Genin (下忍; "Low ninja" )
xx- Receive a ninja headband
xx- Lowest ranked ninja
xx- Assigned to four man squads consisting of three Genin and a Jōnin-sensei, in order to learn teamwork and experience true ninja life under the supervision and protection of an elite shinobi.
xx- Make-up of teams are based on individual skill
xx- Assigned D-Rank and C-Rank missions
Chūnin (中忍; "Middle Ninja" )
xx- Receive a flak jacket
xx- Rank higher than Genin
xx- Achieved by completing the Chūnin exams, are recognized by Kage after the exams
xx- Some serve as Academy teachers, others team leaders of small teams
xx- Assigned C-Rank and B-Rank missions
Tokubetsu Jōnin (特別上忍; "Special High Ninja" )
xx- Appointed by Kage
xx- Unlike Jōnin, they specialize in one area or skill, i.e. ninjutsu, taijutsu, genjutsu, medical ninjutsu, sensory, intelligence, etc.
xx- Assigned as subordinates under Jōnin when necessary
xx- Assigned B-Rank and A-Rank missions
Jōnin (上忍, Jōnin; "High Ninja" )
xx- Appointed by Kage
xx- Skilled in ninjutsu, taijutsu, and some genjutsu (depending on main speciality)
xx- Can usually use two types of chakra natures
xx- Assigned B-Rank and A-Rank missions. Higher skilled jōnin are assigned S-Rank missions as well.
xx- Some are assigned to four man cells as sensei to three genin
Jōnin Commander (上忍班長, Jōnin Hanchō)
xx- Limited to one, appointed by Kage
xx- Highest ranking normal shinobi
xx- Still officially a Jōnin
xx- Representative of regular shinobi forces
xx- Member of the village council
xx- Has a say in the naming of a new Kage
Kage (影; "Shadow" )
xx- Leader of one of the Five Great Shinobi Nations
xx- Acknowledged as most powerful ninja in their village
xx- Assign ranks above Genin
xx- Assigns missions
xx- Previous Kage may resume role as Kage if the successor dies
xx- Kage's are usually heirs or relatives of previous Kage
xx- Participate in meetings called the "Kage Summit"
