When all else fails, there was always studying to fall back on. Well, generally - perhaps not if the world spontaneously imploded, but, y'know, minor catastrophes wasn't near enough to quell THE POWER OF STUDYING!!

Or at least she'd thought that that was so, but this minor catastrophe was beginning to seriously change her mind. For one thing, the annoying (and slightly alarming) fog was everywhere and the weird whispers just would not stop. Every time she thought they were finally gone they'd come back, sometimes whispering of random things and other times simply too indistinct to make out. It was driving her mad and definitely not making concentrating on the book in her hand any easier - and it wasn't like she was the most naturally inclined to study in the first case. Practice and neccesity had made her better, but this wasn't for her grades and it was hard to relax when nearly every rustle of a tree had her jumping for fright.

Maybe she should've just stayed inside, but Leo hadn't been sure she could stand being cooped up right now and studying outside had seemed like a good idea. At the time. She was beginning to change her mind.

Mort was more jumpy than ever and he hated it. Hated every second of feeling like his grip was slowly slipping, slowly turning into a suspicious glance at Belladonna's smiles, into second guesses at even small details, into taking everything the worst way because that's just how his mind worked now. His hands were constantly balling into fists in his pockets from the rising anxiety he had in his chest, a shadowy vicegrip he couldn't let go no matter how much he tried to relax. It chafed on him, it chafed on his ghoulfriend, and it chafed on his friends he was sure. He still remembered the hiss Aymet had given him when Mort had raised a fist out of surprise . . .

Head ducked, he had been shuffling around outside for want of somethign to occupy his mind when he saw Leo; he had to blink a few times to make sure it was her, for the ghoul looked different than the one in his (admittedly hazy) mind. "Er . . . Leo?" he called tentatively, pausing in mid-step. The fog was making it hard to see, and now that he had spoken . . . Mrrr, he guessed he ought to head over and see if he had made a mistake. Again.

It took a few seconds for the sound of her name to register, and then another couple of seconds to determine that it wasn't in her own head. And so, slightly belated, Leo blinked and said "Yes?" a lot more tentatively than she normally would have done. Glancing in the direction the voice had come from, it didn't take long to notice the approaching figure - or how the figure became more familiar as the fog obscured less and less of his form. "Mort!" There was a healthy amount of relief and joy in that one word; not a random attacker creeping up on her, then. She had thought the voice had sounded familiar, but in her moment of confusion she hadn't been able to place it.

But the company of a friend, that sounded like a good thing right about now.

"Mrrrrr." A smile split his face at the familiar voice he hadn't heard in quite some time. Mort forced himself to jog the rest of the way, for she wasn't the only one who wanted the company of a friend right now. "Hey! Leo, heeeey," he greeted as he caught up. "Long time no see."

He paused a little awkwardly, unsure whether to hug her or shake her hand. A pat on the shoulder would do.

"How s'been? Is, ah, very busy?" Mort asked with a glance at her dust materials. He had to question why she'd want to be outside where the fog was thickest, but then again fog was common in Halloween...Leo might not have been aware what happened.

"Yeah, you can say that again." She grinned when he patted her on the shoulder and went in for a quick hug. There was no way he was getting away with just a shoulder pat when they hadn't seen each other in so long. "I've been alright, thanks, how about you?" She stepped back to give him a once-over, satisfied that he seemed alright. Well, alright-ish - at least he wasn't missing his legs or anything like that, but was it just her imagination or did his body language seem a bit different? More... tense. Then again, it could easily be her projecting. In her eyes everyone seemed more jumpy these days and although she knew the bare minimums of the attack that had happened recently, she didn't know enough to say for sure whether that was the case. If she had to make a guess, she'd say it was, but you never knew in Amityville.

"Busy? Nah, I wouldn't call it that. I've been trying to study, but yeah, that hasn't exactly been the greatest success so far." She gestured at her study materials, scattered all over in her frustration at her own lack of concentration. "What about you? Up to anything exciting?"
