The night was young and everything was in order for now. Captain Mica took to the streets of Destiny City when the longing to prowl became unbearable. Her new 'roommate' was an insufferable fool but a rich one, and while under his roof, she could take the lieutenant in small doses. However, she needed to get out, get back to the streets, the place she called home for many nights.

It had been many moons since she powered up, and in truth, she truly missed it. The night before was the first time she done it, and she missed the rush of power that came with it. She missed the shine of her Rainbow crystal, the fear in the eyes of her enemy when they were in her presence. She missed battle. As much as it had changed, she also missed the Negaverse and her people, and tonight, she was silently hoping to reunite with one.

The lieutenant she was staying with, Buddingtonite, may have been willing but showed little promise. Part of her had hoped that he was only a fluke, that the Negaverse wasn't desperate enough to simply pick up anyone who was only in it to save their own skin. But, with the recent changes, she was out of the loop, and perhaps that was the norm now? Had the Senshi threat grown so much that they truly were that desperate? Or perhaps there was a greater strategy in all of this and Mica simply didn't see it?

Tonight, she longed to find another soldier, whether it be a familiar face or a rookie. And she was absolutely certain that she wouldn't be the only Negaverse agent hitting the streets of Destiny City this evening.

I figured she'd want to test his mettle... if that's okay?

Negaverse Lieutenant Merlinite was ready to show his stuff. He had been chosen for this, he had been picked out of a bunch of people because he had shown promise: that meant everything to him. This was a new chance for him to forge his future, to prove his worth and to climb the ranks.

Hell, that was encouraged! He could definitely get behind a place like that.

Sure, he had a lot to learn, but Merlinite was not too concerned about it. He was dutiful and learning would come to him as he dove in head first. He'd pick up everything he needed to know, of that he was sure. He was nothing if not confident in his own abilities, and he knew that if he was over estimating himself he could just fake his way through it.

He was powered up and walking around, a little lost if only because he did not have much direction following his powering up for the first time. He had been corrupted, and now here he was. He needed contacts. He needed purpose. He needed... what was that weird feeling in the back of his head.

It made him want to look around. Like there was something nearby to him that he needed to locate. He'd felt it before, when the others were around him that day. Was that what it was?

He really should have signed up for some lessons.

It didn't take long to sense the first signs of a fresh lieutenant, and for that, Mica was surprisingly pleased. Had she not found anyone, she would have assumed that the Negaverse was slacking in her absence and was far gone. This gave her hope, though one couldn't tell if they were looking her dead in the eyes. She'd refuse to get her hopes too high- after all, it felt like a lieutenant, and whoever this lieutenant was, he or she was alone.

A nefarious situation for a lieutenant, though given her recent run in with her unwilling roommate, one that appeared too common place. The more things change the more they stay the same, and this was what caused Mica to migrate in the direction of the aura she felt.

She hoped that whoever it was would not have disappointed her, but she didn't even try to get her hopes up. She's rather expect nothing and be pleasantly surprised than leave with a gaping hole in her heart. Speaking of gaping holes, she half wondered just how out of practice she was, and she made a mental note to indulge in that pasttime after her visit was done.

She spotted the lieutenant before he had spotted her, but she could tell that he was sensing her. So far so good, it meant that he wasn't completely helpless. Not wanting to leave the poor rookie in suspense, Mica jumped from the rooftop she was once perched on and landed behind him, part of her wanting to get a good scare out of him, if only to teach him a lesson. "It's not safe to travel alone. Don't they teach you anything?"

He looked up when he felt the aura getting closer, if that was what it was doing. It just became more obvious, and he blinked in its direction. Then it was behind him, and he turned around to see her. He looked startled, but suppressing it. It was his instinct not to let anyone see his weaknesses.

If he let them show, they could be taken advantage of. He knew that, because that was what he did to people.

"I didn't learn anything yet, no. But hey, I figured that was just part of the game. Figure things out for myself. Aren't you one of the 'them'?" He grinned at her, then realized that she was probably one of his bosses and got a little stiffer. He would get no where, fast, by insulting his superiors.

"I'm sorry, I'm just a little confused. But my name is Merlinite, ma'am. I'm trying to do what I can to live up to this new job I've been given."

Mica tilted her head when he called her 'one of them', and she wasn't quite sure if she wanted to laugh or bring the cane into a striking position. As it was, he was within range, but she refrained. It wasn't his fault that he wasn't caught up to speed, she told herself, and if anything, it only made her more bitter.

"So, is this what the Negaverse does now? Recruit soldiers but leave them to wander aimlessly, to figure things out 'on their own'?" Mica asked, not maing it clear if it was directed for him to answer and simply rhetorical. The hint of either fear or respect from him was a good sign, at least, and she accepted it for now. She softened her tone, but only slightly. "There is nothing to apologize for, Merlinite. You simply didn't know better."

Faulty management, Mica thought, and she made a mental note to see about confronting someone about this later on. For now, she kept her attention on the new lieutenant, leaning on her cane to get a better look at him. "There is much for you to learn and live up to, the question is where to begin. Have you chosen a branch yet?"

Which reminded her that she needed to make her decision as well, but that was neither here or there. She'd decide, maybe after she's brought this one up to speed.

Merlinite imagined he might have contributed to his own confusion, by wandering off and trying to be gung ho before he knew anything, but he didn't think that was important to mention at the moment.

He smiled and nodded his head respectfully. It was always a good idea to show respect to those that were higher rank, if only because they could help him advance when he needed to. He was going to make sure he was the most loyal, active and willing soldier they had in their army.

He frowned.

"A branch? Not yet. I heard about that, I think, but I haven't picked which one is for me. I need to see what everyone is about, I think, you know? If this is going to be my life in the service here, I'm going to want to pick carefully, right?"

Despite the fact that he was a newbie roaming the streets alone, Mica was rather impressed with him thus far. It showed in how her cold eyes began to widen, ever so slightly, her brows laxed and her stern expression softened into a more open mask. No, she wasn't warm and inviting yet, but if he continued down this path, then he'd at least have earned her respect.

"Good answer. I'm Captain Mica," she said, pointing to herself with the Rainbow crystal before setting the cane back down. There was still a certain edge to her voice, but it was more professional, less apprehensive than it once was. "I'll fill you in on a small secret, Merlinite. I haven't picked a branch either. In fact, I've been on..."

She considered the best word to use, and eventually, she said, "Hiatus. I am considering Spec-Ops, given my combative skills, but I may be a little rusty."

She then looked to him, and the smile she wore was like a cat that spotted a bowl of cream. "Would you object to a spare to test each other's skills?"

He nodded his head, putting her name in his memory bank. He would have to remember a lot of names, he imagined, while getting used to his own. He was surprised he had been able to introduce himself as a stone, rather than as Dennis, as he was usually so eager to do.

People needed to know who he was. But he supposed that wouldn't change now, it was just a new identity that he needed to get out into the open.

He arched an eyebrow.

"A spar?" He wasn't above hitting a girl, but he did know when he was in over his head. Still, he needed to get used to this idea that he was actually going to be fighting people, so maybe sparring would help with that.

"Okay," he said, grinning eagerly. "Let's do it."

It did the heart well to see someone willing to learn the ropes, after so much concern over the Negaverse losing their edge. Perhaps it was premature to restore her faith in the entire organization just because one a single lieutenant's enthusiasm, but for the moment, it made her as content as a a cat lapping up a bowl of cream. She'd deal with the rest of the Negaverse in due time, for now, Merlinite had earned her complete and undivided attention.

Which may not have been that great of a thing in a few minutes. But she wouldn't deny him this chance. If he did well, she'd be sure to put in a good name for him the next time she visited the Rift or saw one of her old comrades/ Only one way to see this through.

"I will take the defense first. For your safety, I won't use the Rainbow Crystal's magic," Mica said, neither holding the weapon for him to see the crystal, or putting it away. Instead, she flipped her cane to where the crystal would be pointed away from the lieutenant, and she held it at the ready. "Come at me. See if you can hit me with your weapon or fist."

She was ready, maybe a little too ready. It had been so long since rose her weapon in a fight, and she hoped that Merlinite couldn't see the slightest tremble in her weapon nor in herself. It wasn't fear, or weakness, but anticipation.

Merlinite didn't seem to notice the crystal, almost as if she didn't have it. He wasn't going to worry himself with things like that. He wasn't scared of anything, at least not yet. And he was led to believe that they had the power on their side, and the good guys would be able to do very little against them.

Or had he told himself that?

Whatever.

He charged for her, swinging his baton at her without even really thinking about having his weapon in hand. It was just there when he needed it, and he didn't ask where it came from. He would figure that all out later, he supposed. Details on how it worked. Right now, all he needed was for it to do what he wanted.

He swung at her without holding back. Merlinite never held back.

The baton slammed against the side of her cane and caused the weapon to reverberate in Mica's hands, and the feel of her weapon and her bones rattling from the initial impact was surprising, yet welcoming, to the captain. She missed fighting, and this was a bittersweet reminder of why she had joined the Negaverse to begin with. Seeing the new lieutenant throw all of himself into a strike did much to renew her hope, and it was clear to see in the way her eyes sparkled with life.

"Good." Mica said, though her eyes were alive and the smile on her face genuine and rare, her voice remained steady, only needing something more to be convinced. She held her cane up again, this time closer towards her head. "Now, again, and this time, try to hit my shoulder."

Not that she'd give him a chance to do so. She was more than ready to defend the designated target, but if he managed to break past her defense and strike it, she'd be impressed. One or two more rounds on the offense for him before she'd decide to switch it around, though, she had no intention of telling him that. This was war, after all. One couldn't expect their enemy to play fair.

Merlinite didn't need to be told twice! He was not shy about hitting girls, but then, he knew he wasn't really hitting her. She was stronger and more trained than he was, so she knew how to handle herself in a fight. Taking pity on her would just get him in trouble, and he wasn't going to do that.

He was the same way at work: he did not risk underestimating his coworkers or rivals, lest he put himself at a disadvantage for it.

Nodding, he charged and tried to swing for her shoulder, but saw that she was waiting for him. No free hits here, it seemed. He would have to alter his path, and he made to strike with his baton but stopped himself at the last moment to swing his fist for her other shoulder instead.Maybe a little one two would help him out here. Simple, maybe, but he was going with what he knew.

His form may not have been perfect, but his heart was in it. Mica admired that in silence, seeing his attempt to go for a one-two hit and trying her best to counter it as best as possible without losing her footing. She was anticipating the baton but not so much the fist, and she tried to duck out of it instead of catch the blow. While her heel nearly gave out, she did manage to swerve out of the blow, but just barely. Perhaps there was more potential in this one after all.

"Good, very good," she said, her words encouraging though her voice just as cold as ever. No, she didn't want to raise his hopes too high, and she certainly didn't want to think that she was coddling him. She'd look out for her kind, but she would never baby them.

Without warning, she jumped onto the offensive, keeping the bladed end of her weapon pointed away from him and moving the staff towards his legs to try and trip him up. It was a rather cheap tactic, but it was for his own good. She was fully expecting him to stumble on her staff and take the fall, not once considering if he was nimble or well coordinated to avoid the attack.

You are more than welcomed to dodge and strike her. She's out of practice at this point.

Merlinite had a little training under his belt, but it was only personal and as a civilian. He was trying to become a police officer, without having to suffer the indignity of being in the low ranks for long. He wanted to be immediately awesome, which was why he also had his desk job at the station, just to become known at the station and help his progress along.

Always thinking of the climb ahead, never satisfied with his lot in life. That was what comprised Merlinite's thinking, most days. It kept him going, striving to that point where he could live comfortably and happily, back behind a desk but as the boss of everyone.

Yeah, that would work just fine.

He was surprised when she made to swing at him, not thinking he'd be able to do anything about it but actually able to use his new reaction times to pull himself backwards and pull up one of his feet to avoid it getting hit out from under him. Of course, that only half worked because her staff hit his other foot. He stumbled, but was able to catch his bearings and turn his fall into a lunging shoulder check. Not graceful, but it worked for him.

Part of her was disappointed that he hadn't gone tumbling to the pavement, as it meant that she hadn't tried hard enough to make that happen. But another part of her was impressed by his reflexes, and she tried to allow that part to be seen instead. She withdrew her staff and held it at her side, allowing him the chance to take a breather while she evaluated him in silence.

He had good reflexes and he seemed energetic, and it was that kind of mentality that Mica was looking for in the Negaverse. Perhaps this new change wasn't so bad? Still, it hardly seemed fair to judge the whole organization based on a single lieutenant's tenacity. After all, he may have been the best they had to offer, and he still had some ways to go.

"You did well," she said flatly. When she felt that he had enough time to catch his breath, she brought her weapon to the front again, and none could deny the twinkle in her eye as she addressed him. "Now, may I test your defense?"
