Some say Devil's Den hadn't originated as a valley; most say it had been a large plateau, jutting up from the desert, the closest thing the Land of Wind ever had to a mountain, they said. But something happened, and the plateau was crushed from the inside out, a certain being with immense strength caving most of it and breaking the sides with but a swat of its' tail. Legends say that Devil's Den became the home of Shukaku the Ichibi or One Tail.
At least, until he was captured and sealed, of course. For a while, Devil's Den became a bedtime story to scare children into behaving, "Don't make your sensei mad, or they'll send you off to Devil's Den!" There was really no danger, save for the few rogue ninja that took shelter there for a while, but Devil's Den was, all in all, deserted because of the mystery that shrouded it. It remained empty for a long, long while until people started to forget about it. Devil's Den became one with the desert, and finding it again, the once majestic landmark, was almost impossible.
However, the occasional sandstorm will sometimes cause a shinobi, or even an average person, to lost their way in the desert and somehow end up in a suddenly very convenient shelter. When that happens, they'd be better off facing the sandstorm rather than the more concerning danger that lies within the dark tunnels of Devil's Den; which is, in fact, where they have ended up. Shukaku the Ichibi had returned to his former nest and is quite content with the silence and solitude it brings him; and he's not forgive disturbance any time soon.
