Though it was only early spring, the mountains held little shade, and the sun beat down mercilessly in the middle of the day. Most days, there were gentle breezes to cool the air, but this day was an exception, and it brought misery upon the eldest of Rhaegar Targaryen's brood. The young Solara preferred to be away from his family, wandering outside and looking for wildflowers. Unfortunately, this hot day kept him within the herd's cool cavern, hooves clattering against the stone as he lurked about the edges of the keep, trying to keep out of the sight of his nosy father and his nosier siblings. That aside, the deeper one walked into the caves, the more intricate and fantastic the paths became, showing off secret areas that only the most worthy and curious were blessed to see.

Yet Ophion's peace was not to last. It was time again for the three boys to attend their daily lessons in self-defense, and not one of them was anywhere to be found. With his Lady Melusine searching in the direction opposite his own, Rhaegar kept his pale eyes peeled, tail swaying languidly behind him. All three of his sons hand wondering minds and wandering hooves; a taste for learning was something he could accept, but their incessant need to wander further and further from the herd was more than he could bear. It was as though they had no interest in their own family and, worse yet, no interest in their own herd. Did they not realize that this was where their lives would be lived, that this was where they were needed? The stallion scoffed under his breath, glancing down a covered hallway. No one had ever told him that children could be so willful.

Melusine bore all of Rhaegar's impatience and more. She had thought that her brood would be endowed with a sense of responsibility mirroring hers - at least, she'd hoped for at least one to show such promise. Alas, she'd been far wrong, and now she was once again stuck combing the wilderness for her wayward boys. To say she was aggravated was a gross understatement. Her tail swatted furiously behind her as sharp golden eyes prowled the lowlit depths of the cavern for three unlucky Solara. A sound drew her gaze upward, and she shouted furiously. "Simionce! Young man get down here this instant!"

An impudent grin bloomed on Simionce's jade face as he heard the shout. Self-defense was always a boring lesson, and his parents were so horribly solemn about the whole thing. He doubted that any enemies could ever find their way into their lair, and as far as he knew, none had; so what was all the fuss about? Mother was already storming up towards his perch near the waterfall, but he had a back-up plan. Blowing a raspberry, he turned and ran, cackling with evil childish glee at the resulting angry shouts. His hooves carried him swiftly down the slender path along the cave wall he'd located, and he slid into a concealed cave entrance before Mother spotted him. It was hard to breathe lightly, but Simionce forced himself to be silent, restraining his caterwhauling delight as he successfully hid. After only a few moments, Melusine retreated, making her way back towards the ground with an angry snarl. The hellspawn cackled again, then turned and made his eager way into the cave. He'd explored it plenty of times by now, so there was nothing to worry about. Besides, this was infinitely better compared to lectures and drills. Bleh.

Unlike his two brothers, Pythios was more than happy to partake in such exciting lessons on self-defense and etiquette. As long as it was something his father was participating in, Pythios found delight in it. Neither of his brothers held much esteem for him, he could tell [although he couldn't exactly understand why], and his mother was... his mother, yes, but also a very strict one. Not to say that they father was not also strict, but he had such a formal and commanding air to him- one that Pythios absolutely adored. Even so, it was too fun of a game to pass up tailing his brother Ophion, as he was oft to do, so he disregarded the calls of his parents and continued sneaking after his brother through the caves, trying his hardest to stay as quiet as possible to avoid his brother's potential wrath.

Unsurprisingly, Ophion was rarely fooled by his brother's attempts to sneak around behind him. Sharp golden eyes would catch the edge of a shadow that wasn't his, or his ears would flick backward to hear the soft scuff of another set of hooves on the rocky ground. Moodily, the young solara tossed his short mane, increasing his pace before scurrying around a corner, his own hooves slipping on the stone and causing him to tumble into the gap he'd intended to hide in. The lanky white body was all tangled up in itself when the eldest of the three males fell from the other side, crashing spectacularly into the family's black sheep of a middle child.

In a moment, Ophion was back on his feet, bright yellow eyes wide as they flicked from the cave hall he'd entered from to Simionce. Glaring down the passageway, he opened one yellow-webbed wing, holding its longest finger to his lips and looking critically at his sibling, passing a knowing look between the both of them. Pythios was an aggravation at best, and he had no doubts that the little suck-up would be on them in no time about attending the self-defense lesson. After all, Daddy's Little Angel could only play hooky so long before his conscience caught up with him - and insisted that he drag his brothers along with. Honestly, how Ophion could have been born in the same clutch as that little creitin was anyone's guess.

The last thing that Simionce wanted was to meet up with his siblings, but the universe seemed determine to keep them stuck to one another. This theory was affirmed as Ophion fell upon him unbidden, making the solitary Solara foal snarl. "Watch it!" Before he saw the signal for silence, Siminonce's shout rebounded around the cavernous walls of stone, easily signaling their position to their toerag of a little brother. Always whining and worrying - Simionce didn't understand why Pythios bothered following them in the first place. He ended up running home bawling for Father without fail...

"C'mon, let's go." With a murmur, he bravely led the way further into the stony passages, moving away from passages he knew well and taking a few unexpected turns in an effort to regain some level of secrecy. Every so often, the bangles around his ankles would traitorously clink, and even as they walked further and further, Simionce knew it would only be a matter of time before they were found. It was dreadful. "Mother and Father didn't see you come in here, did they?" he asked of his elder brother. Ophion could be devious, but he didn't have the flair for stealth that Simionce did. He enjoyed being stared at too much.
