I am coughing up blood-tinted phlem, wearing a nightgown and ten pounds of polarfleece, namely the sixth doctor coat and cat hat, watching Star Trek, popping Vitamin Cs like candy and my desk is strewn with comic thumbnails and character designs as I try to remember what normal people actually look like. I have never felt more like a cartoonist in my life.

You should really bounce to the ER, hacking up blood is super serious. And bulk up on vitamin D3, it's probably one of the best vitamins to abuse when you're sick. : D
If you need help making characters with confusing genders I might be able to lend a hand. Like.... check out It Vorspiel! I am convinced Itto is the King-Queen of androgynous manga leads.

It's just a little brown and red mixed in with the phlem, and it's mostly stopped. And I'll take all the help that I can get with these two, I've got a sketch of what they looked like as children but young adults are another matter entirely.

That's good, you're too young to die of the common cold, Kitty!
Androgyny 101 according to the manga-verse: Give men fabulous long hair, and women a stylish typically male hairstyle. Faces should be gender-neutral. Pretty, but with a fair deal of masculinity. Body type should be lean, with a confusing hourglass figure and flat chest. Clothing should be gender neutral with layers, to further confuse what gender the person should be. Think coats, vests, tight pants, button-up shirts, private school uniforms, boots, chucks..... And give them neutral names, like Robin or Alex. People will be get into heated debates trying to settle on a gender.
If you want I can even whip up a few rough drafts for ideas. If there's one thing my hipstering around has accomplished, it's being a living dictionary of tropes cliches.
