Renatus Bar. Welcome to Renatus Bar! It was by luck that Valentine had found this place. The bar was one of his pride and joys in the beginning and was quite the success. However, when the Inucbus has become to busy with his mob life, the bar was forced to close, and will only reopen when the Incubus wishes to go back. Upon walking into the bar, it is decked out in the colors black and red. There are many places to sit if one does not wish to hand around the bar. If one is wanting to throw a party or wishes to celebrate with close friends, for a pretty penny, one can rent out the private room. While in the private room, one has their one small bar and dancers if they should request them. Walking into the back of the bar, there is a large stock room that is always full with a very large variety of alcoholic beverages. However, there is another door which leads upstairs to a very nice apartment. Walking inside, you are immediately in the kitchen/living room. There are two bedrooms, the master bedroom along with the master bath, and then the room which Seraph claims. There is an extra bathroom that belongs to Seraph but is also open to guests. Sadly, the apartment is rarely visited, and the only person who really goes there is Seraph. However, fate will come into play which will make the bar much more frequented and lived in.

X X X XXXXX X X X The Blood Incubus really didn't know what to think or say. Valentine was just so overwhelmed with so many emotions. For years, he had been telling himself that Ichirou was gone, never to be found, but now he was standing right in front of him. Removing his glasses and slipping them inside of his jacket, bright golden eyes looked over the crystal eyed tiger. He looked the same as he did so many years ago, but that was tied to their contract. For as long as Valentine live, Ichirou would live as well. Happy memories started to fill his thoughts, making his heat beat faster. He would be able to finally take him once, and then they could be a happy family again. Inhaling a deep breath, the Incubus tired to calm himself down. He would hate to get to excited and pounce the other man, and Valentine was sure that the Mistress wouldn't approve of it either. However, it didn't stop him from pulling Ichirou close to his body and kissing him. His body trembled from the sensation of being close to his tiger, but Valentine wondered why Ichirou was so stiff. Was he that upset with him or in shock of seeing him again? Frowning as he pulled away, the blonde couldn't help but notice the look in the slave's eyes as he touched his hair. The man looked as though he was about to maul him. Was was wrong with him? Feeling a sick, gut wrenching pain, the blonde grabbed his hand and asked him a simple question. Hopeful eyes searched Ichirou's but they soon grew hard and cold. A pained expression graced his features for only a second, and Valentine stepped away and put his glasses back on. Turning his back to him, Valentine inhaled a deep breath. "I see... I am sorry for my earlier behavior then. It was wrong of me to take such liberties."
Closing his eyes, he tired to let all of this sink in. This wasn't how it was supposed to happen, but now the mob boss knew what the ignorant Sohma head had meant when he said that Ichirou was gone forever. His body tensed at the past memory, and he had to hold back the growl. That ignorant and foolish man had only made thing difficult these past years, but at least he had found his precious tiger. Memories or no memories... at least Ichirou was still alive. Inhaling a deep breath, Valentine slowly exhaled and turned to face him, arms and hand clasped behind his back. "You look terribly confused right now, and that confusion is very understandable. However, I'll still be taking you back home. I've searched for far too many years to let you disappear again." Valentine would never let Ichirou go again. "I know you probably have questions that you want answered, but you will just have to wait. Now lets just get you out of her. I have things that I need to do." Knocking on the door, Valentine looked at him with a hidden desire. "Don't try to run. You are still under contract with me, so please don't make me invoke it. I don't want to hurt you." Once the door was opened, Valentine walked down the hall, stopping to speak with the Mistress. After a few moments, Valentine thanked her again and took Ichirou out to the waiting car. Climbing in behind the cursed tiger, Valentine watched the door close, and watched the driver climb back inside. Giving the order to go t the bar, the man raised an eyebrow and obeyed his employer's wishes. Leaning into his seat, the Incubus checked the time. "Have you heard anything from Seraph? I didn't see him with I left." The driver looked up and nodded his head. "Yes Sir. I dropped him off at the bar earlier this morning. I believe that it was around six this morning." Valentine smiled and nodded his head in understanding. Seraph would be happy to see Ichirou, even if he didn't recognize him. "Seraph is my son that you helped raise until your disappearance."
Looking over at him, Valentine knew this all had to be overwhelming, but it wasn't like he could ease the other into it. It just made Val wonder how he would do at the mansion. Should he tell him about his job now or later? If he told him now, there was a possibility that he'd try to avoid him. It wasn't like he could run away from him though. As soon as they entered the bar, the other man wouldn't be able to leave without his permission. Dismissing his thoughts as they pulled up to the bar, the Incubus felt this gut wrenching pain once more. They had shared so many happy memories here, but now Ichirou had no recollection of them. Valentine was the only one living in his memories. Blowing out a sigh, the blonde got out and waited for the quiet tiger. "We will be staying here for a few days. While we're here, I'd like for you to relax as much as possible. Just don't try to escape. The bar will prevent you from going out." Leading him inside, the mob boss looked around his bar with pride. He had been happy here, working with Ichirou, and it made him wonder if he'd ever be able to come back here. The chances of that was highly unlikely seeing as the syndicate kept him extremely busy. Jerking his head towards the back, the blonde led his beautiful tiger upstairs, and into the apartment. "Here we are. Look around if you want. I'm going to get a drink. You have some clothes in the closet of the master bedroom. Take a shower if you wish." Walking into the kitchen, Val found a bottle of whiskey and took a big drink. Today had been a little nerve wrecking and a few drinks would help him relax. All he had to do was remember to stop.
Walking over to the table, Valentine fell back into a chair and propped his feet up on the table. Loosening his tie, the Incubus took another drink and started to think. Just how many people had his tiger been with? Was he mistreated or abused? The thought of Ichirou being hurt made the mob boss prickle with anger. He would never ask Ichirou about his past without him. No need to being up probably more than unpleasant memories. Valentine wasn't sure who'd be more upset. Him or Ichirou? Letting out a sigh, the Incubus took another drink and started to doze. It would be okay to rest for a few moments. Setting the bottle in the floor, the man crossed his arms over his chest and fell into a light slumber.

♤ ♠ ♤ The close proximity between their bodies was shocking at first, but it seemed like he was meant to fit in the space this strange man provided. As he was pulled close, his chin fit in the spot between neck and shoulder, and the planes of his chest pressed against this blonde man’s without fighting for dominance and space. The arms around him were strong and comforting, as if he fell apart, there would be someone to hold him together. Yet, before it had even begun, it was all over. There was nothing left but the man, breathing his question, as if it were the last thing holding him in, before he would fade into nothingness. And Ro answered honestly. He did not know this stranger. He did not recognize this blonde hair, or the gold eyes staring back at him, intensely, as if he was searching for something. But he did notice when the man’s face seemed to fall. There was disappointment laced through his features, and inexplicably, Ro noticed the tiniest way the man’s mouth seemed to turn down at the corners of his mouth. Then he was moving away, and Ro had the man’s back. He saw the line of the blonde’s shoulders raise then fall. The tiger frowned deeply, moving back, starting to curl up. When he heard the blonde male speak, he cast his eyes down. Now, he felt guilty. He slumped, unable to look at the blonde man. It was like a weight in the room. This man had come looking for someone, and it couldn’t have been him. Yet, this man had thought, with something that might have been desperation, that Ro was the one he had been searching for, and now the tiger felt awful, that he had confused this man, and given him false hope. It was worse than being confused about himself and his memories. At least with himself, he had been the only one effected. Now, he had affected someone else.
♤ ♠ ♤ When the man turned around, Ro looked up at him, his eyes still dark, holding the sadness and confusion he felt. He watched as the man closed off his posture, standing stiff and tall, as if he were ready to leave, or lead an army. Ro’s eyes focused on the impeccable way he held himself, still confused and lost in this swirling world that presented these possibilities. When the blonde man spoke, Ro listened. He would be going home with this man? Who thought he knew him? The tiger bit his lip, uncertain if it would really be smart to go with this man. However, it didn’t seem as though he had a choice. This blonde male seemed like he wouldn’t accept no for an answer. He was already turning away, telling Ro not to ask any questions yet. And that he shouldn’t run, because he was under a contract with him. Ro snorted, looking at the man incredulously. He was under contract? And apparently, if this contract was invoked, Ro would get hurt? The tiger frowned deeper. If he wasn’t supposed to ask questions, how would he ever understand all this confusion and the intricacies that were supposedly his life. However, when the door opened, Ro stood, taking nothing from the room but the clothes on his back and followed without having to be told twice. He didn’t even need a guard’s handling as he moved after the blonde male. It was a short walk to the Mistress’s office, and Ro pulled back, letting the blonde male do all the talking. He didn’t want to bristle against the strange woman, but he wanted to be free of her reach, and out into the world once more.
♤ ♠ ♤ Once the blonde male finished the transaction. Ro slunk after him to his car, wondering just how far he would get if he did decide to run, and how much pain he would be in if this “contract” was evoked. Instead, Ro was ushered into the car first, and he went, bristling at the confine and his confusion about the scent within. Why it tickled in the back of his mind, as if it were familiar, but he knew he hadn’t experienced such a scent. Well, not this specific scent. He frowned, thinking about the scent, even as he heard the blonde male speaking in the background. There was mention of another name, and then the driver was confirming something the blonde male had asked. When Ro focused again, the blonde male was explaining that Seraph was his son, and supposedly Ro had helped raise him. Trying to stay calm and keep form asking questions, the tiger continued to slot his questions in order of importance he was trying to stay calm while they moved in the vehicle. Instead, blue eyes searched over the car, noting the fine seats and the clean interior. It must have been a sign of pride that this car was so well kept. It seemed to fit in with this man’s impeccable look. Everything about him was clean cut and expensive, following the power that he seemed to trail with him effortlessly. It frustrated the tiger, unsure why a man like him would have any need to lie, or any need for someone such as himself. Obviously, if this man wanted someone or something, he would have just taken it. It was striking to see him so atiently coaxing Ro himself around, as if the tiger were a child fumbling through the darkness. But really, that’s exactly what he was. Lost.
♤ ♠ ♤ When they stopped, Ro looked out of the window, taking in the sights of the city around him, before heading inside the building. It was strange, now that he was inside the building, it was as if he couldn’t’ leave. As if passing through those doors meant he wouldn’t be able to get back out himself. He was tempted to turn around and try, just to see if his sneaking assumption was true, but he didn’t need to. The blonde man was speaking, confirming his thoughts and worries. He didn’t want to be trapped in this space with this man, and whoever else was going to come and see him. He would just disappoint more people, and he wasn’t sure if he could take that. Especially not this son he was supposedly supposed to have raised alongside this blonde male. It would only mean more disappointment for the people that surrounded him, and it would only serve more purpose to hurt his heart. Ro cared about people. He cared about these people who seemed to be hurting because he didn’t remember them, or was not the person they were searching for. Yet, it seemed that the blonde male was done for now, dismissing Ro easily, letting him do as he pleased, noting that he wouldn’t be able to leave. Ro felt lost, as soon as the man stopped speaking. He wasn’t sure what he should do, or where he should go. He was confused, given the free reign of the house. The scent from the car was there, underlying everything and it made the tiger nervous. He twitched as he tried to focus himself on the task at hand. If the blonde male was going to leave him, than he would clean himself.
♤ ♠ ♤ Going to shower, Ro made quick work of it, not liking to be in small places for too long. He cleaned his body and scrubbed at his hair before coming out with the towel around his waist and looked in the closet where it was said there would be clothes for him. Funny enough, there were clothes there waiting for him, and they seemed to fit well enough, though they were loose, as if he had lost weight. They were impeccable and expensive, just as the other male’s had been, and it through him off. Ro didn’t have expensive tastes. He didn’t like luxury things. Hell, he couldn’t even remember liking men, but he put on the clothes easily and sat on the edge of the bed, looking around the room for anything that would give him a clue about these people. There didn’t seem to be any pictures out, so he couldn’t tell from that. And everything seemed so stoic, as if the place hadn’t been lived in for a while. It was clearly not a mina residence, but some sort of back up. Everything was stream-lined and far too clean for Ro’s tastes. It was almost the opposite of a home with the way it seemed to sparkle with cleanliness rather than invite guests. Making his way out of the master bedroom, there was another room that seemed to be more lived in. Ro spent time in here too, looking at objects, picking them up and turning them over, looking at letters and papers for any sort of indication of who lived there. Frustrated, Ro left the room and headed back downstairs to examine the bar.
♤ ♠ ♤ This room was well maintained, as if still in operation. No one was working it yet, but the stools and counters were clean. Curiously, Ro went to the wall by the exit of the bar, noting the licensing that was there. He read a name: Valentine Renatus. That must have been the blonde male that had brought him here. At least there was a name. Everything else was spick and span, clean and without blemish. Without any other indications, the tiger headed back up to the apartment, and took in the dozing form of the male at the counter. Maybe he was just as exhausted as Ro felt, but of course, there was no certainty in that either. The tiger sat down, looking at the man and studying him. The scent was all over this impeccable man too, and Ro thought deeper, trying to distinguish the familiar scent for what it was. He ground his teeth together and closed his eyes, trying to unearth the name of the scent dancing in his nostrils. Finally he opened his eyes and smacked the counter beneath him. ”Cigarettes! You smoke cigarettes! I can smell it… that’s what it is… it’s cigarettes….” The tiger was a bit enthused, glad he had figured out the scent he had been trailing, but he hadn’t given much though to the man who had been dozing, or what the sound of impact had done to the man who had been sleeping. He was just so proud of himself for figuring out that mysterious scent that hung in the air like a menace At least he knew he was making some sort of progress.
♤ ♠ ♤ OoC: I'm too lazy to make another layout. lol. So i hope this one is okay ;3

X X X XXXXX X X X Sitting at the kitchen table, the Incubus was trying to think of ways (if any) to return Ichirou's memories. Was it even possible to do so? The Sohma head had laughed at him so that meant it was going to be a near impossible thing to do, but nothing was impossible for Valentine Renatus!! He was as stubborn as a mule once he set his mind on something, and he always got what he wanted. He made sure that he did. So if he was wanting Ichirou to regain his memories, then by the gods, he was going to move the moon and stars to do so. Sitting the bottle down, the blonde closed his eyes and started to relax.
He could hear the shower running. Ah the shower... They had shared so much time together in there, and it made him want to go after him. However... That probably wasn't the best of ideas right now. Val had a feeling that he'd end up getting mauled by the tiger. He didn't want that so letting out a sigh, Val crossed his arms over his chest and got comfortable in his chair once more. If he wasn't able to go play with his tiger them he'd just catch up on his rest. He was safe here. No one would bother him here... Being completely exhausted and overworked, it didn't take long for the Incubus to fall asleep. It felt nice to be able to just rest like this. Being at the mansion, Val had a lot of work to do and he had his image and reputation to keep up. He wanted others to fear and respect him. Being awake and working constantly helped that image, and whenever he was threatened... well... It wasn't very pretty. When Val was finished with them, they made sure to never make the same mistake again.
As Ichirou started to move around the apartment, Val slowly started to wake up. He was sure that the tiger had questions, and if he was looking for answers in the apartment, then he was going to be sorely disappointed. After he recovered his strength, he tore down every picture and hid them away. By hiding them away, the mob boss just put them all in a box and in the closet on the top shelf. Val wanted to make sure that he had easy access to them. However... It had been years since he had last looked at them. When the other man had settled down, the blonde fell deeper asleep, not hearing him when he came into the kitchen. Hearing the smack on the table, Val quickly jerked away and grabbed the twin pistols out of his coat, looking around before realizing where he was at. Seeing Ichirou, he cleared his throat and put his weapons away before fixing his chair, and sitting back down. "Sorry about that. I'm not used to waking up like that... Much less sleep." Giving him a charming smile he smoothed out his coat and put his chin in his hand as he looked over his tiger.
God he was beautiful... He looked just like he did in the past, maybe a little thinner but he'd make sure he gained his weight again. He would make him healthy again. Inhaling a deep breath and pushing the past from his mind, he turned his attention to the present. He had to answer questions now. "I'm sure that you have questions so ask away tiger. I'll answer all that you wish to know." Giving him a smile and looking over him, he felt his body start to burn with hunger. God he wanted him... He wanted him bad but there was nothing he could about it... Right now. However, he did need to feed later tonight and the man knew where that he'd find some willing people tonight at the bar. He just had to make sure Ichirou didn't catch him.

♤ ♠ ♤ The instant he’d smacked the table, Ro had regretted doing it, but he couldn’t very well take it back now. He had expected to wake up the man who had purchased him, and he felt bac about it. The blonde male had finally looked a bit at peace. The most calm and serene since Ro had met him earlier that morning. However, the tiger had not expected to have pistols pointed at him and he quickly threw his hands up and backed away slowly. ”I’m sorry. I didn’t mean it!” his eyes were wide and round, watching the barrel of both pistols, letting his eyes trail to the trigger in the man’s hand. This was not what he had wanted to experience. He had been so excited about figuring out a smell that was familiar that he had gotten carried away, and now he was being held up. Until the blonde male apologized and put them away. Once the pistols were out of his line of vision, Ro sagged a bit and put his hands down. It wasn’t really intended to cause a stir, but that seemed to be the only thing Ro was doing so far. He couldn’t find anything he wanted, and when questions came, they fizzled on his tongue into nothingness. He couldn’t figure out just what he wanted to ask, so when the opportunity was given by the blonde male, Ro choked a bit. It wasn’t his fault that it was so alarming, but Ro was utterly confused by this man who claimed to know him. The plaque downstairs had been registered to a Valentine Renatus, and so perhaps that was the man’s name? That’s where they could begin anyways, since this blonde male already knew what Ro’s name was. Looking over the blonde haired man once more, the tiger cleared his throat and moved to sit down across the table from him.
♤ ♠ ♤ He fidgeted only a few moments, sitting up straight and putting his hands on the table like a proper business man. Maybe he would gain more credibility that way? ”So…your name? It’s Valentine Renatus, right? That’s why it was on the plaque downstairs? You own the bar? It’s very…nice?” He wasn’t sure what to say about the bar, but it was probably the room with the homiest feelings, and somehow the tiger doubted it had anything to do with the actual man. Of course, the tiger didn’t want to be rude by saying that. It would be an insult, and Ro was trying very hard not to insult or upset this man more than he already had. And even if the blonde man denied it, Ro could tell. There was something about Valentine that made it easy for the tiger to read him. He was almost an open book, which was surprising seeming how stoic this man was. It was as if there was huge façade up around him and only Ro himself could peek through the cracks to see what was underneath. Maybe the man was telling the truth and they had been acquainted in the past. Not that it would do either of them any good now. There was no way Ro could remember anything. He’d tried hard to remember his name and he’d come up with his nightmares in the flesh. He didn’t like that, so he had stopped trying. When he looked at the blonde man, Ro was sure he expected more questions, but he was back to square one with what to ask. What questions would be good, and which ones bad? Which too emotional, and which superficial and unimportant? He didn’t know.
♤ ♠ ♤ He fidgeted with his fingers and pushed his hair behind his ear, looking down at his hands instead of across the table at a very intense Valentine. There were too many possibilities, and they seemed to weigh down heavier on the tiger than any of the punishments from his other Masters or Mistresses had. Here, there were expectations that he was certain he was failing already. There, he had known what they were, but here, he was expected to remember rather than be a blank slate that took orders and remembered peculiarities. Was he supposed to act a certain way here? Or only eat certain foods? Was he a worker? Or were they more? He was certain they were more, given the way Valentine had greeted him, but if he also worked downstairs, how would he ever remember how to make the drinks people ordered? He was certain if he had lived here, at some point, he’d known how to make drinks. Instead, he was fumbling over the thoughts in his head. He wrestled his thumb over his other and then looked at valentine, clinging t a subject mentioned briefly earlier. ”Tell me about your son. Our son? Seraph…. His name… Seraph, right? We…didn’t have him together right? I mean… we can’t…but he’s…supposed to be ours? Does he live here too?” Ichirou hoped this topic would be safe enough to discuss. He wasn’t sure, but it was his best bet at the current time. He couldn’t think of anything else, and at least it would give him a little background on what was going on in the house. He could know the other occupants this way, so he wasn’t alone or confused when others come to their lodgings. He looked to Valentine, hoping to hear more about this son of theirs, and hoping that maybe pieces would start clicking themselves together within his head. ♤ ♠ ♤ OoC: <3

X X X XXXXX X X X It wasn't his intention to scare Ichirou, but after having people trying to come and kill you more tan a dozen times... It was easy to get jumpy around loud noises. Especially when one was asleep. It wasn't the other man's fault and Valentine wasn't angry at him in the slightest. "I really am sorry about that... it's just that I really haven't slept in a couple of days." Flashing him a gentle smile, the blonde took his glasses off and started to rub his eyes with the hell of his hand. Putting them on the table, bright golden eyes looked over at the beautiful male sitting across from him. After all this time his tiger had been alive and so far away form him... It was best to leave those thoughts at that. Ichirou was back at his side, it didn't matter that his memories were gone! He was home and that was all that mattered. Perking up when he said his name, the Incubus watched him curiously. Did he remember him but that answer was answered quickly enough. "Yes. My name is Valentine Renatus and thank you... besides my son, that bar is my pride and joy." Leaning back in his chair, the blonde turned to look out a window. He was trying not to stare or watch him so much. Val could already tell that he was nervous. "There isn't a need to be so nervous. I'm not expecting you to do anything. I'm just happy that you're alive..."
Giving him a genuine smile, Val turned to face him, ready to answer any questions that he had, but the man was surprised by the silence. DId he have a lot of questions or not at all? Golden eyes watched the tiger fidget and look worried, which meant that Ichirou was trying to figure out safe questions. Questions that wouldn't hurt or disappoint him. Silly tiger. Hearing the question about Seraph made Val wonder if Ichirou was worried if he was going to be a disappointment. "We had been together for maybe two or three years when I decided to have him. You were really against it and wouldn't speak to me for quite a while, but you slowly started to come around. By the time Seraph was three or four, you had to baby sit him and ever since then you became Ichi and the mother to Seraph. He was quiet like you are... After you disappeared Seraph tried to fill your shoes and take care of me." It always made him embarrassed to admit that. Having your five year old bringing you dinner and clean... it made him pathetic. "He's going to graduate high school this year. He's Student Council President, top of his class in every subject including sports. He stays here more than I do, seeing as I am busy with my work at the mansion." It was rather odd that his son wasn't here at the moment, but he knew that he was safe, and more than likely having fun somewhere. "He will be excited to see you. He's missed you quite a bit.. I think that he loves you more than he does me."
Looking over at a clock, Val checked the time. He needed to get ready to open the bar, but he didn't want to leave Ichirou.... However, he had to eat. He made a promise to Seraph. "I... have to get ready to open the bar, so you can relax up here tonight. You can have the bed, I'll sleep on the couch." Pushing away from the table, the Incubus walked into the bathroom to take a shower. Turning the water to ice cold to cool his burning need. It was so hard to keep his hands to himself. Even though Ichriou didn't remember him, Valentine remembered everything. The blonde remembered how smooth and soft his skin was, how cute he was in the after glow of sex, and how he wasn't after to take the lead. All of these thoughts and desires just hit him hard and the Incubus knew that he had to find someone tonight. He didn't have a choice. Getting out and dressing in black slacks, a white shirt, and a black tie, Val was putting on his shoes when he looked up to see a familiar box. Frowning and grabbing it, shaky fingers ran across the top. How long had it been since he last looked inside? Five, six years maybe? He was tempted to hide it back in the closet when he thought of Ro.
Walking out of the room, Val looked around and finally found him, handing him the box. "Its pictures of us... all of us. You're more than welcome to look through them if you want." Placing the box in his hands, the blonde walked over to grab his glasses, slipping them onto his face. "Just promise to stay up here and don't wait up. I won't be back until the early morning. Help yourself to anything here and the remote to the Tv is on the coffee table. Have a goodnight." Looking over him once more, the blonde shut the door and began to open the bar. It was a rather busy night but Valentine brought in a lot of customers that night, as well as a few other food sources. His meal for tonight was two young but rather cute males that were waiting for him back in his stockroom. Closing down and locking the doors, Val looked at the clock to check the time. It was close to four so surely Ichirou would be asleep. Loosening his tie and walking into the room where his dinner was waiting, the Incubus got to work and wasted no time in playing with tonight's toys.
After an hour or so later, Valentine looked down at the panting, hot mess of tangled limbs. Panting heavily himself, the man began to clean up the mess of sweat, blood, and bloodily fluids before fixing his pants. He hated this. After feeding he felt disgusted with himself and it took everything inside of him not to throw up. Sighing and running a hand down his face, the blonde quickly wiped the boys' memories and sent them to a nearby hotel to sleep what was left of the night off. Now if he could only do the same thing... Walking upstairs and falling back on the couch, Val closed his eyes as he put an arm behind his head. Even if he didn't sleep at least he could relax knowing that his tiger was in the same building as him.
Stellaluna Skywind I'm so sorry for making you wait!! I hope that this post isn't too terrible!
