Text from Clarice: Simon says you're due for a promo! (He hates when I phrase it like that ;D) Be at H's office in the Life labs at 1300 tomorrow.

Lex had already been texting back and forth with Otto about how he needed to dress nice for a date with Eva when Clarice's text came, catching the Vegas native off guard. The Doctor wanted - ordered, actually - to see him? He gulped, putting the phone down. What had he done? Nothing, come to think of it. No deep research projects, nothing worthy of a bad or good presence request. Maybe that was why, though? Lex hand't contributed to the division at all, as much evidenced by the last Life meeting.
His sleep was troubled that night, plagued with tossing, turning, and the occasional frightened imagining of the Doctor ordering a division change, or worse. Every Hunter cost money, and why would he wish to keep putting money into something that didn't produce results? Hunter layoff wasn't a very pleasant option. He finally just gave up on sleep and took to running around the training field, and managed to squeeze in a power nap from 6 in the morning to 8.
Five minutes before the Doctor's set time, there was a knock on his door. "Doctor? It's Lex, may I come in?"

Unlike Lex, Madeline was about as worried as a rock. Her plain old "what will be will be" habit had kicked in as soon as she'd received the text, even though some part of her wondered if pranking the other trainees mercilessly and nearly torturing Ami into strangling her last month had anything to do with this sudden call to arms for - what was it again? - a promo? She wasn't quite sure if this was going to be one of those "level up!" things or a bloody big mess of lost limbs and burnt hair.
Slipping out of her dorm room and trotting down to the doctor's office, Madeline skidded to a halt when she spotted a familiar back (sadly clothed). Oops. Well, her father had always told her she would one day jump into bed with the wrong person. The part about the baby and the moving to the Bahamas to outrun the law part didn't exactly fit into the current equation, but hey, he was right about one thing at least.
"I knew sleeping with you would get me into trouble." She teased, nudging him out of the way with her hip to push the door open and peak in before glancing back at the Life trainee. "Wait - why are you here too, Lex?"

seeing Madeline and hearing Madeline were just two ways to announce the same thing; mischief and gratuitous shenanigans would soon abound. He had to give a coy smile, however, even as she brought up another reason as to why he might have been called into the Doctor's office. Maybe he'd slept around too much? Deus didn't have sex rules, did they?
"Text from Clarice saying I'm required to see the Doctor at 1 today. You?" He nudged her with an elbow, eyes implying that she'd messed something up in the labs. Probably made a tech fall into a vat of refined FEAR by getting him flustered, or something like that. "Oh, don't tell me you regret it." He teased at her earlier comment. He didn't- but if Ami found out Lex had slept with Madeline before they were dating it was highly likely that she'd lose a lot of respect for him.

"I'm having a sexy, top secret affair with the doctor." Madeline drawled, folding her arms and quirking her hip to one side. "We've decided that you've proved your worth as a man of worth and are inducting you into a steamy threesome. Didn't you get the memo? I even brought the handcuffs. None of that s**t fuzzy stuff, these are hardcore, straight-up, and they've got your name on them."
After a moment, she waggled her eyebrows and giggled. "Nah, look." She flipped open her phone and waved the screen in Lex's face. "I guess it's promo time - but I'm not entirely certain that isn't just a nice word for time to execute you in the most gruesome way we know how." After all, Deus wasn't exactly known for its straight-forwardness.
"I never regret anything I do." She grinned at him with a predatory like smirk. "Don't tell me you do."

Madeline garnered an actual snort from the man, who thought it completely possible. Not to call Madeline a sleeze, but she held the same sexual values that Lex did before Ami. Sex was another way to have fun, and even a good bit of cardio. The Doctor was also completely plausible - the man, though eerie and frightening at times, was one of class and the finer things. Madeline enjoyed those things. Another snort was garnered when she brought Lex into the picture, and ended in the Life trainee simply chuckling at her.
"Hmm...well, I don't know why I would be promoted - or why the Doctor would be doing your promotion either." Lex mused after having calmed himself a little. The Doctor did want to see them both at the same time, though. How very odd...
"No, not really. Ami probably won't even want to try some of the more interesting adventures we had." He coughed, changing gears. He was glad Madeline was perfectly fine with their little arrangement ending, but he felt he needed to clarify the next things, else Ami's wrath fall on him like golf ball sized hail. "Speaking of her - she doesn't know we ever explored together, and I intend to keep it that way."

Behind the two, the doctor's voice rolled out smoothly, "Well this has been quite informative, but I do believe we have some small business to attend to, my dears." He reached past Madeline to open the to his office and usher the two of them in. "Do take a seat, I have a few things to ask you." As they settled, he slid into his own comfortable leather seat and glanced at the small pile of paper work waiting for him. A sigh followed, and the doctor was leaning back, fingers steepled.
"First, tell me, have either of you had any dreams out of the usual as of late?"

Tensing a bit as the doctor's voice sounded behind the two, Lex stood a little more at attention. To say the doctor frightened him would be inaccurate - it was more of a severe respect, like one has for their militaristic grandfather. The doctor had never even said a harsh word to him, that Lex could remember, but it was simply his presence. The way he moved and smiled commanded Lex's full attention.
Sitting straight backed in one of the chairs of his office, Lex listened, turned to Madeline, and gave his answer. "The latest odd dream I can recall would be... one where I was talking to myself. But it wasn't the me that I knew, if that makes sense sir." His lip curled in mild frustration. How to exactly describe that? "Apparently he was from some...dream dimension?"

Lex's response might have been thoughtful and even interesting; another person from a dream dimension that was supposed to be him? Neat.
Madeline, however, was not that thought-provoking, thoughtful person with neat responses about people from dream dimensions.
"Zombies." Madeline said, side-eyeing Lex's sudden call to attention once the doctor appeared. She'd settled into her seat like a proper princess, folding one ankle over the other and crossing her arms over her chest, a drastic differentiation from Lex's straight-backed posture. "I dream about zombies. And baseball. And that hasn't changed in a really long time."
There, question answered. Now what the hell did this have to do with promotions?

"Excellent, neither of you seem affected," the doctor pulled out several files and placed the on the desk before them. "Excalibur is stirring," he stated without further preamble, "...it seems to be seeking out a new wielder, and using dreams as a medium. We have people checking those on island, awake and asleep in pods for any indication as to who may turn out to be the Once and Future King." The doctor gave the title with a sort eye-rolling bemusement, his tone remaining consistently light and conversational.
"These are external locations, places where data sweeps indicate at least several people having dreams similar to what we've been looking for. What you'll be doing is going into at least one of these areas and taking down specific information on the locals' recent dreams." The doctor's smile widened, "You'll have to go undercover, of course, but I have every bit of confidence in your ability to be completely unremarkable."
1) Pick up to three different places around the world for your hunters to work in! 2) Go undercover! You can go for the mystic approach, or a more clinical "psychological dream study" - but your hunters need to come up with a viable context for them to get strangers to tell them their personal information (at the very least their name and age) and their more recent dreams 3) Get the information, you can either write these civilians yourself or have other players come in and play the npcs. For each interview roll 1d6 to determine the results. rolls ---1: sex dream ---2: nightmare ***3: a dream containing a shining sword that haunts and beckons to them at turns even during waking hours ---4: embarrassing dream ***5: a dream of a dream, a long rest in a crystal cave, an island hidden in the mists ***6: a dream of profound darkness, of ultimate power suddenly brought short by terrible captivity, of a patient road toward vengeance
4) Add the dice up as you go, when they reach a cumulative result of at least 40 (both combined) ~ they'll have gathered enough information to write and post an adequate report. Their new coats will be waiting for them after they turn it in.

Lex gave the man across the table a look of questioning confidence. He understood that they were being assigned to basically be shrinks, or even gypsies (because everyone knew Madeline would want to go that route), but the way he phrased it... Lex wasn't sure if he should take in a compliment or an insult? Complisult? Sure, he'd go with that one. "Yes sir, understood." He nodded, fingering through the files and passing them to Madeline after he'd given them all a brief scan.
Leaning forward, Lex gave a funny little half smile at the doctor before asking a question. "Sir, what would happen if Excalibur did chose someone? Would they be the new head of Deus?" He could tell by H's behaviors that the man thought of it as a joke, and Lex honestly did too, but there was an itching in his brain that told him to ask anyway.

Once handed the files, Madeline flipped through them with something almost like brisk professionalism, listening to the conversation with rare attention, given her normal attitude. "Fun." She muttered, almost to herself. Glancing up, she smiled at H, a row of white teeth that seemed to make up a shark-like expression. "That's generous of you, sir. We'll make sure not to let you down."
She side-eyed Lex with an expression that said right, Lex?
Which meant, of course, that this mission was going to Hell in a shoebox as soon as they got out of the office. Not half as interested in the answers as Lex might have been, Madeline stood up, pulling Lex to his feet too once they were answered. She'd brushed past location names in the files - Singapore, Portugal, Ukraine - and was itching to get going, whether Lex was ready or not.
"Let's have some fun." She hissed in Lex's ear.
Good luck, bro.

The doctor gave them a droll smile, "Deus? I suppose if they were willing to settle for ruling a single small island of no particular value, then yes. Yes, they would indeed."

"Well, let's hope that whoever is the Once and Future King isn't unambitious, or we might all be out of a job." Madeline remarked dryly, mimicking the smile with a shark-toothed grin, and promptly dragged Lex out of the room to begin their super stealthy undercover mission.

Lex gave the doctor a distant look, as though his gears were turning over the concept of the Once and Future King. So Excalibur could...oh, oh my....
He gave a hurried thank you to his boss, and once out of the door gave Madeline the most severe and threatening smile he could muster - which was just his normal carefully crafted charming smile with the usual sparkle being replaced with a cold fire. "Madeline, if you screw this up, we could be in a world of trouble. You do understand that, right? If anyone finds us suspicious, we're completely screwed." He coughed, straightening out his coat. She always had been a bit dominant. "Anyway - where do you think we should head first? Singapore?"
Madeline...in Singapore...he was in for a day. What would they even pose as? He started, but stopped himself. No - she was not deciding that for Singapore. Portugal maybe, but God forbid she blow their cover in Singapore.
