A few years ago, I was team captain of team breast and was 15. Now, at 17, after a long hiatus...I'm back! However this time I'm leading for colon. The reason why I'm leading for this, because I love supporting this amazing cause and spreading awareness of the illness. Also a personal reason, why I chose to lead this team.

Colon cancer is also known as colorectal cancer, which can occur in the colon or rectum. Usually, a tumor, called a polyp occurs in the inner lining of the colon or the rectum. Most incidences of colon cancer occur due to cell growing abnormally or from old age. People that are over the age of 50, are usually diagnosed with colorectal cancer.
Symptoms: - change in bowel habits -abnormal discomfort -changes in digestion -fatigue -weight loss -anemia (reduction of red blood cells) -bowel blockage
Treatment/Prevention: There have been many advancement for colon cancer treatments and prevention. One of them is surgically removing a polyp. As stated from before, a polyp is a tumor found on the inner lining of the colon or rectum. To check for a polyp, one must get a colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy.
- A colonoscopy is an examination of the colon, with a colonscope and requres sedation, while a sigmoidoscopy is an examination of the sigmoid colon. No sedation required for a sigmoidoscopy.
Chemotherapy and radiation therapy is also used to stop the growth of cancer cells. For more treatments for colon cancer, check out this video.
