IC The sun was just beginning to shine brightly over the Home Tree Briella resided in. The forest floor was cast in deep shadows from the overhead canopy and glowing fungi broke the darkness. The sounds of birds and large insects could be heard throughout the expanse of forest canopy overhead, gently waking Briella up from sleep.
The tree is empty. Niebet, Maya, Dyakida: all gone. Even Teiluj, the new child to their home that constantly added noise and commotion was nowhere to be found. The insides of the makeshift house was silent, but outside a soft soft sound could be heard.
Crying. There was crying coming from outside.

Briella yawned as she awoke, rolling over in her bed. She was still so sleepy. Though as she lay there a strange feeling rolled over her, causing her to sit up. Where was all the noise? Sure their tree wasn't the loudest out there, but she was use to hearing at least movement or Maya teaching Teiluj something. Then there were the two little sprites and the radaku that were her and her sisters companions, but she couldn't hear them either. "Amadi..." she called out curiously. He never left her side.
Getting up she started to walk around the tree and found that there was no one. Not even the Elder who rarely left the tree. Where had they all gone? And without her? Briella began to panic and ran back to her room, gathering her bag with some supplies as well as her two swords. Something just wasn't right.
And then she could hear noise, but it wasn't coming from her tree. It was coming from outside, and she was pretty sure it was coming from outside. Maybe it was Teiluj? She had heard the youngling cry before and although she was pretty sure Teiluj wouldn't be out alone and crying she couldn't be certain.
Rushing out of the three Briella made her way towards the crying noise, hoping for an explanation.

Outside, under the base of a nearby tree, a little youngling could be seen hiding between the roots of the forest. Her yellow skin and antenae were sure signs of being an Alkidike, even as far as from the Home Tree this could be easily seen.
Her back was turned to Briella and her body could be seen shaking with the sobs that escaped from her lips. her short cut hair was covering her face and her body was pinched into the smallest ball she could make it.
Her antenae twitched at Briella's appearence outside of the tree, but that only made her cry harder. She still didn't turn to face Briella, but wiped her nose with her arm, continuing her cries.

As she got closer Briella realized that it wasn't Teiluj's cries, but it was a youngling and this one looked to be fully Alkidike. Briella looked around, there wasn't any other trees around them that housed their sisters? What was this youngling doing so far from home and all alone.
The closer she got it seemed that she just started to cry harder, but then again the little girl hadn't seen her so many she thought she was an Earthling out to hurt her? "There there sister child, why are you crying?" she said putting her swords in their sheaths on her back. She didn't get too close to the child, she didn't want to harm her, but she had moved around so she was in the little girls view. Hopefully she would she would see that Briella was there to help her not hurt her.
Looking around Briella tried to spot any other movement in the forest. Where was her mother? She didn't look like any of the Alkidike that Briella was close to so she didn't know who her mother was. Then again it had been some time since she saw some of her sisters. "I'm Briella, what's your name?" she asked as she crouched down and brought her attention back to the girl. Hopefully she could tell Briella was what going on.

The little Alkidike girl rubbed her nose against her arm again, turning to face Briella. Her eyes were glossy with tears and her face was red from rubbing it so hard.
The little one sniffed and wrapped her arms around her legs.
"I'm- I'm Ilyra." She rubbed her eyes with her hands, smothering her face with wet tears. "Grown ups are so mean!" And she continued to cry.
It was clear the girl was upset over something, and quite possibly lost all at the same time. It was true that there weren't any other trees around the area that homed Alkidike, so where did the girl come from?

Briella held back a laugh. Here she thought that something was terribly wrong when the young girl was just having a temper tantrum. She remembered those. She looked around once more, not sure what she should do. "Yea they are aren't there? Good thing I never have to become one." she said with a nod. She hoped to get the girl to stop crying and maybe even to trust her. If the girl came to trust her then she was more likely to tell her what was going on.
Holding her hand out to the girl Briella smiled. "Your getting all dirty out here, wanna come back to my tree? I just got some yummie fruit earlier if you want some." she offered. Hopefully Maya or the others would show up soon. They were older so they would be more experienced with kids, plus she knew the Elder knew more people so maybe she knew this young one.

The little one sniffed and continued to wipe her nose on her arms. She rubbed her eyes with her fists and looked up at Briella with wide eyes. "You don't grow up?"
She was young enough to believe Briella and wondered how it could be so. She took Briella's hand and shakily stood up. The girl looked like she hadn't moved in a while, if the weakness in her legs were a sign. "Ok..." As if in response to Briella's offer to go inside, the little girl's stomach let out a small gurgle.
The little girl let Briella lead the way and the conversation. She still had tears smugded across her face and her nose was dripping.

Briella smiled, it was working! She had stopped crying, and when the little girls stomach started to make noises she smiled. "Oh yea, you see us Alkidike are special. And if we really think about it, and have the right tools, then we don't have to grow up." she offered the younger girl. Of course Briella was speaking metaphorically, but she remembered being a youngling and if this girl was anything like she was at that age she would want to know more, which would keep her distracted.
When they got in the tree Briella brought her to the kitchen, still wondering where the others could be. She sat the little girl at the table and grabbed a few of the fruits so she could choose what she wanted to eat. "So Ilyra, what brings you all the way out here? I've never seen you around here. We have a sister about your height that lives here also. If she was here she would be so happy to see you." she offered with a smile. She wasn't sure what Ilyra would think of the halfbreed, but she had a feeling it would be okay. Children were normally better with those kinds of things.
She took a bite of the fruit and smiled, hoping the girl would do the same. Her legs were weak, maybe some food and water would make her stronger. Remembering that the girl could be thirsty Briella brought her a cup filled with water. The little girl had a story to tell, of that Briella was sure.

The right tools? What tools were those? This alkidike lady must be magical. Ilyra didn't know what to make of this girl. Maybe she would share her secrets with Ilyra?
She took the fruit that Briella had offered and took a small nibble. The juices of the fruit were sweet and had the girl devouring more. The sticky juice stuck to her face and just added to the mess of dried things already there. She grabbed the water cup and took a large gulp before looking Briella in the eye. "What kind of tools do you need to never grow up?" Her look was serious. "Are there tools that can make you grow up faster?" The inquisition in her eyes was intense and was easy to tell that something was on the young girl's mind.
She ignored Briella's question. This was a more important conversation right now and she needed answers. Maybe this lady could help her.

She watched the younger girl eat, with a smile. She seemed to be starving. How long had it been since she ate? She handed the girl a cloth to wipe her face, she was making a mess, but it was up to the girl to use it. Breilla was scared to tell the girl to wash her face, that was a grown up thing to do and it was evident that this little girl didn't like grown ups.
When the youngling started asking questions instead of answering the ones Briella had asked she realized that maybe her plan was going to backfire. There were no actual tools to growing older or younger. It was a metaphor. But then again this girl was young, so it made sense that she didn't understand that. Okay, she needed to think fast. What would Dyakida or Maya do?
"Yes there are ways to grow up faster. But why would you want to do that? And to get the tools you have to go on a journey." Yes this was better. Plus it was true journeys could make you grow older, like Maya did when she left.

Ilyra put down her water cup and took the cloth Briella offered. She eyed Briella cautiously. She needed details. She needed to know how she could grow up fast.
"I need to grow up faster! No one listens to me when I tell them I'm ready." the girl was pouting now. "I'm ready to have a weapon and train and they won't listen! Take me on a journey to get older!"
The girl looked like she was barely old enough to have the strength to hold a spear or blades, but she was determined. This had to work.
The young girl looked at Briella with stern determination. "I left home to prove that I'm old enough!" She was clearly upset and the tears started to form in her eyes again.
She shook her head to clear the tears and turned back to her fruit, taking large angry bites.

Briella frowned. This little girl, she might as well have been looking at herself when she was the same age. Briella had begged to be trained, to have her own weapons, and everyone turned her down. Instead she practiced as best as she could with sticks and waited to use the real weapons till she was allowed. Well, besides the few times she 'borrowed' them. However the little girl did give her a piece of information. So she had left home.
Part of Briella had wished the girl had be kicked out or something, just so that she could stay there in the tree. There was something about her spirit that called to Briella. Oh well, if she ran away from home then it was Briella's job to take her back. Her mother or mothers must be worried sick about her.
"I will take you on this journey. However you have no weapons right now, and we have none to spare. We must go back to your home to get them." she suggested. Part of her hoped she could convince the girls mothers to let Ilyra stay with her. They couldn't have been too worried or else they would have found her already. "How long have you been gone? I think that this growing up journey might have already started for you and you didn't even know it yet."

Ilyra looked up at Briella with a confused look on her face. Already started? What did she mean? Was it that easy to get older that she already started? What was it? Was it the fruit she was eating? She looked down at the fruit and inspected it. It looked ordinary enough.
"How did I already start?" She looked at Briella with more confusion on her face. She didn't understand this lady. She was being all weird with her answers.
"I don't want to go home until I'm grown up. Can't we find weapons somewhere else?" She pleaded with Briella to not take her back. "The sisters on the island don't understand, ever." She complained. "They don't care about me, they only want to keep me from growing up! I've been gone for longer than I can count, and they haven't even looked!" She was about to cry again. This young girl was a whirl of young emotions and they burned hot.

"Well you left home, therefor you started the journey by yourself, in that you have started the process of growing up." she said as she watched the girl look over the fruit with a smile. Ah, this was proving more impossible as time went by. She wasn't sure what was the right thing to do, the right thing to say.
"No, there are no other weapons good enough for a fierce sister such as yourself. Listen. I will go with you. I will go to the island, there we can tell the sisters that you are staying with me. That I will take care of you, and I will teach you how to grow up faster." she told Ilyra moving around to kneel by the younger girl. Oh she felt for her, if she had been gone as long as she said she should have been found! She was angry with her sisters back on the island.
"Ilyra, I won't let them do that to you. I left the island with some sisters because everyone wanted to treat me like a child, and I didn't like it. I'm respected at home, they will listen to me." Or at least she hoped that they would. Even if they didn't she wouldn't go down without a fight.

Ilyra's crying was reduced to a soft sniffling as she listened to Briella's promise.
She took the cloth she used to wipe her mouth and wiped her nose aggressively. "Will you really teach me to grow up?" She snapped her head down and stared at the floor under her feet. "How do I know you're not lying like the other grown ups?" She wanted to believe so badly that Briella was telling the truth. That they would go to the island and get weapons to keep and that they would leave again. She didn't belong with the others, they all wanted to keep everything from Ilyra.
Briella seemed to know exactly what Ilyra was going through, and while it made her happy to have someone who understood, it also made her worry. What if Briella was just making it up? She looked back at Briella with large eyes waiting for an answer to her questions.
