Ever since she had run into the man who identified himself as Alfheim of Earth, Sophie's research had hit a bit of a standstill. She hadn't gone out late at night trying to run into so-called terrorists. She hadn't spent hours at the library poring over old newspapers. She had kept her list of buzzwords handy, but beyond that, wasn't sure what else to do. These weren't ordinary people she was dealing with. They had magic, that let them vanish and reappear, or even more amazing, let them look like somebody else entirely.

What if she ran into someone she knew, and didn't recognize them? What if they recognized her and decided she was a threat?

It was clearly a time for reassessment. It was also, Sophie decided, time for cake. Or pie or custard or something equally sweet and creamy and delicious. After giving the matter some thought, she decided to call one of the people she knew who enjoyed chocolate and sweets as much as she did: her cousin Marcella. It had been a while since the two had gotten together, despite their overlapping interests, and Sophie decided that they were long overdue for some family bonding.

The place they chose was called Morsels. Its name, she'd heard, was well deserved- the desserts were small, but packed a punch in terms of quality and taste. Sophie had never been there before, but Marcella seemed to know it, and that was enough of a recommendation for her. It was a bit cold as of yet for the sidewalk cafe, so she chose a seat inside, making sure to snag a table in case they filled up. It was hard to stay put; the case of desserts at the front of the store was acting like a magnet, trying to pull Sophie right into it, and she fidgeted from the effort it took to remain seated.

Marcella arrived in her Sovereign Heights uniform with a large purse in one hand and a messenger bag slung over the other shoulder. Slightly damp curls were held tame at the back of her head by a large alligator clip, and her make-up looked fresh.

The joys of senshi life - she had been busy the night before, had gotten involved in a stake-out of sorts, and returned home much later than she had hoped. On top of oversleeping a good 45 minutes, Marcella had nearly forgotten about an exam in one of her classes later that afternoon. The duties of the Senshi of Medicine provided no excuses from assignments, and so, following a half-hour cram session during breakfast, Marcella decided to skip a trip home for her books and instead brought them with her in order to proceed directly to campus following her meeting with her cousin.

"Sorry, I hope I didn't keep you waiting too long," she offered as a sort of greeting, observing that Sophie's claimed table was devoid of sweets or even a cup of coffee. Marcella dropped her messenger bag in one chair to relieve herself of the weight of her anatomy texts, and to serve as a claim on the table so they could order.

She twirled her wrist to rotate her watch around so she could check the time. "Late night cram session got me a late start this morning," the hazel-eyed girl confessed, then gestured to the counter. "I wouldn't have been upset if you'd gotten a drink or something without me."

It took every ounce of willpower Sophie had to remain seated when Marcella came, instead of racing to the display case and ordering half of its contents. "I've only been here for a few moments," she answered instead, forcibly switching her gaze so she was looking at her cousin and not at the desserts. That was the truth, but each of those moments had felt like a small eternity when confronted with all of the tasty goodies.

Focus, Sophie. Priorities first.

"Don't even get me started on cram sessions. Part of me thinks they should be illegal, but then nobody would pass these classes." School was touchy subject with Sophie. It wasn't that she didn't believe that college was important, but none of the classes seemed to teach you how to decide what direction to steer your life in. And without a course labelled "World-Saving 101," she was at a bit of a loss. College felt like something she was doing to pass the time, and to please her mother, rather than really achieving anything she cared about.

But how could she explain that to someone who so clearly knew what they wanted?

"I figured we could split something," she said instead, waving a hand at the case. "Maybe several somethings, if we're feeling really fantastically terrible." It wasn't that Sophie was particularly hungry; even with small portions, she didn't mind sharing. Not if it meant a chance at trying even more delicious choices!

"Some things, though, you really can't get away with studying any other way besides just sitting down and memorizing," Marcella replied with a sigh and a hard look at her book bag. "And really, when it comes down to it, I think I'm glad med school is basically a giant weed-out class. I mean, would you want your surgeons and dentists to be people who were just there for the easy A?"

Well, someone she knew at the hospital had admitted that she was only in medicine for the money, but since Marcella was experiencing first-hand all the work it took to get there, there was still something to be said for the level of perserverance required.

The hazel-eyed girl badly wanted to succeed at it, herself, but for the duration of this meeting, at least, she could give her brain a bit of a rest. There had to be some study out there somewhere linking chocolate to improved memory.

"I have time to help you destroy maybe four little cakes total, assuming we'll be chatting as we do so," she added, glancing at her watch again before her gaze strayed to the treats in the glass case. "It's been a while since I last came here, and I've been working out anyway."

'Having fist-fights with youma' was not something she expected to find in her smartphone's workout app's list of activities, but just because the developer did not know how many calories it burned per hour did not mean that it was not exercise. Maybe it was not the healthiest thing to be doing a 1 in the morning, but it still counted for something.

"So, I'm definitely getting the hazelnut mocha pyramid...." Marcella began, putting one hand to her chin to think as she stepped closer to the glass case to scrutinize the selection.

"I guess so," Sophie agreed tentatively. That was one reason she had opted not to pursue a path in medicine herself. While it was inarguable that doctors saved lives, and she was no stranger to hard work, something about the rigorous structure and hierarchy in the hospital that she had volunteered at had made her uncomfortable. Whatever she ended up doing, she wanted it to be something more organic and less taught. Whatever that meant.

Marcella seemed perfect for that path, though, and Sophie envied her dedication to it. There had to be something out there that she felt just as passionate about, something concrete and meaningful. But until she found it, she was going to be one of those students looking for the easy A.

"So, four cakes." When the topic was chocolate, it was easy to put other things aside. "I know I want the chocolate raspberry ganache, but I'm torn between a few for the other one. The salted caramel, maybe, or the tiramisu. I'll have to pass on the hazelnut, but it sounds delicious." Sometimes, being allergic to nuts was a real pain. She rarely missed eating them except when they were combined with sugar, milk, or chocolate.

One could say that Sophie had been working out as well, if one considered her extended nighttime strolls a workout. Walking technically counted, she supposed. But if she was going to indulge, maybe she needed another outlet. Rowing machines at the gym didn't hold a candle to the real thing, and she couldn't exactly take a boat out by herself. "Where are you working out? I could use a little more exercise myself, probably."

An image of herself, jogging in place while she chatted to alleged terrorists, appeared in Sophie's mind, making her smile. That was one option, but it wasn't a very good one.

The question caught Marcella a bit by surprise. Or rather, it made perfect sense for Sophie to ask, but it was not something she was prepared to answer. Sophie was family, but it was still dangerous to go sharing her secret identity with people. Marcella staunchly refused to entertain the possibilty that her cousin could be one of the Negaverse agents, herself, but divulging her senshi-ness could also conceivably put Sophie at risk.

Unfortunately, Marcella was also not a good liar by nature.

Hopefully she could pass off the time spent mentally stumbling for a proper response as being distracted by cake; she was still staring into the display case.

"Oh, uh, I've just been trying to walk to and from work more," she finally replied, straightening and turning away from the case to smile weakly at the other girl. That was the truth, at least, if one ignored that she was neglecting to mention that at least half of said walks took place on the roofs of buildings.

"Oh, right, sorry, I hate that you can't eat nuts," Marcella added, brows drawing down into a small frown of sympathy. "More hazelnut for me, but. I'll pay for your drink if you want, in exchange? And if you get the salted caramel, I'll get the tiramisu, then?"
