he had imagined himself. Still, he knew he couldn't win and he really didn't want to. This was the first contact he had since leaving his harem and the kid was alright. "I was simply learning the area around my den when I happened upon you wurm." He offered no more explanation than that, he was not on her territory yet and didn't really owe her more than that. He chuckled internally though at the thought of how stubborn he was being, he was apparently discovering things about himself also.
Was he trying to be an a**? A moment ago he was calm, polite and a little childish in nature, Apparently he must get along better with children..... "You are a strange dragon you know that" after stating it so she turns around and begins to head back. "Little Xing come" it was not so much a command but a mothers beckoning to her child.
"By miss!!! I hope to see you again" He says squiggling quickly behind his mother.
Smiling Sarin puts his hand on his cheek "He got it wrong again"

2 months later
Sniffing the ground slowly and thoroughly He picks up the sent. Mushrooms! He had noticed a few weird species not listed in his books! Now he was on the look out to document more. It was quite exciting for him as three of them were even poisonous! It was going well for his research too! Although he honestly hadn't found a way to make it safe for people or a positive use he had found ways to store it and make a portable never gas pack out of it, it only contained a extremely small portion of his poison and some spore from a mushroom he had. It was only a temporary suppressor of the nerves as he didn't want to kill anyone. He was right to move out here, progress was good even if small. Plus he had gotten quite good at hunting! And even found himself to be immune to other poisons! He was hunting a diamond back terre snake, truthfully at the time it wasn't even for food. He wanted the poison since he was working on anti-venom, but he ended up getting bit. Shocked he wasn't sure what to do, he'd never been bit before. He'd had a crude version of anti-venom but would it be effective enough? More important yet would be make it back to the cave first? He didn't think he would, but headed back anyways. Upon arriving at his cave he realizes that he was feeling no effects from the snakes venom. He knew the effects, he had read about them, he should be feeling them now. Allowing his curiosity to get the best of him he decides to hold off on the anti-venom to see just how long it will take before the effects hit him, stupid, he knew. But it was his field of study. Nothing happened, the next day he begins using his own anti-bodies in his anti-venom and the outcome is potentially far more efficient than the original.
5 Months later
Hearing a noise outside his den he tightens. It is near midnight and almost nothing good would be near his cave at this time. He places his mask over his mouth but does not secure it. Exiting he observes but sees nothing, weary still he sniffs the air. He smells something somewhat familiar to him, growling he calls out "Miss velvet I have respected your territory, to what pleasure to I owe this visit"

from the darkness she calls "I do not recall giving my name to you" he was getting better at picking up the presence of others.
Sighing at her response he say"I observed other dragons warning of a red dragon with a fiery temper called velvet" he hadn't really been sure if he was correct, securing his mask he calls out to the darkness "You did not answer my question."
Sitting in her cover she tries to figure out how to word what she needs to say, she hadn't wanted to come here. But he was not from her area originally so she might have the info she needed. "You come from areas not here......Do you know of any doctors within a reliable range from my terratory. I know of none."
"...." That was a weird question, she didn't even know of how far he came from, she must be really desperate. "No. There were no doctors in my harems territory" he says regrettably while thinking of the destruction he caused. If there had been would one have been able to save the wurms he had killed? "Why?"
Hearing the sadness in his voice she decides she could confide a little more, maybe it would help him remember one, even if it was only a rumor he had heard. "My son has been bitten, he was out playing and a poisonous snake bit him" She hated going to another for help but she hadn't any choice she knew she had to act fast.
Shocked he asks quickly "How long ago was he bitten!" practically yelling at the end of it.
Shocked she replies "Slightly less than an hour ago" Upon her response she sees him rush into his den. "Sarin?"
rushing out of his cave he takes to the air screaming back at her "SHOW ME WHERE YOUR CAVE IS!" Minutes later they arrive at the cave and velvet directs him to her son. He was vomiting when Sarin arrived. Not giving anyone the chance to stop him he feed the medicine to Xing and holds his jaws shut, stopping him from vomiting it up.
Growling with confusion she yells "Unhand my son!" heading toward them intent to remove him from her son. In her confusion and desperation had she made the wrong choice!

He had expected this, he knew it would be viewed as aggression and there was just no time to explain to her what he was going to do. It was a miracle the child had even lived as long as he had. Placing a arm in her way he bars her from her child, clamping her teeth into his arm. He clamps his teeth hard, he had never been bitten before, but he would not release his grip from Xings mouth with his other hand. Another dragon that was green and white that he had not noticed attacked his back aiming her jaws for his throat. Maneuvering his body she clamps onto his shoulder instead and this time he yelps in pain. Now that both of the adult were clamped down he uses this only opportunity to yell "He cannot throw up the medicine!!!" Panting they all stop moving. Both females begin to reclaim themselves from their instincts but haven't let go, they couldn't yet. The instinct to protect was still compelling them.
A half hour had passed, Xing was no longer throwing up and had passed out. He was breathing again though and his had begun to sound normal again. Sarin was outside addressing the wounds that Qing and herself had made. She was glad that Jaq was out looking for a doctor too, with her strength she would have for sure murdered him. She had felt ashamed, they tried to kill the dragon who had saved their son. Going outside now she talks to Sarin "You said you knew of no doctors" She says frustrated, if he had said he was a doctor maybe she wouldn't have attacked him.
Staring outward he answers "I don't because I'm not, you just got lucky is all. I study poisons and anti-venoms" staring at the blood soaking through his bandages he wonders if he should add another layer of gauze or if it will stop bleeding soon, his shoulder was probably doing the same thing. "I've never been bit before. It hurts more than I thought it would."
Laughting at Sarin she adds "Surly in mock battles with your siblings or other harems hatchlings your were hurt, you don't seem a very keen fighter."
Clenching his fists he is ashamed now of the way he was treated. "I was not allowed to, I wear this mask for a reason. I breath poisons involuntarily."

"I was wondering what that contraption was on your face. Sorry I didn't realize. What about your siblings though? They must breath poison also right?"
"I have no sibling, my parents have abstained from having children after me. My parents don't carry poisons, it's a gene we though was no longer in the family line. the last know relative with poisonous breath in out family was 6 generation's ago." getting up he bows to velvet. "I am heading home now, Xing will be fine." He did not want to discuss this topic anymore. It brought up to many bad feelings.
Realizing she had brought up something he clearly did not like to think about she mentally makes a note to herself not to bring it up. She could see how it would bother him though, from what he had revealed he had basically been alone in a den full of dragons. She had many sibling and harem siblings what would it have been like to be ignored by all of them... "Good night doctor and thank you" Bowing back she heads into the cave.
Laughing he heads home. Not knowing that from here on out dragons hearing of the rumor of him would look for him and request his help as a doctor
