Winter's snows were finally wearing off. Every year, the world went into a cold sleep, like a hibernating bear ready to survive the winter's harshest blows. And, every year, winter retreated. Green sprouts poked up through the snow and, here and there, bright flowers broke up the monotony. And then Tiberius happened. He burst from the bushes like a squirrel on crack, barreling through the forest as quickly as he could. Not for any particular reason.

Then again, he considered because I can to be a perfectly adequate explanation for everything forever. The world was just so vast! Why should he ever slow down? There was so much awesome to see and, finally, the world had a fawn worthy of it.

No doubt, the world was grateful for the existence of Tiberius. Chest heaving, the fawn slowed down for a moment to dig in the snow. Every moment to dig was like a new experience! It was like treasure hunting! Because there was just no knowing what was hidden under the snow.

One time? He found a shiny stone!

Most of Tiberius' thoughts ended in exclamations. He thought in yells of excitement.

Not so far from where the peace was suddenly disturbed, a silent figure quietly moved through the snow. He'd been doing a routine patrol of the area, trusting that Don had everything under control with their herd of... well. Strays and those that just happened to like Don. Or that was how one, Nightlark, saw it. But he didn't mind. He was there to protect. And that was what he did.

Except today, he was annoyed. Because there was some fawn disturbing the peace! Nightlark huffed, warm air blowing out of his flared nostrils. He watched the young male, moving steadily closer while keeping watch on their surroundings. Was he alone? Or was their another nearby, ready to come at a moments notice should the fawn cry out?

Did he really care?

Standing still for a moment, Nightlark observed the younger male dig in the snow. An ear perked forward as he seemed to suddenly grow even more excited. What had he found?

With a sigh, Nightlark snorted again, but loud enough for Tiberius to hear, as he moved forward. "What are you doing?" He asked in a bored tone.

Tiberius was not one to shirk and shy away at sudden voices. So, when one broke through the silent forest, the little gray fawn stood his ground and looked up at the much larger buck brazenly. “I'm looking for treasure,” he explained proudly, holding his head up high.

“And when I find it, I'm gonna bury it again so only I can find it,” he continued, because that always made sense in the mind of a child. He returned to digging and abruptly stopped. Suddenly, he was rather suspicious of Nightlark just happening to find the little treasure-hunter. What if he was a spy? A dastardly spy, because dastards were totally a thing that existed. With one last suspicious glance towards Nightlark, Tiberius conspicuously rearranged himself so the other buck couldn't see what he was doing.

It was top secret despite the fact that he had just told Nightlark what he was doing.

“I'm Tiberius. Who are you and what are you doing?” he asked, because no one ever thought to teach fawns not to talk to strangers.

Nightlark just gave the fawn a blank look, ears lowering a notch. Looking... for treasure? The buck highly doubted there was treasure here. Perhaps it was just a child's boredom. Something he did not need. Though he could tell almost at once that this fawn had some spirit to him.

Though maybe not much in the 'brains' category.

"You're going to bury it again." He did not understand the point of this. And was fairly sure the fawn would forget where this 'treasure' was buried. "What would be the point of that?" He didn't really care. But it just made no sense to him. And now what was he doing? Nightlark sighed, pawing gingerly at the snow.

An ear flick and mildly bored expression was the first response Tiberius got to his questions. "I am patrolling the area." He said with a slight raise of his head, proud of his duty to Don. "And you may call me Nightlark." He paused, looking about the area suspiciously again. "Are you alone out here?" He asked with a hint of curiosity.
