The sodden blanket weighed heavily upon his haunches as the stallion plodded along. Thin rain drizzled around him, a hazy grey mist that he blended into perfectly. The constant pat-pat-pat covered up the squelching of his hooves into the mud. The rain didn't bother Casper too much, though. His fur was uncomfortably heavy, and cold was slowly seeping through his skin, sure, but these were but minor annoyances.
He cast a cold eye around his surroundings as a sigh blew through his nostrils. Lately every day was the same. Walking along, not really doing much. Yet, the whole reason he was walking was so that he would have something to do. A grumble rose in his throat.
His muscles burned to do something. Run, walk, explore, gallop, anything. The whole world was ahead of him, and he was wild and free. So how could he be so bored? Why was there nothing to do at all? He shook some water from his mane. His legs itched to keep moving, faster and faster. He wanted to run, just run. Some excitement in his life, even something to brighten this one moment, was all he wanted. But why would any sane person be out on such a miserable day? Resigning himself to his fate, he kept plodding on, keeping a sharp eye out for anything even vaguely of interest to him.

The mare skidded to a halt, curving as she did so along the soggy ground, sending up a spray of water and mud around her. Her sides heaved as she grinned, shaking her muddy, and damp mane from out of her eyes - one green, one purple, both bright and dancing with mischief. The weather was perfect, she didn't give a rat's butt about her appearance, yet it meant there was no around to make disapproving eyes at a mare of her age acting like a foal.
Of course she would have to make herself presentable before she went home to her dear mate, but that was a time in the future and Marut just wanted to have fun. She kicked her hooves free of excess mud, and took off at a canter, her long tail streaming behind her as she sped up, water flying off the end of the soggy hairs.
She let out a whinny as she exerted herself further, enjoying the feeling of hooves striking the earth, the tense and release of the muscles in legs and thighs, revelling in the speed, feeling as though she were flying across the earth. Rain whipped into her face, blurring her vision now and then until she blinked and shook her head. She'd just flicked her head again when she noticed the large, grey figure looming in the near distance and she kicked her speed up a notch, blowing straight past the stallion and then skidding to a halt with another brake turn that kicked up more mud.
Sides heaving she gave him a slightly muddy grin, giving him a brief once over to make sure she hadn't splattered him too much on her way past.

At first, the stallion thought he was hearing things. A faint thunk seemed to reach his ears, a sound easily lost amongst the pitter-patter of the pouring rain. Listening intently, he cast a searching eye through the foliage that surrounded him. Nothing particularly stood out. But there was it was again, he was sure of it. It was rhythmic. A constant sound. Thunk-thunk-thunk. And it was getting louder. Pricking his ears towards the noise, he let out a curious snort, boredom momentarily forgotten.
It was not long after that that a large blue-grey shape came shooting past him, skidding to a halt not far away, sending mud splashing out in all directions. He recoiled slightly, eyes shutting against the blobs of muck that splattered across him. Daring a peek once the worst seemed to have passed, he was met with a huge, muddy grin. Pricking his ears forwards attentively, he straightened himself up, giving himself a quick shake. Some of the mud flew off him as thousands of water drops were sent flying from his fur, only to be instantly replaced by the falling rain.
His own mouth twisted into a huge grin involuntarily. A rather attractive mare stood in front of him, covered in intricate markings and with a mane and tail that trailed down almost to the floor. She was splattered with mud, and her flanks heaving from her full-on gallop, giving her a rough appearance that made her seem extremely alive. Raising a teasing eyebrow at her, he chuckled, "Didn't anyone ever teach you not to get your mane all messed up?" He laughed gently, letting her know it was only in jest, knowing full well that he too looked an absolute mess.
The burning in his muscles returned, itching him to gallop around like she had been just a second ago. "Want to race?" He flashed her a huge grin.

Marut flicked her mane from her eyes again, the wretched thing having fallen back across. She regarded the slightly spattered stallion and gave a grin, trying not to laugh at what she'd done to the poor stranger. He didn't seem that bothered though.
'Did I do that?' she asked, nodding at his muddy form, and then chuckled. 'I'm sure they did, with little success as you can see.'
She raised a brow at the stallion, but smiled.
'Sure, though I like to the know the name of the one I'm about to beat.' she said, grinning at him again. Obviously she had no idea what his speed or stamina was like, and she was still gaining her breath, but she had a competitive streak. She did wonder how he managed to run with that blanket thing on his back, or why he had it at all. Something on her back like that all the time would annoy the hooves off her.

Casper let out a low chuckle at her teasing words, raising an eyebrow as he looked down at his own body. "No, mud just magically flies everywhere all the time for no reason." Brown speckles flecked his otherwise plain coat. At least the water was washing most of it away, not that he really cared. He pressed one ear forwards, "Tidy hair is massively overrated anyway."
Normally he would not be so forward, or so easy to talk to, but the itching in his legs distracted him from his moodiness, and the sodden weather seemed to break normal social boundaries. He pawed against the ground with one leg, letting the tip of his hoof gauge a small crevice in the earth. It quickly filled up with muddy rain-water, hiding it from view. His tail flicked eagerly behind him.
Her competitive streak was almost infectious, electrifying every nerve in his body. "Ha! Then you don't need to know my name." He felt like he could race against lightning. He felt alive and wild and free. Arching his neck for a second, he stretched luxuriously, feeling his cold muscles start to awaken. He reached around to pull the water-logged blanket through the string holding his pendant up, securing it against his body so he wouldn't lose it.
It was pretty much dead-weight at this point, but he wouldn't abandon it after carrying it for so long. He gave her a wink, "But just so you know who to contact about a re-match when you lose, the name's Casper."

'Yup, that's right. Mud is a tricksy thing that way.' the mare said with a chuckle of mischief as she shook her front hooves again, stomping off the excess mud. She already knew her mane probably looked a fright, and gave him a quick wink as he talked about tidy hair.
'I'm sure it is..but then you don't have much to worry about.' she said, feeling her breathing evening out and her heart rate lowering as they continued to talk. Her leg muscles were nicely warmed up and if they chatted much longer, she'd have completely caught her breath and would definately be ready to make him eat her mud..again.
She grinned at the stallion, liking his cheek and strode right up to him, flicking her mane from her mis-matched eyes and splattering him with the wet from it.
'True, I just need to know I beat you - Casper. You should know mine..it's Marut. A winner's name.'

The water from her mane splashed all over his already damp body. He recoiled with a loud laugh, blinking as a few drops hit him right in the eyes. Everything blurred for a moment, and as it cleared he found himself starring at a pair of mis-matched eyes. His ears pricked up in surprise, he hadn't noticed how peculiar they were before, with her long mane drooping across them.
He raised an eyebrow at her name. It was unusual, and though he had no idea if it had any sort of meaning, it certainly sounded like a good, strong name. That was it. "Oh, you are so going down." No 'winning name' would be the best of him!
He gave himself a quick stretch, feeling his cold muscles awaken again. That was one of the problems with rain, it sapped the heat straight out of you. Nothing he could do about that though, there was no way he'd ask for a warm up round now, not after he'd issued such a challenge. He dropped down into a slight crouch, building up the tension in his legs so he could shoot off as quickly as possibly. His body felt eager and alert, adrenaline spiking through his veins as his heart pounded with excitement.
"On my mark then. Three..." He gave her a giant grin, teeth gritting together with concentration. "Two..." He dropped even lower, feeling the power building up, switching his gaze to the open expanse before him. "One..." He shifted slightly, sending his weight forwards, ready to shoot off. "Go!"

'Sure,' she said, nodding, the last few muddy drops falling as she did so.
'I will be laying down at the finish post waiting for you to catch up.' Marut grinned, it had been a long time since she'd verbally jousted with anyone like this other than her dear mate Raniero, and whilst she was feeling slightly wit-rusty, it was coming back to her the longer she spoke to this stallion.
She watched as he stretched, swishing her tail as she waited for him to be ready. They hadn't decided on a place that the race would end, but that was fine with her, they could just race until he flagged. She grinned again. She took her place next to him and then tensed, waiting for the go and then she surged forwards as he shouted it, feeling the usual rush of euphoria and adrenaline as she galloped. Marut didn't set off at the fastest pace she could, preferring to hold back some energy for a sprint finish when her opponent looked to be flagging.
