Setting:: Nighttime; a thunderstorm is raging

Ace should've been sleeping. With two new kits to take care of, he could use all of the sleep he could get. Ca'an was fine when he was asleep, but when he was awake... both he and Estralita could be a handful. Well, he did wish for children--he was just a little surprised he actually got them. He sat at the entrance of the little hole in the mountain that was their home, watching the storm. A quiet voice shook him from his thoughts. "Daddy?" Ca'an sleepily crawled towards his father. "I thought we weren't 'upposed to go out durin' storms..." Ace turned and smiled at his son. "I'm not going out," he reassured the kit. "Then why're you o'er here?" Ace looked out towards the storm again. "Why...? I guess it's just a habit I picked up." He nudged his son gently. "It's late. You should get back to sleep."

 The little ball of purple and white fur that made up the one sibling called Estralita had been sleeping until the voices drifted over to her ears. Her little eyes popped open and she looked around for her father and brother. She figured that it was the end of the conversation for her brother but it wasn't the end for her. "Daddy tell us why we can't again." She wasn't really asking her father but demanding it maybe. She wasn't sleepy anymore and was truthfully wide awake, she wanted to hear stories, she wanted to go on an adventure and she just didn't want to sleep anymore.

"Because it's dangerous," Ace replied automatically. "The rain makes the river fast and violent. The lightning can catch trees on fire. And it's really hard to see--it's very easy to lose your way even in familiar places." Ca'an thought for a few minutes before speaking up again. "Where'd the habit come from?" When his father gave him a puzzled look, he explained further. "The habit of standing here when it's stormin'." Ace blinked, then smiled. "Ah, that..." He looked towards the storm again. "I'm used to waiting for someone."

Normally she would have been more considerate and caring about the word danger and the scene her father was trying to paint for her to imagine, however; there was something else he said because of her brother's next question that sent her into a new world. "Waiting for someone? Waiting for who?"She couldn't help the questions that slipped from her tongue. Had her father met someone that they didn't know about? Could it finally be that they were going to meet their mother figure? "Wait daddy, could it be mommy? Is it someone new, old? Will you tell us about her?" She knew she should stop with the questions but deep down she also wanted to know the answers. Later on, she would apologize and be sympathetic but in the moment she only cared about answers.

Ace shook his head. "No, it's not Mommy. It's someone I knew when I was a kit. He was the closest thing I had to a brother." Ca'an stared at him with a puzzled look. "What do you mean?" Ace hesitated. He'd wanted to avoid these stories, but... "I didn't know my parents. A pair of brothers found me when I was little and raised me. Their names were Kazare and Nataku. But I wasn't the only kit they took in--there were many. We were like a little family. The one I was closest to was a kit named Lightning Pawn." Ca'an's eyes went wide as his father spoke, hanging off of every word. This wasn't just any story. This was a story with Daddy in it. He didn't ever tell stories like this before. "What was he like?"Ace smiled. "Well, he changed over the years. At first he was really small. He was probably half your size," he replied while tickling his son. "At first he was really quiet and timid. He seemed afraid of everyone, as if he thought they were going to hurt him." His face lit up as he looked out towards the storm. "The first time I saw him really smile was when a storm rolled in. His face lit right up. He'd dart right out into it, when everyone else was curled up in the corners. I didn't--and still don't--like getting wet, so I wouldn't go out there. Nataku and Kazare didn't want us too either since it's dangerous. But as soon as the thunder sounded... no one could keep him inside. I was worried about him, so I started sitting at the entrance, waiting for him to come back." Still smiling, he shook his head. "He's the only Gladier I've ever met that can, without fail, find his way during a storm."

Lita was only a little disappointed that it was not their mother that he was waiting on but instead someone he was indeed close to after all. However, it only made her wonder more just where their mother was and if she even cared about them anymore, it at all. She kept her mouth shut until the story was finished because she enjoyed hearing her daddy's stories, ones with him in it were rare. Once it was finished and she heard the detail of his unique friend, she got a smart yet stupid idea. "Daddy I'm going to be just like him, one day I will find my way while it storms." She said the words as she began to yawn, she meant the words she spoke but she found herself very sleepy again. "Not today but someday." She curled back up into a ball and found herself relaxing with ease.

Although she didn't see it, Ace grimaced at Estralita's words. Fear gripped his heart. No, she couldn't be like Lightning. She had no idea what that meant. "Daddy?" His son's voice shook him from his terror. "Yes, Ca'an?" The kit fidgeted before quietly asking. "Did something bad happen to him?" Ace smiled and gave him a lick. "Don't worry, he's still around. But that story's best for another time. Get some sleep." As Ca'an tottered over and curled up by his sister, Ace turned to face the entrance again. "What am I gonna do, Taku?" he whispered to the raging storm, his words all but drowned out by the howling wind. "How do I tell them how the story ends...?"

Lita snuggled into her brother as she slept, the warmth around her made her sleep more peacefully. After a little while, her little eyes popped back open because the storm got louder. Thunder and lightning boomed and cracked in the sky outside the opening of their little den. "Daddy! I changed my mind! This is scary!" She called out for her daddy hoping he was near by and awake to hear her plea. Her little head rose above her brother and she looked around for him. She had no idea that storms could be so loud and scary.

Ca'an stirred and groggily looked around. "Whazza ma'er, Lita...?" A gentle nuzzle and extra warmth from their father joining them lulled him back to sleep. "It's alright, Lita," he reassured her softly. "Storms don't come inside. You're safe." Relief. Immense relief was the feeling that washed over him as he comforted his child. She didn't want to be Lightning. But he'd still have to finish his little story. Maybe in the morning he'd take them to see... maybe that was the best place to explain.

Her gentle but frightened eyes looked at her father as she snuggled in closer to her brother. "How do you know that? It sounds so loud and close." She tried to whisper the words so she wouldn't wake her brother again but she was still scared of what was outside.

Ace chuckled. "I watched a lot of storms for Lightning Pawn from the entrances of a cave just like this one. Sometimes the wind would blow a little bit of rain in, but that's all. Storms have to stay where the sky is--and that's outside." He gave Estralita a lick on the head. "You're perfectly safe here. I promise."

She enjoyed the sound of his gentle voice and the affection coming from the lick on her head. "I believe you but it is still scary." She whispered the words while her eyes focused on the entrance and the sky outside. "Can you tell me a nice story?" Lita wanted to get her mind off the scenery in front of her and be somewhere more peaceful.

Ace thought for a little while before smiling. "I've got one." He smiled as he looked down at his daughter. "Once upon a time, there was a notorious prankster. He was always getting into trouble, and sometimes dragged his best friend into it too. Now, he wasn't all pranks and laughs; sometimes he tried to do nice things. But because he was a prankster, everyone thought he was pulling one on them when he tried to do nice things. He became very lonely. One night, after a prank went wrong, he sat down and looked up at the sky. He thought he saw one of the stars twinkling at him, so he talked to it. He told it of his problems and of his deepest desire: to be part of a family. But he wasn't very good with other Gladiers, so it would be hard to have his wish granted. But he would give up anything--even his pranks--to have it fulfilled. The star didn't respond; it only twinkled at him again.""The next night, he had a dream that there was someone curled up beside him--someone bright and warm. When he woke up, there was no one there. A few weeks passed and nothing had changed besides his attempts to live by his new rule and cut down on his mischievous ways. One night, he had the dream again: someone curled up beside him. But this time, he dreamt of that person leaving. At first, he could only see a bright light, but as his eyes adjusted, he saw it was Gladier-shaped. It smiled at him, and then disappeared. But when he woke up..." Ace smiled. "When he woke up, he found two cute kits with star patterns on their fur curled up beside him. And from then on, he was the happiest Gladier in all the land."

Estralita wasn't sure what to think of the story she just heard from her father but her heart warmed as he told her the story. She couldn't help but feel like she was very special to him, more special than any normal child could be to their father. Her eyes traveled from her father and landed on her brother, she knew deep down that her brother was just as special as she was and she was fine with that. "Daddy, why did you feel like you had to prank others?" She didn't really understand why she asked that question when she could have easily asked so many others. She could have asked if she really belonged here with him or if she belonged else where because of how weirdly the story brought them here to him or any numerous other things but she was most curious about him. "I am happy you changed for the better." The gentle words came from her and she smiled up at him but in truth, her mind continued to wonder about their future.
