Finally! Passing the exam and getting her starter pokemon as a dream come true for Lily. After a year of rigorous (read as: slacker) studying, pulling all nighters (read as: parties), and attending battles (read as: scoping out cute boys), she had succeeded in making the grade. Being held back a year was embarrassing, but it was a thing of the past. No need to dwell on it longer.

If only she knew. Lily shifted on the hard bench in Professor Elm’s lab and waited for her partner to show up. Graduation requirements had changed. It was no longer a solo adventure. Now you needed some ‘partner’ designated by the academy to travel with you. What a load of crap! Huffing, she folded her arms across her chest.

Not only that, but they wanted their starter pokemon (if not ALL pokemon) to travel outside of the balls. All the assistants were looking at the girl funny for not releasing Gasp. Could they blame her!? A cute girl like her having to use a ghastly of all pokemon! Now only was it icky, but scary too, and Lily was none too happy with the choice. Why didn’t they give her something fun and adorable, like a Parichissu or a Pikachu!? Even an oddish would eventually become beautiful and adorable. But a GHASTLY?

“I’m sure he’s just running behind. He’ll be here soon,” An assistant offered helpfully, mistaking Lily’s discomfort with her starter for impatience. Wait, her partner was a boy!? Maybe he was a really cute boy and they would be best friends. Or date! Oooh they could be a cute couple fighting side by side, overcoming obstacles. First thing, though, good impression. Lily sat up straight and practically beamed with happiness. Gotta make sure that partner thought she was nice!

Sweat clung to the back of his neck, slowly slithering down and slicking his back, creating an adhesive that caused the fabric of his dirty white wife beater to stick to his hot skin. With fingers fairly calloused for someone of his age, Marcus tugged the last knot tightly into the laces of his work boots. That morning was spent foraging around the grassy territory just west of New Bark Town, searching for anything that might help him get a headstart. With a handful of berries collected and shoved into his drawstring bag carelessly, he felt somewhat better about the upcoming journey he had to face. Sure, the school's program provided a starter's pack, containing a few Potions, 5 standard Pokeballs, a map of the Johto region, and a personalized Pokegear, but the boy was no fool. Those things would only last so long, and a trainer had to be self-sufficient to make it.

Hopefully, his partner had the same mindset.

A few months ahead of time before his flight over to the new region, Marcus had received a letter in the mail gleefully proclaiming his success in passing the school's sit-down-and-learn-from-books portion of their training program. The program in mention, Poke` National Academy, had school facilities built all over the world. The one closest to Marcus's hometown of Lentimas was built in Nimbasa City, which required him to occupy a dorm located nearby. That took him about a year with only a two month break to be home, not including the few months he spent at home after the final exam. Now after what felt like a blink of an eye, he was away from the rust colored dusty town he was born and raised in. Yeah, he missed it, but Marcus wasn't one for sentiments.

Besides, this was a once in a lifetime opportunity. No one necessarily had to attend the Academy to become a travelling Pokemon Trainer, but it had it's benefits. The first and foremost one was that the Academy set up their students with starter Pokemon they felt would best suit them. And of course, they had been dead on. Trailing alongside the fifteen year old boy, waddling confidently, was a Gible he affectionately named Reptar (reptile, get it?!). Sure, she was just a squat lil' thing now, but Marcus very well knew her potential. A Garchomp was in his near-future, and those suckers were dangerous beasts if raised properly. He was definitely going to make sure of that.

As the pair neared the Professor's lab, a cocky grin spread across his face, making him walk with deliberate swagger. Confidence shone with each step, but it was more for first impression than anything else. All Marcus knew ahead of time was that his partner was to be a girl-- which was fine, but if she didn't bat an eyelash to the way he held himself, he was sure that she'd be strong enough to keep up with him. Hell, the boy wasn't too fond of having someone to drag along, but if this chick turned out to be wily and resourceful, this partnership could turn out interesting. "Ready, girl?" he asked, his voice slurring with an accent not commonly heard around most parts of Johto, or even Unova. It was one he'd picked up from his father, though it wasn't as thickly laid on.

With a small snort of agreement, Reptar flashed her partner a set of sharp, white teeth as she fought to keep her stubby legs carrying her at the same pace as him. Assured by her confidence, Marcus shoved the palm of his hand hard against the double glass doors, forcing them open with blunt force and allowing he and his Pokemon a loud entry. At first he nearly passed by the benches near the entrance, heading for the back of the lab, but a quick, polite noise from one of the assistants caught the boy's attention and turned it towards the blue-haired girl with the wave of a hand.

Dear God no...

Dear God no…

For a moment Lily was stunned into silence. Abruptly the bubble of potential boyfriends and cute couple escapades popped. This was her partner? This kid in a dirty wife-beater with a Gible by his side would be the partner that the school decided best for her? Fate had really dealt a crap hand.

No! There was only one option. This boy was heroic. Yes, that had to be it, her knight in dirty wife-beater. Having woken up early, he trekked through the tall grass, clearing a path for her with his noble Gible. Then, on a high ledge there was a boy! Yes! Just a little baby, probably escaped from a daycare of some sort. Poor little guy was about to fall and he, her amazing partner of hero and justice, jumped for the kid. No wonder he was dirty and smelly.

Standing up quickly, Lily extended her hand and a bright smile, “Hello~! My name is Lily Hawthorne. You’re my partner, right? I’m super glad to meet you!”

Stunned silence was all Marcus could bring himself to greet the beaming young girl with as he stared unblinking at her outstretched hand. It was as if he'd never heard of the concept of shaking hands before. Every single gear in his brain was slowly churning. How the hell had he landed such a partner? Was there error in the testing? Could this be some sick joke, provoked by his older brother?

No, that a**-face wasn't involved in any of this, no matter how much he'd love to slap the blame on him. The Fates were just having a good chuckle at his expense. Somehow a flinch from this Lily would have been preferable to her bubbly introduction. It just grated on him the wrong way. He really hated those optimistic types.

"Yea," he finally managed to say, lifting his blue-gray gaze up at the unbearably cheerful face before him. Crossing his arms sternly across his chest, Marcus fixed her with a look that could have killed, clearly unimpressed. "Unfortunately. Name's Marcus. Where th'heck is yer Pokemon?"

Now that the initial shock was over, it was apparent what else was wrong with Lily. While Reptar stood proudly by his side, her expression currently unreadable, there was no little critter to be seen around this girl. Did she not know the rules? "Y'know yew gotta keep 'em out, right?" Marcus arched an eyebrow, waiting for her answer.
