Fergus was waiting in the spot where he had seen Auckland many times before. He stood in the cross hairs of two well traveled paths close to the center of a meadow. Auckland was probably the sweetest soquili he had ever met, and he was thankful these roads crossed. If they hadn't, he may have never met her and would be missing out on a wonderful friendship.
Since their first encounter they had agreed to meet in the same place once a month. Today he was hoping to take her to the Moonstone Spring. It was a place he had found with Flannery long ago and enjoyed traveling there.
Fergus looked down and munched on the fresh spring grass at his feet. He wasn't hungry but it feel like something to pass the time while he waited for Auckland to make an appearance. The sky was warm in color and had only a few low hanging clouds, they lofted around lazily in the sky and brought a peacefulness to the scene.

Auckland was happy to find Fergus the first time, the male moving down the same path to the crossroads monthly to visit and enjoy his company.
It was always pleasant conversation, and she liked learning from him. The female smiled as she approached, her eyes lighting up seeing him. He was a warm, kind stallion, the sort she felt safe around, and she increased pace, beaming.
"Hello, there!"

A smile burst on his face. He couldn't hide that he was excited to see her. Auckland was remarkably kind and fun to have around. "Good evening Auckland, Its nice to see you again." and he sounded genuinely happy. "I have a place in mind that I want to show you." his body hummed with excitement. He hadn't taken anyone to the spring before and was eager to share its beauty with such a close friend.

"Really?!" Auckland perked. Fergus knew all kinds of fun places, and she was eager to see all of them, wriggling on all four hooves. "Where is it? Is it far? Can we go now?" She beamed, starting to dance. Fergus knew so many nice places-- and nice people. He was fun to be around!

Fergus chuckled at her excitement. "It is a little far, and kind of hidden, but worth finding." He didn't want to tell her everything right away. He hoped to keep it a surprise. He motioned with his head to the direction they needed to go. It was a path along the tree line, they would have to follow it for a while before entering the forest. The path was overgrown and grasshoppers leaped across it as they marched through. He had recently met his father, and it dawned on him that he knew little about Auckland's family. "I never hear you talk about your family, are they nice?" He was mostly trying to make conversation.

"They are. I have three brothers, two like me, one a Quilin. My Mother and Father took him in." She smiled. "They're wild... But full of love and kindness." She looked to Fergus. "And yours?"

He felt a little ashamed that he didnt know much about his family. he had been apart from them until recently. "Well I look allot like my father. He is kind and strong with a full heart" he paused, he hadn't met his mother or siblings yet but knew of them. "Then I have a brother and sister. I'm unsure of where my mother is, maybe one day I will meet her." His voice quieted and he had small bit of pain in his face.
"I grew up apart from my blood family. The closest ones to me are Lemon, she's a goat and helped raise me. Flannery is the human that I travel with, shes the reason I know my way around so well." a smile crossed his face again. Flannery had been there for Fergus when no one else was, she took on all the roles a family had. She was his mother, father, sibling, and best friend. She taught him all the skills he needed to survive and pushed him to new limits.
"You probably think its strange that I was raised by a human and a goat, but that's okay, I know its weird." He said and chuckled at himself.

"No weirder than hybrids raising a quilin." Auckland smiled. "Is your human nice? Does she feed you well? What are humans like?" Auckland was full of curiosity, and while wild herself, she knew of a lady that left food out for her and others. She didn't know much else about two-egged humans, aside that.

Raising a Quilin was odd but they were at least equine. Flannery was the only human he was close with. The only other time he saw other humans was when they traveled to villages and settlements, and the occasional farmer. "Is she nice? Yeah she's amazing, and feeds me really well. She is adventurous and I enjoy her company. She's also really artistic; she draws pictures and keeps a map of the places we have been." He was pretty sure Flan was unusual for a human. He extroverted personality was unlike other humans; and she seemed to like to spend more time with Fergus than her own species. "She is a bit of a loner so I don't know much about the other humans. She spends all of her time with me actually."

"Oh, she does sound nice!" Auckland perked. "I know some humans leave food out when it is hard-- I saw a tepee by the river a few times -- but I never met a human! She sounds interesting!" Auckland smiled. The soquili was admittedly curious now, but looked around as they walked, taking the area in as well. "I wonder if humans are naturally kind..."

Fegus was happy that she seemed excited about Flannery, he would have to introduce them some time.
"I think she would like you! Maybe I'll bring her along next time." he said with a smile.
They had reached a part of the path that was further overgrown; in fact it didn't look like there was a path at all. Fergus strained to remember when the last time he had gone this way to the spring was. It had clearly been a while. He felt a little embarrassed that he was leading her through far from manicured paths, but he knew she liked the less beaten path, it added to the sense of adventure.
He decided to apologize regardless "Sorry about the high vegetation, here I'll make a path."
Fergus stepped ahead and used his body and hooves to plow down the grass and weeds so it would be easier for Auckland to get through.
If the path was this thick out here, he knew the first mile into the forest would only be harder, but he remained optimistic.
"Hopefully it will be easier once we get into the forest."
They were trudging through the high grass along the tree line, and Fergus was looking for an opening. The entrance that he remembered taking would be coming up soon and he hoped that it would be more inviting than the blasted weeds.
He too wondered about other humans. He found it curious as to why Flannery spent more time with soquili than her own species.
"I don't know, I think most of them are kind, but they are probably like us, and have a mix of good and bad."

Auckland followed, mindful of the vegetation, rather appreciative of his efforts, and she smiled, slowing to nibble some leaves as they walked, enjoying the spring of a mint. She plucked another, offering it to Fergus as they walked. Speaking around it was entertaining, but fun.
"I'd like that!" She smiled. She didn't mind how far it was-- Fergus was good company and kept her safe feeling.
"I guess humans are like us..." She mused.

Her observation was intriguing, Fergus spent most his time with Flannery, perhaps it was because he feels like an outsider among other soquili. Perhaps that was the same reason why Flan stayed away from the villages. It was food for thought any way.
The tall grasses persisted for 30 or so feet and then began to transition into shorter shrubbery.
"Ah, that's better." At least the thistles were no longer tall enough to scrape his belly.
Fergus generally navigated buy following obvious landmarks and memory, but sometimes there weren't any landmarks where he needed them. Flannery would carve markings into stone or rock to direct her to a way she knew was safe and direct. He kept his head down and eyes peeled so that he might see such a mark and know where to turn.
Fergus stopped abruptly, there were a few rocks around them and a large one the size of his chest was before him. He looked at it curiously and pushed aside some vegetation to reveal what he was looking for. It was a direction mark, a triangle with one angle pointing to the direction he needed to take with a circle with a line through it behind the triangle.
"This mark, it means we should take a left here." Yes he was certain, the trees looked familiar and there was no mistaking Flans handiwork.
