The rising sun slowly stretched it rays into the den to gently caress Hana'Hofu's pelt while she slept. What you'd think would be a pleasant warmth proved to be a huge pain in the tail as the light shone directly in her eyes. Forced awake, Hana clenched her eyes tightly and screwed up her face. Groaning in irritation, she lifted her head and dragged herself farther into the den - and the shade. Licking her lips to show her distaste quickly turned into a giant yawn, after which all of Hana's anger had evaporated.

Blinking the sleep from her eyes, Hana gazed around the den. The rest of her family - who had had the foresight to get comfortable near the back of the den before falling asleep - were still sleeping peacefully; as she looked, one of her brothers kicked his back paw in a dream. Chuckling softly, she returned her attention outside and was jolted wide awake. The sun had woken her up!

Picking her way around her siblings so she wouldn't wake them up, she made her way over to her father. As soon as she reached him, she dropped all caution; crouching low, she waggled her rump before leaping as high as she could. Landing on her father's shoulders, she playfully grabbed one of his ears in her jaws and tugged on it while pummeling his back with her hind paws.

"Wake up, Dad!" she growled, her voice muffled around his ear.

He hadn't slept well, having continued his new routine of busily pacing around his cubs as they slept. Anxiously waiting for his mate to return, while also alert to any signs of danger. But now, he was resting, heaving shallow breaths as he was lulled off to sleep by the silly snores of his first litter. The new loves of his life. Just as his eyes were finally heavy enough to allow for sleep, something began to tug at his ear playfully, and as much as his body yearned to sleep his heart had other plans.

Slowly he raised an eye to peek at the excitable cub, Hana. He wanted to snort a small laugh but held it in, thinking it more enjoyable to feign sleep as long as he could. She was a bit impatient, and well he liked to drive her a little crazy. After all, what parent didn't?

Her muffled voice only furthered his enjoyment and he made a big deal of rolling onto his back and yawning as he scratched his belly.

"Mrrr ... No honey i'm not hungry ..."

He mumbled the first words he could think of as he playfully patted his daughter away with his free paw.

"Hungry? What? Who's hungry?" Hana responded, with confusion and impatient irritation clear on her face as her father gently pushed her away. Come to think of it, she was a little hungry. But that could wait. Jumping back on top of her father, she climbed up his belly to stand on his chest and glare at him. "We're going to miss it, Dad!"

Glancing over her shoulder to check outside, she was relieved to see that the light was still the grayish hue of early dawn. They hadn't missed the sunrise yet, but they would if Dad kept being a lazy lump. She began nudging her father's chin while repeating "Dad! Dad! Dad!". Her nudges grew stronger and more insistent, until she all but headbutted Vodnitvar's cheek. A little dazed from the force of her own attack, she lost her balance and slipped from her father's chest to land awkwardly on the ground beside him. She quickly scrambled to her paws and continued her harassment of Voddy by once again grabbing an ear.

Voddy's ears perked a slight bit at this new information. What were they going to miss? Was there something he was supposed to do today? A quick sweep of his exhausted mind gave him nothing to go on. There wasn't a single thing planned, at least not that he could think of. But then his adorable daughter was so flustered over whatever it was she was going on about. It almost made him want to wake up ... almost.

Inside he was giggling a fit, but on the outside he was a blank slate, no emotion, just closed eyes. But then the weight on his belly shifted and he heard Hana's rear settle uncomfortably on the ground. Startled, he opened one eye, only to see her go right back to tugging at his ear.

"Alright, alright i'm up!

You're such a stubborn little thing!"
He shot his daughter a disapproving glare before rolling off of his belly and to his feet.

"Always be stubborn, it confuses your enemies." He whispered into her ear before looking around quizzically. Sure enough, everyone else was still asleep. Then what ...

"So what's the rush? What're we going to miss?!"

Hana felt a brief flash of satisfaction as her father gave in to her annoyances and got to his paws. It was replaced by indignation at being called stubborn; usually, 'stubborn' was something that Mom and Dad called each other when the other was being bad. But when Vodnitvar whispered his advice to her, his breath tickling Hana's ear fur, she brightened up. Apparently, stubborn could be good.

At her father's query, her urgency returned. "The sun!" she hissed, trying to keep her voice low. Her tone suggested that it should be obvious what they were going to miss, although she had never told Voddy that she wanted to see the sunrise. "We have to go down to the ocean and watch it change the water to fire!"

In truth, what Hana was saying wasn't overly coherent. The day before, she had heard a couple of pride mates discussing the sunset and the beautiful colors in the sky. She, of course, had already been in the den and unable to see the spectacle. During their conversation, one lioness had said that the sunrise was her favorite time of the day because of the "brief, wonderful heartbeat when it set the ocean on fire". Hana was too young to understand that the lioness wasn't being literal, and was completely amazed that the sun could actually light anything on fire, let alone water.

Running underneath Vodnitvar, Hana tried to shove him in the direction of the beach by headbutting his leg. "If we don't hurry, we'll miss it! It only lasts a heartbeat!" Again, not literally, but how could Hana know that?

To say that he was caught off guard by his daughter's urgency was an understatement. But to say he wasn't confused about what she was so excited for, was a lie. He tried to stand there with a straight face, and nod in understanding, but it just wasn't in him. Instead his lips slowly crept into a cheshire grin as he stabilized himself against her playful headbutts.

"Oh well if that's all...." He chuckled as he reached a paw around and tugged at Hana's tail gently. "Come on hop up or we'll miss it!" He winked at his daughter as he pulled her close enough to pick her up by the scruff of her neck. Quickly placing her on his back.

"But we have to be quiet or everyone will want to come! Then we'll miss it for sure." Nodding up at Hana he double checked that she was secure before attempting to tip toe out of the den slowly.

At first, when her father grinned at her, Hana thought he was going to continue to tease her. Usually she wouldn't have minded, but this was important! There was no time to be silly!

She smiled with relief and excitement as he swung her up through the air; burrowing into his mane, she tangled her paws up and dug her claws into the thick fur. Trying hard to be quiet, she nodded enthusiastically when Voddy looked back to check on her. She definitely didn't want to wake anyone - if they made her miss the sunrise, she'd really have their tails.

Hana dug her claws in deeper as Voddy started to creep out of the den. As his shoulders rolled underneath her, she concentrated on balancing. The last thing she needed was to fall off.

The feel of his daughter clinging to his back brought with it a sense of accomplishment to the older male. He not only had a family of his own, but he had a family who loved him. And he in turn would love them unconditionally for the rest of his life. A smile came to his face as the two finally exited the den. The crisp morning air crept into his nostrils and he inhaled deeply. A quick glance at the horizon told him they time was nearly upon them.

Gently he lowered himself to the ground to allow his daughter to climb off. "Alright miss boss lady. You tell me, where's the most perfect place ever to watch the sun catch the ocean on fire?" He purred his words as he waited for her response.

"Remember if we don't get it just right we might miss it. So you have to pick the most perfect spot there ever was!"

The dawn air had a bite to it; cold claws probed Hana's skin, and as she clambered down from her father's back, she fluffed her pelt up against the chill.

"Errr.." Hana was stumped. It hadn't occurred to her that the vantage point was so important, but now that her father had mentioned it she felt silly for not considering it before.

Her first thought was the cliffs; she definitely wanted a view that would provide a head-on angle and an overhead angle. But even if they had the time to climb the cliffs, Dad would never take her up there.

As the moments dragged past, she became aware that she was wasting time. In her panic, she suddenly spotted a large rock sticking out of the sand on the beach. It was perfect! Gesturing with her tail, she pointed out their destination. She was about to sprint off when her parents' numerous warnings about being careful near the water jumped into her head, and so she forced herself to pad patiently beside her father.

Vodnitvar watched with interest as his daughter tried her best to point out the perfect position. "Remember Hana, picking a location for anything is very important. Especially in battle. If you can do the job here? Well imagine what you could do in the field?" He grinned his awkward, toothy grin and ruffled his daughter's mane a bit. He could tell she was having some inner turmoil, but he had no doubts that someone as strong willed as her, would find a way.

Sure enough, it took her only minutes to find a new destination. Silently, he was thankful his daughter hadn't requested the cliffs. It was far too early in the morning, and the cold chilly air was not being polite to his joints. But for a moment like this? He would do anything in his power to witness it.

As Hana darted off, he began to choke out a warning. But it quickly caught in his throat, she was getting older. She could do this on her own, it was just as he'd been telling Fireheart for a bit now. Its time to let them grow. But as he soon noticed, Hana had chosen to wade by his side. Something that warmed his heart from the inside out.

As the two approached the rock, he placed a paw on Hana's shoulder, and signaled for her to wait. He then climbed the rock himself, certain that it was in stable condition.

It was in perfect condition. He nodded in approval and reached down to grab Hana by the scruff of the neck. Gently plopping her on the rock in front of him, he took a large whiff of the ocean's mist and smiled softly.

"I don't think you could have picked a better spot, if you'd planned for days ...

What do you think?"

Hana tried to wait patiently while her father tested out the stability of the rock. She nearly knocked his teeth out when he bent to pick her up because she was bouncing with joy.

Once on the rock, Hana inhaled deeply, relishing the salty air and the gentle wind coming in off the ocean. Even after the terrifying spectacle of the shark from her youth, Hana loved the ocean. Even now, she was starting to become mesmerized in the calmly lapping waves as she distractedly answered her father.

"I think this is awesome, Dad."

Hana suddenly realized that the waves were changing; while the deeper water remained a dark turquoise, the light reflected on the surface was turning from white to yellow.
Shifting her gaze to the horizon, she saw that the sun was rising. Fully attentive she continued to watch as the yellow darkened to orange, then burst into a bright, fiery red as the sun had risen more than halfway from the clutches of the ocean.

Her aqua eyes grew wide with wonder, and they too began to reflect the sun's flame. With her mouth slightly agape, she tore her gaze from the sight for a brief heartbeat to see if her father was seeing what she saw.

It was a moment he wouldn't soon forget. Though it had little to nothing to do with the way the sun fell across the ocean. No, it was all about the look on his daughter's face. The look of sheer awe and amazement, it was something he just couldn't see everyday. It was a keepsake, he would lock deep in his heart and never forget. He smiled fondly as he glanced down at Hana. As happy as she was to see the sunrise, he was to see her smile.

"Definitely awesome."

He whispered, lightly licking his daughter's forehead gently.
